Today is our last Monday of classes. We are all flipping out and cannot believe that we are leaving Mexico in less than two weeks. It is very emotional! Tim, Emily, Kayla, and Ashley went to Caminando Unidos today. The kids were not there because the teachers had a conference to evaluate every child. Instead of playing with the children, they undertook a very challenging project. Our courageous classmates ventured into the far corner where all the trash was. There were many trashcans and each one had a sign (like “plastic bottles,” “PET” (it is a type of plastic), “toilet paper” (yes, toilet paper) “glass” etc.) but everything was mixed. They emptied the trashcans and separated the shards of glass from the dirty plastic bottles, and then readied everything for the arrival of a garbage truck. They felt extremely proud when they finished organizing the trash that had been sitting in the corner for a very long time. After school Safia and her host mom went to Kayla and Vane’s house for lunch. Neither Kayla nor Vane was there since they had playback practice, but it was a fun, relaxing lunch anyways. There was spaghetti and a really delicious chicken dish that Vanessa’s mother prepared. After lunch Safia went home and went to sleep at 6:00.

Hoy fue nuestro último lunes con clases. Todos estamos flipando porque no podemos creer que vayamos a salir de México en menos de dos semanas. ¡Es muy emocional! Tim, Emily, Kayla y Ashley fueron a Caminando Unidos hoy. Los niños no estaban ahí porque los maestros tenían una conferencia para evaluar a cada chico. En vez de jugar con ellos, emprendieron un proyecto que supuso un reto. Nuestros compañeros valientes se atrevieron a acercarse a la esquina donde está una montaña de basura. Había muchos cubos de la basura y cada uno tenía un signo (como “botellas de plásticos,” “PET” (es un tipo de plástico), “Papel de baño” (sí, papel de baño), “Vidrios” etc.) pero todo estaba mezclado. Ellos vaciaron los cubos de basura y separaron los fragmentos de vidrio de las botellas de plástico sucias y entonces prepararon todo para la llegada de un camión de la basura. Se sentían sumamente orgullosos cuando terminaron de organizar toda la basura que había ido quedando en la esquina por mucho tiempo. Después de escuela, Safia y su madre fueron a la casa de Kayla y Vane para la comida. Ni Kayla ni Vane estuvieron allí, pero fue una visita tranquila y divertida todavía. Comieron espagueti y un tipo de pollo muy rico que había preparado la mamá de Vane. Después de la comida Safia regresó a su casa y durmió a las 6:00. Fue otro día buenísima aquí en México. ¡Besos! Today was the last day of Literature class for all of the Exonians. In this class, which Señora Gosálvez teaches, we read articles, short stories, novellas, and excerpts from books. We have had the opportunity to read the best authors in the Spanish language, like Miguel de Cervantes, Gabriel García Márquez, Jorge Luis Borges, Carlos Fuentes and Pablo Neruda. A majority of the books we have read have been about themes that are relevant to our lives here. Two examples are “The Crystal Frontier” by Carlos Fuentes, which is about the relations between Americans and Mexicans and the “The Good Example” by Vicente Riva Palacio which is about a school where everyone needs to memorize and nobody learns much. Although we have read many new books, the whole class agreed that “the first is the best” and that our favorite book was the excerpt of Don Quijote that we read.
That afternoon, Becca and Tim came to Kevin’s house to eat, work and hang out. It was the first time that they ate Agus’ (Kevin’s cook and cleaning lady) food. Unfortunately, Agus cooked Kevin’s least favorite meal, and the two guests were unable to experience the usual richness of Agus’ cooking. After lunch, Becca and Kevin worked on their ESMEX project about the American economist Joseph Stiglitz. Tim worked on his new project- a CD of the new music we have discovered in Cuernavaca. Becca and Tim left at 8 o’clock and after Kevin said goodbye to his Mexican mother, Constanza, who was leaving with her class to go to Florida the next day. Kevin

