One-Year Teaching Internships Program

Each year, Phillips Exeter Academy invites six to eight recent college graduates to join its faculty as teaching interns. The purpose of the Teaching Internship Program is to encourage talented young men and women to become secondary school teachers and to help prepare them for such a career.  For these positions at least a bachelor's degree is required in the specific, advertised field or a related field.

Teaching interns spend one school year at Exeter and receive experience in all aspects of boarding school life. Teaching assignments are arranged after discussion between the intern and the department chair, with the interests and experience of the intern in mind.  In the fall term, interns generally work with mentors with whom they share classes, but do not teach any classes on their own.  For the winter and spring terms, interns are assigned their own classes, usually two per term.  In addition, they are required to visit classes in their discipline on a regular basis.  Throughout the year interns learn how to lead Harkness discussions, participate in residential work, in the physical education program and in extracurricular activities congenial to their own skills. Interns are considered full time teachers, are paid a salary and get all medical and health benefits.

The Teaching Intern Program is directed by the associate dean of faculty, who offers direct support, along with the department mentors, to the interns.  Interns meet as a group weekly; the meeting agenda is set by the associate dean of faculty and includes class observation in their own department/discipline as well as others, commentary and discussions about teaching and boarding school life. In addition, the associate dean of faculty helps interns with job searches for the following year.

Teaching interns receive a salary and are housed by the Academy in dormitories or in school apartments.  They may take all their meals in the Academy dining halls. As one-year faculty members, they are eligible for medical and life insurance benefits.

Dormitory: Ordinarily interns reside in a dormitory.  In a dorm, faculty and proctors work together as a team to make the residential experience one in which students can learn from one another. Dormitory duty usually involves one to two weekday nights of regular duty, one or two nights of backup duty (while a student proctor is on duty), and weekend duty every three or four weekends, depending on the number of faculty members working in the dormitory.  If not a resident in a dormitory immediately, an intern is affiliated with a dormitory or small house and generally does dorm duty one night a week, plus one weekend per month.

Coaching: Ordinarily an intern coaches either two out of three sports seasons at the club level or one varsity or junior varsity sport.
