One-Year Teaching Internships Program

Each year, Phillips Exeter Academy invites six to eight recent college graduates to join its faculty as teaching interns. The purpose of the Teaching Internship Program is to encourage talented young men and women to become secondary school teachers and to help prepare them for such a career.  Departments such as English, history, math, modern languages, physical education and science seek interns annually.

Responsibilities

Teaching interns spend one school year at Exeter and receive experience in all aspects of boarding school life. Teaching assignments are arranged after discussion between the intern and the department chair, with the interests and experience of the intern in mind. In the fall term, interns work with mentors with whom they share classes. For the winter and spring terms, interns are assigned their own classes, usually two per term. In addition, they are required to visit classes in their discipline on a regular basis. Interns participate in residential work, in the physical education program and in extracurricular activities congenial to their own skills.

The Teaching Interns Program is directed by the program coordinator, who offers direct support, along with the department mentors, to the interns. Interns meet weekly, usually in an informal setting. The meeting agenda is set by the coordinator and the interns and includes reading and discussion, class observation, commentary and writing exercises.

Compensation

Teaching interns receive a salary and are housed by the Academy in dormitories or in school apartments. They may take all their meals in the Academy dining halls. As one-year faculty members, they are eligible for medical and life insurance benefits.

While working at Exeter, teaching fellows may take advantage of the school’s exceptional facilities, including a library of more than 140,000 volumes; a large physical education complex, fields, and tennis and squash courts; a theater, music center and art studios. If their schedules permit, teaching fellows can also arrange to sit in on courses in other disciplines as a means of learning pedagogical techniques or pursuing interests of their own.

Application Process

Interested candidates are encouraged to apply at their earliest convenience. In the case that we would like to interview you, we would contact you to schedule a date. Decisions are made on a rolling basis, and most appointments are made by the end of April.