Hoy fue la última clase de Literatura para todos los de Exeter. En la clase, que la Señora Gosálvez enseña, leímos artículos, cuentos cortos, novelas y extractos de libros. Hemos tenido la oportunidad de  leer  los mejores autores en el idioma español, como Miguel Cervantes, Gabriel García Márquez, Jorge Luís Borges, Carlos Fuentes y Pablo Neruda. La mayoría de los libros que hemos leído son sobre temas que son importantes en nuestras vidas aquí. Dos ejemplos son “La frontera de cristal” por Carlos Fuentes que taran sobre las relaciones entre los estadounidense y los mexicanos, y el cuento corto “El buen ejemplo” por Vicente Riva Palacio es sobre una escuela donde todos necesitan memorizar y nadie aprende mucho. Aunque leímos libros muy nuevos, toda la clase estaba de acuerdo en que “el primer fue el mejor” y que nuestro libro favorito fueron los extractos de “Don Quijote” que leímos.
Por la tarde, Becca y Tim fueron a la casa de Kevin para comer, trabajar y relajarse. Fue la primera vez que ellos comieron la comida de Agus, la muchachade Kevin. Desafortunadamente, Agus cocinó la comida menos favorita de Kevin y los dos invitados no pudieron experimentar la usual riqueza de la cocina de Agus. Después de la comida, Becca y Kevin trabajaron en un proyecto para la clase de ESMEX sobre el economista estadounidense Joseph Stiglitz. Tim trabajó en su nuevo proyecto- un disco de la música nueva que hemos descubierto en Cuernavaca. Becca y Tim salieron a las ocho y después Kevin se despidió de su madre mexicana, Constanza, que iba con su clase a Florida el día siguiente. Kevin

Today was another busy day.  All the Exeter students were feeling lazy since it was their second to last day of class.  In the past two months, we’ve all gotten pretty close to our classmates, and it’s odd that we only get to know them for such a short time.  What a bittersweet realization!  For Kayla and Mohi, it was the day before Playback.  They had an intense practice after school, perfecting the dance and adding finishing touches.  They had butterflies, but were definitely more excited than nervous for the big day coming up.  After all, they get to miss class tomorrow in preparation for the event!  After an exhausting practice, they went to Kayla’s house where they devoured some of the fresh, in-season mangos (their shared favorite fruit)!  They made a quick stop at the Superama grocery store, and made a mental list of Mexican goodies they want to bring back to the United States (cajeta, Kinder Bueno chocolate, horchata powder, and vanilla Emperadores cookies).  You may or may not be lucky enough to get a taste of these tasty Mexican treats!

At night, Andreina went to see her first ever game of fútbol rápido. Because there is no such thing as being out of bounds the game only stops when a goal is scored. A few of her friends for La Salle were playing on the team which included people of all ages. There was one man that really worried Andreina, he looked old enough to be her grandfather but he ran and played as if he were 18. One family of a La Salle kid came with noise makers and cheered incredibly loud. After they went for some classic tacos al pastor. What are we going to do without them when we go back? Hoy tuvimos otro día ocupado.  Todos los estudiantes de Exeter tenían flojera porque era el penúltimo día de clase.  En los dos meses pasados, nosotros nos hemos hecho amigos con nuestros compañeros del salón, y es raro que solamente podemos conocerles por tan corto tiempo.  ¡Qué agridulce!  Para Kayla y Mohi era el día antes de Playback.  Tuvieron una práctica intensa después de la escuela, perfeccionando el ensayo y agregando toques finales.  Estaban nerviosas pero con certeza estaban más emocionadas que nerviosas para el día grande.  A fin de cuentas, ¡pueden a faltar clases mañana en preparación para el evento!  ¡Después de una práctica agotadora, fueron a la casa de Kayla donde devoraron algunos de los frescos, mangos de temporada (su fruta preferida común)!  Ellas hicieron una parada rápida al Superama e hicieron una lista mental de comestibles mexicanos que querían traer a los Estados Unidos (cajeta, Kinder Bueno chocolate, polvo de horchata y emperadores de vainilla).  ¡Puedes o no puedes tener suficiente suerte para conseguir probar estos sabrosos dulces mexicanos!

