John and Elizabeth Phillips Fellowship
“This really is teacher heaven. Where else can you teach small groups of motivated students with whom you interact during sports, meals and in the dorm? Distractions are minimal and you’re always teaching and learning.”—Catherine Holden, Mathematics Instructor
A Unique Opportunity
The John and Elizabeth Phillips Fellowship Program seeks to enhance the residential environment of one of the country’s leading schools by bringing to campus scholars and teachers who might not otherwise consider teaching in a residential secondary school. This opportunity for faculty traditionally underrepresented in the secondary school environment is one way Exeter is working to create a community that reflects the great diversity of our nation. The fellowships go hand in hand with the school’s goal of providing the finest residential school environment for its students and faculty.
Fellows may come from other educational institutions, direct from college or graduate school, or from non-academic settings. While in residence at Phillips Exeter, fellows affiliate with a specific academic department for a one-, two-, or three-year appointment and coordinate their teaching responsibilities with a faculty mentor, where appropriate.
Joining the Exeter Community
John and Elizabeth Phillips Fellows join an academic community of 190 faculty and 1,000 students. Exeter faculty have traditionally exercised significant responsibility for management of school affairs through service on important faculty committees, as well as oversight of dormitories, athletics, and extracurricular activities. As vital members of the community, Phillips fellows have the opportunity to participate in all these areas, in addition to teaching in a classroom environment unique in secondary education.
An Ideal Classroom
Phillips Exeter Academy is renowned for the quality of its teaching and for the Harkness system of instruction, used for all disciplines at the school since the 1930s. The Harkness classroom, with one teacher and 12 students seated around a large oval table, is a place where learning and growth arise from each individual’s engagement with others, and where independence of thought is sustained through inquiry and reflection. In this setting, the richness of the learning experience depends on diversity in all its dimensions.