En la noche,  Andreina fue a ver su primer partido de fútbol rápido. Porque no hay algo como fuera de juego, el partido solamente para cuando alguien se mete un gol. Algunos de sus amigos de La Salle estuvieron jugando en el equipo que incluyó personas de todas las edades.  Había una persona que ponía a Andreina un poco nerviosa. Parecía como si pudiera ser su abuelito pero corrió y jugó como si tuviera 18 años. Una de las familias de un chavo de La Salle vinieron preparadas con cosas para hacer ruido y gritaban mucho! Después fueron a comer tacos al pastor. Qué vamos a hacer sin los tacos cuando nos vayamos. Mohi y Andreina

Today was a great day!  Instead of going to classes, Tim and I went with our class to a nursing home to pass time with the elderly and cook lunch for them.  Tim and I helped in the kitchen where our group cooked and prepared carrot soup, chicken and meat, mashed potatoes, salad, pineapple juice and for desert, peaches.  Our class made bracelets with the elderly, played with clay and also, preformed different types of dance.  Today was our last day in La Salle with our class and it was very special for us to have this experience with them.  After the nursing home, Tim returned to my house with Becca to have lunch with my family.  We decided to siesta because we needed to rest before PLAYBACK!  Playback is a dance competition that the La Salle seniors plan in order to earn money for their Prom. Playback started at five in the afternoon in Alebrije, a popular club in Cuernavaca. The event is very extravagant!  For example, Kayla and Mohi left school at nine in the morning with their group ‘Candy Girls’ to go to the hair salon and do their final preparations.  These girls danced very well and came in second place!  Everyone had a very fun time cheering and shouting for their favorite team and dancing to the Mexican music.  Emily

After two incredible months, it was very sad that today was our last day of classes at La Salle. Luckily, it wasn`t the last time that we will be able to hang out with our friends because next week we will be there for a formal photo. This afternoon, I returned to my house for a small nap before the events to take place later that night. Tonight, there was a dance competition hosted by our school called `Playback´. The music and the dancing were really good, but the competition itself only lasted about an hour and a half. After, it was very similar to a school dance except at a real club. For the Exeter kids, the action lasted until ten, but many people stayed longer than that. During the night, Kat, Leah, Hannah, and Andreina were able to chill and dance with almost their entire salon! Overall, it was a thrilling night! Katrina

¡Hoy fue un gran día!  En lugar de ir a las clases, Tim y yo fuimos con nuestro salón a un asilo para pasar tiempo con los ancianos y cocinar una comida para ellos.  Tim y yo ayudamos en la cocina donde nuestro grupo cocinó y preparó una sopa de zanahorias, pollo y carne, un puré de papas, una ensalada, jugo de piña y para el postre, duraznos.  Nuestra clase hizo pulseras con los ancianos, jugó con masa y también, presentó tipos diferentes de baile.  Hoy fue nuestro último día en La Salle con nuestro salón y fue muy especial para nosotros tener esta experiencia con ellos.  Después del asilo, Tim regresó a mi casa con Becca para comer con mi familia.  ¡Decidimos tomar una siesta porque necesitábamos descansar antes de a PLAYBACK!  Playback es una competición de baile que los estudiantes en su tercer año de La Salle planean para ganar dinero para su Prom.  Playback empezó a las cinco de la tarde en Alebrije, una discoteca popular en Cuernavaca.  ¡El acontecimiento es muy extravagante! Por ejemplo, Kayla y Mohi salieron de la escuela a las nueve de la mañana con su grupo ‘Candy Girls’ para ir al salón de peluquería y hacer sus preparaciones finales.  ¡Estas chicas bailaban muy bien y lograron un segundo lugar!  Todos lo pasaron muy bien vitoreando y gritando por su equipo favorito y bailando a la música mexicana.  Emily

Después de dos meses increíbles, estaba muy triste que hoy sea nuestro último día de clases en La Salle. Por suerte, no era la última vez que podremos pasar tiempo con nuestros amigos porque la próxima semana estaremos allí para una foto formal.  Este tarde, yo regresé a mi casa para descansar un poco antes del evento de la noche. Esta noche había una competición de baile de nuestra escuela se llama `Playback´. La música y los bailes estuvieron muy bien pero la competición propia era solamente para una hora y media. Después, era  muy similar a un baile de la escuela, solamente en un club real. Para los chicos de Exeter, la acción duró hasta  las diez, pero mucha gente se quedó aún más tiempo. Durante la noche, ¡Kat, Leah, Hannah y Andreina pudieron para pasar tiempo bailando con casi su salón completo! ¡En conjunto, fue una noche emocionante!  Katrina

Today we went to Acapulco. Acapulco is on the Pacific coast and is a beautiful place with many of the most beautiful beaches and hotels in Mexico. We left Cuernavaca at six in the morning on a bus and arrived in Acapulco at ten a.m. and ate breakfast at a VIPs. The restaurant was on the beach and there were pancakes, waffles, bacon, eggs and many other things. After eating we went to southern Acapulco to the Fairmont Princess hotel. There we spent the afternoon on the beach. We had a lot of fun- Conrad went surfing, Hannah, Tim, Giancarlo, Safia, Jorge and Ashley rode jetskis, Alice, Kat, Hannah, Mohi, Kayla and Emily got massages and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Later, we left the beach and went to cliffs to watch the sunset. At seven thirty a bunch of men and one girl began to jump off the cliffs into the water below.  They started in the water and had to climb up the cliffs before jumping into the water.  Everyone was nervous because there were lots of rocks in the water and each diver had to wait until there was a lot of water from the waves.  After watching the diver we went to eat in a restaurant that was 100% natural.  The juices and smoothies there were delicious and Mohi and Alice were happy because there were many options for vegetarians.  We arrived in Cuernavaca at two thirty in the morning; everyone was tired but we had a lot of fun on the beaches of Acapulco. Hoy fuimos a Acapulco. Acapulco está en la costa pacífica y es un lugar muy bonito con unas de las playas y los hoteles más bonitos de México. Salimos de Cuernavaca a las seis de la mañana en un camión y llegamos a Acapulco a las diez de la mañana y comimos en un VIP’s el desayuno. El restaurante estaba en la playa y había hot cakes, wafles, tocino, huevos y muchas otras cosas. Después de comer fuimos al sur de Acapulco al hotel La Princess Fairmont. Allá quedamos en la playa por toda la tarde. Nos divertimos mucho- Conrad surfeó, Hannah, Tim, Giancarlo, Safia, Jorge y Ashley fueron en motos de agua, Alice, Hannah, Kat, Mohi, Kayla y Emily recibieron masajes y todos nosotros disfrutamos mucho. Luego, salimos de la playa y fuimos a unos precipicios donde miramos el atardecer. A las siete y media algunos hombres y una chica empezaron a saltar de los precipicios.  Los hombres empezaron en el agua y tenían que subir los precipicios antes de saltar al agua.  Todos estábamos nerviosos porque había muchas piedras en el agua y cada uno tenía que esperar hasta que había mucha agua de las olas.  Después de mirar a los buzos fuimos a comer en un restaurante que era 100% natural.  Los jugos y licuados allá eran muy ricos y Mohi y Alice estaban felices porque había muchas opciones para personas vegetarianas.  Llegamos en Cuernavaca a las dos y media de la mañana; todos estaban muy cansados pero nos divertimos mucho en las playas de Acapulco. Today we began our day very late because we returned from our trip to Acapulco at two thirty in the morning.  For this, we got up at twelve in the afternoon.  We have a final presentation in our final week in front of the directors of the program, our teachers, and our families and our group (Becca, Ashley, Alice, and Tim) dedicated the afternoon to work and to plan what we are going to say and to show about our experience here in Mexico.  The four of us met at Alice's house and brought our laptops and cameras full of photos.  Each group needs to speak about two of our excursions and one of the conferences in our Mexican culture class.  Also each member of our group is going to talk about our own experiences living with a different family, a Mexican family and about something cultural that we have done or seen.  Alice is going to describe a yoga class that we went to and Tim about the dance and culture of salsa.  After a few hours we ate with Alice's parents and her older sister that is married and has a baby called Diego.  Javier, her father had grilled cecina and Margot (her mother) made a salada, pasta, and a Mexican dish called cazuela azteca made with corn, cactus, tortillas and other indigenous ingredients of the region.  We finished with chocolate ice cream that was the best that we had tried here, and we could eat as much as we wanted! The meal was similar to the first meal of the new school year in Harry Potter when all the students arrive at Hogwarts.  It was very beautiful to eat a delicious meal outside next to the pool in the afternoon when it was not too hot with Alice's family who are very friendly and accommodating.  It was a relaxed and enjoyable day.  In the night no one did much because everyone was still tired from the excursion to Acapulco. Hoy empezamos nuestros días muy tarde porque regresamos de nuestro viaje a Acapulco a las dos y media de la mañana.  Por esto, nos levantamos a las doce de la tarde.  Tenemos una presentación final esta semana enfrente de los directores del programa, nuestros profesores y nuestras familias y nuestro grupo (Becca, Ashley, Alice y Tim) dedicamos la tarde a trabajar y planear qué vamos a decir y mostrar sobre nuestras experiencias aquí en México.  Nosotros cuatro reunimos en la casa de Alice y trajimos nuestros computadores y cámaras llenas de fotos.  Cada grupo necesita hablar sobre dos de nuestras excursiones y una de las conferencias en nuestra clase de cultura mexicana.  También cada miembro de nuestro grupo va a platicar sobre nuestras propias experiencias viviendo con una familiar diferente, una familia mexicana y sobre algo cultural que hemos hecho o visto.  Alice va a describir una clase de yoga a la que fuimos y Tim va a hablar sobre el baile y la cultura de salsa.  Después de unas horas comimos con los padres de Alice y su hermana mayor que está casada y tiene un bebé se llama Diego.  Javier, su padre ha asado a la parrilla cecina y Margot (su madre) hizo una ensalada, pasta y un platillo mexicano se llama cazuela azteca hecha de maíz, nopal, tortillas y otras ingredientes indígenas de esta región.  Terminamos con helado chocolate que fue el mejor que hemos probado aquí, y podíamos comer tanto como queríamos.  La comida era similar a la primera comida en Harry Potter cuando todos los estudiantes de Hogwarts llegaron por la primer día del nuevo año en la escuela.  Fue muy bonito comer comida riquísima afuera al lado de la alberca por la tarde cuando no hacía mucho calor con la familia de Alice que es muy amable y abierta.  Era un día tranquilo y agradable.  En la noche nadie hizo mucho porque todos todavía estaban cansados del excursión a Acapulco. Today was Leah’s birthday! She turned 18 years old and to celebrate, had a party in her house. We all went to spend time with the birthday girl. There was a magnificent lunch prepared by her parents. We ate chicken tortillas, pasta salad, potatoes with chorizo, beans and more that we can’t remember. We are going to miss the Mexican food, that is for sure. After eating, we played in the moonbounce and with the soccer ball we bought in Acapulco. When it was time for cake, we gathered around the table. We tried to sing the birthday song but we don’t know many words. It’s much longer and more complicated than the one in English! The cake was cooked by Leah and it reminded us of home. What a treat! It had many tiers and chocolate frosting, which ended up on Leah’s face. This is a tradition we have learned in Mexico – if you have your birthday here, beware!  After celebrating, we went to our respective houses in order to prepare for our last week in Cuernavaca.  We do not want to go back to the US! ¡Hoy fue el cumpleaños de Leah! Ella tiene dieciocho años y para celebrarlo, había una fiesta en su casa. Todos nosotros fuimos para pasar tiempo con la chica de cumpleaños. Había una comida magnífica preparada por los padres de Leah. Comimos pollo en tortillas, una ensalada de pasta, papas con chorizo, frijoles y más que no podemos recordar. Vamos a extrañar la comida de México, eso es seguro. Después de comer, nosotros jugamos en el “brinca-brinca” y con la pelota de fútbol que compramos en Acapulco. Cuando fue la hora del pastel, nos reunimos alrededor la mesa. Tratamos de cantar la canción de cumpleaños mexicana pero no sabemos muchas de las palabras. ¡Es mucho más larga y complicada que la canción inglesa! El pastel de cumpleaños fue cocinado por Leah y nos recordó a los Estados Unidos. ¡Qué gusto! Tenía muchos niveles cubiertos de escarcha de chocolate, que acabó en la cara de Leah. Es una tradición que nosotros hemos aprendidos en México – ¡si tienes tu cumpleaños aquí, ten cuidado!  Después de celebrar, fuimos a nuestras propias casas para preparar para nuestra última semana aquí en Cuernavaca, lo que es muy triste.  ¡No queremos regresar a los Estados Unidos! February 18, 2008

On Monday, Leah and Andreina had an exam in their Ethics class.  It was very difficult!  Katrina and Hannah took it, as well.  However, after the exam, it was a normal day in La Salle.  Señora Gosalvez canceled both PEA Literature classes due to the Ethics exam.  We were going to go to a café for our Asesoría class, but it didn’t work out because Leah, Katrina, Hannah and Andreina had Formación class right after.  During the day, Leah and Hannah went to the gym and then to buy “nieve”, which is a little bit like gelato (from Italy).  After school, Leah returned home and ate a FABULOUS lunch – picadillo on top of tostadas.  She had to study a lot for calculus exam on Tuesday, so she couldn’t go to salsa class. 
Today Andreina met an exchange student. Janet, a retired woman from Texas will with the Pederzini family for a month. Janet studies six hours in school every day. Her classes are private and one on one. Even though she does not know much grammar nor vocabulary I think she will learn quickly. Janet wants to learn the culture and the language. Her first night in Cuernavaca she went to Los Arcos to learn salsa and enjoy the best of Cuernavaca. She had even used the ruta, something some of us might not dare to do. We hope Janet enjoys her time here as much as we have.  Leah and Andreina

El lunes, Leah y Andreina tuvieron un examen en la clase de Ética Laboral.  ¡Fue muy difícil!  Katrina y Hannah lo tuvieron también.  Sin embargo, después del examen, era un día normal en La Salle.  La Señora Gosalvez canceló la clase de Literatura PEA porque los cuatro tenían el examen.  Íbamos a ir un café para nuestra clase de Asesoría, pero como  Leah, Katrina, Hannah y Andreina tenían la clase de Formación después de Asesoría, no pudimos ir.  Durante el día, Leah y Hannah fueron al gimnasio y entonces a una tienda que vende nieve, que es un poquito como gelato (de Italia).  Después de la escuela, Leah regresó a su casa y comió una comida buenísima: picadillo con tostadas.  Ella tenía que estudiar mucho para su examen de la clase de cálculo del martes, así que no fue a la clase de salsa.
Hoy Andreina se conoció a una estudiante de intercambio. Janet, una mujer jubilada de Texas va a vivir con la familia Pederzini durante un mes. Janet estudia seis horas en una escuela cada día. Su sclases son privadas, sólo el maestro y ella. Aunque ella no sabía mucha gramática ni vocabulario creo que va a aprender muy rápido. Janet tiene ganas de aprender la cultura y el idioma. La primera noche en Cuernavaca ella fue a Los Arcos para aprender salsa y disfrutar de lo mejor de Cuernavaca. También ella usó la ruta, algo que no algunos nos atrevemos a hacer. Ojalá que Janet disfrute de su tiempo aquí como nosotros. Leah y Andreina

Today I took my hardest exam in school which was for my Higiene y Salud class (anatomy more or less).  Emily (my partner in class) and I prepared a lot and studied as much as possible before the test but the quantity and specificity of the information was a little overwhelming and our brains were full of anatomical terms in Spanish upon finishing.  How confusing!  After school and lunch I wanted to go for a run outside for a break from my exercise on the treadmill.  My brother, Jorge, brought me to a recently constructed park here in Cuernavaca that has a running/walking path that runs alongside a cliff and has a magnificent view of the city below.  I only ran for 25 minutes because the path goes uphill and because here we are at nearly 5000 feet above sea level where the air is thinner.  I hope that my exercises at this altitude are good preparation for my crew season this spring. Unfortunately, Becca has had to take a break from her exercising because she has a case of the gripe. It’s very strange for her to be sick here in Mexico because the temperatures are so warm, and she is accustomed to the cold winters of New England. But today, when she woke up, she had no voice! She sounds very funny. Her family attributed her throat sickness to the extremes in the temperature. It’s sunny and hot during the day and at night, it’s much cooler. She has strict instructions from her Mexican parents, who are very protective of her. She is not allowed to be in the sun, drink cold beverages with ice, and worst of all, exercise. Hopefully the gripe passes soon!  Greg had a pretty calm day since he didn’t have to take any exams.  His history teacher, Luis, handed back the test that he took earlier in the week and he ended up getting one of the best grades in the class.  Be that as it may, he is really excited that the exam period is almost over.  It has been very hard to study for so many exams because it’s necessary to remember a lot of information in another language.  It’s incredible that our Mexican classmates at La Salle take twice as many exams as we do!  Never the less it’s a good opportunity to learn more Spanish and expand our vocabularies.  After school, Greg spent a lot of time taking pictures of his house so his family in the US can see it.  It’s so sad that we only have two weeks left in Mexico! Hoy tomé mi examen más difícil en la escuela cual fue de la clase de higiene y salud (anatomía más o menos).  Emilia (mi pareja de clase) y yo nos preparamos mucho y estudiamos lo más posible antes del examen pero la cantidad y especificidad de la información era un pocito agobiante y al terminar nuestros cerebros estaban lleno de términos anatómicos españoles, ¡qué confusión!  Después de la escuela y la comida quería correr afuera para interrumpir mi ejercicio en la cinta de andar. Mi hermano, Jorge, me llevó a un parque aquí en Cuernavaca, reciente construido, con un camino de correr y andar que corre al costado de un precipicio y tiene una vista magnífica de la ciudad abajo.  Corrí por sólo 25 minutos porque el sendero va ascendente y porque aquí estamos a casi 5000 pies de altura sobre el nivel del mar donde el aire es más delgado.  Espero que mi ejercicio en esta altitud me prepare bien por mi temporada de remar en la primavera. Desafortunadamente, Becca ha necesitado tomar un receso en su ejercicio porque tiene un caso de la gripe. Es muy extraño para ella ser enferma aquí en México porque las temperaturas son más calientes y está acostumbrada a los inviernos fríos de Nueva Inglaterra. ¡Pero hoy, cuando se despertó, no tenía voz! Ella suena muy chistosa. Pero su familia atribuyó su enfermedad de garganta a los extremos del tiempo. Hace sol y calor durante los días y por la noche, es más fresco. Ella tiene instrucciones estrictas de sus padres mexicanos, quienes son muy protectores con ella. No puede estar en el sol, ni tomar bebidas frías con hielo, y lo peor, no puede hacer ejercicio. ¡Ojalá que la gripe pase muy rápido!  Greg tuvo un día muy tranquilo porque no tuvo que presentar ningún examen.  Su profesor de historia, Luis, le entregó el examen que presentó y recibió una de las mejores calificaciones en toda la clase. Él está muy emocionado que la época de los exámenes casi se ha acabado. Ha sido tan difícil estudiar para tantos exámenes porque hay que recordar mucha información en otra lengua.  ¡Es increíble que nuestros compañeros de clase mexicanos en La Salle tomen doble la cantidad de exámenes que nosotros!  Sin embargo, es una oportunidad muy buena para aprender más español y para ensanchar nuestros vocabularios.  Después de la escuela, Greg pasó mucho tiempo tomando fotos de su casa para que su familia en los Estados Unidos pueda verla.  ¡Qué triste que nos faltan sola dos semanas en México. Today was another day in Spanish test week. Both Alice and Mohi had two tests, which they crammed for with note cards they prepared the night before. Way to be on top of things, girls! The Mexicans in their classes were fascinated by this American method of studying. In the afternoon, Kayla and Mohi went to Playback practice, as usual. They met up with Kevin, Emily, and Tim at the big Power Gym to work on their fitness. Alice and Becca couldn’t make it because they were resting at home after mysteriously falling sick in this sunny weather. Puzzling, no? Afterwards they walked across the street from the gym to the Galerias mall, where Becca made a couple purchases! Then they went out to sushi to celebrate the recent 17th birthday of Nico, Kevin’s host-brother. Mohi was adventurous and ordered two rolls for herself! After dinner, Tim, Becca, Kayla, and Mohi browsed some Mexican department stores for potential prom dresses. Becca tried on a pleated orange sensation dress, while the dress that Kayla tried somewhat resembled a curtain. What an interesting contrast! After that episode, they went to get some a crowd favorite dessert – crepes! Mohi and Alice

Hoy fue otro día en la semana de exámenes españoles. Alice y Mohi ambas tuvieron dos exámenes, para los cuales ella estudiaron con tarjetitas que prepararon la noche anterior. ¡Buen trabajo para estar listas, chicas! Los mexicanos de sus clases estaban fascinados con este método americano de estudiar. En la tarde, Kayla y Mohi fueron a la práctica de Playback, como usualmente. Ellas se encontraron con Kevin, Emily, y Tim en el Power Gym grande para hacer en su ejercicio. Alice y Becca no pudieron venir porque estaban descansando después de misteriosamente ponerse enfermas en este tiempo solado. ¿Desconcertante, no? Luego cruzaron la calle del gimnasio a las Galerias, donde Becca hizo unas compras. Entonces fueron a comer sushi para celebrar el reciente 17 cumpleaños de Nico, el hermano de Kevin. ¡Mohi estaba aventurera y pidió dos platos para ella misma! Después de la cena, Tim, Becca, Kayla y Mohi echaron una ojeada a una tiende departamento mexicana para vestidos potenciales para el baile prom. Becca se probó un vestido naranja sensacional, mientras el vestido que Kayla se probó parecía una cortina. ¡Qué contraste interesante! Después de ese episodio, fueron a tomar el postre favorito del grupo: ¡crepas! Mohi y Alice

Today the final exams of the term ended.  We still have a lot of homework to do and need to prepare for our presentations about our experience here in Cuernavaca.  It was a long day and I was happy when it was over.  After school I returned to my house to eat with my family and the new girl in my house: Carolina.  Carolina is from Philadelphia, is sixteen, and is going to live with me until next Tuesday.  She doesn´t know much Spanish, but she´s learning fast!  I went to the gym after lunch and then to Bohemian Night, an event to celebrate the month of love and friendship.  Here in Mexico the celebration lasts longer than just Valentine´s Day; they celebrate the entire month of February.  Lots of students and teachers sang and played instruments and we enjoyed listening to them. Today was a normal day for me. After classes, I returned home for lunch and to study by the pool. The weather here is perfect, but my family barely uses the pool because they say it’s too cold! The water is a little chilly, but I was shocked when I learned how little they use it, even during the summer. In the afternoon, salsa was canceled so I went out to the movies and for tacos with my host sister. Tacos ¨con pastor¨ are a common type of taco here that are the best!  Later that night, we went to Bohemia Night at the school where there was food and singing. It was a lot of fun to hang out with my friends and the food was really good. The school was all decorated with balloons and candles too. How cute! Overall, it was a fun night and a good day. Hoy terminaron los exámenes del periodo.  Todavía tenemos mucha tarea y necesitamos preparar para nuestras presentaciones sobre nuestra experiencia aquí en Cuernavaca.  Fue un día largo en la escuela y estaba feliz cuando terminó.  Después de la escuela regresé a mi casa para comer con mi familia y la chica nueva en mi casa: Carolina.  Carolina es de Philadephia y tiene dieciséis años y va a vivir conmigo hasta el martes próximo.  ¡Ella no sabe mucho español pero está aprendiendo muy rápido!  Fui al gimnasio después de la comida y entonces fui a Noche Bohemia, un evento para celebrar el mes de amor y amistad.  Aquí en México la celebración dura más que El Día de San Valentín; ellos celebraron por todo el mes de febrero.  Muchos estudiantes  y maestros cantaron y tocaron instrumentos y nos divertimos escuchándoles. Hoy fue un día normal para mí. Después de las clases, regresé a mi casa para la comida y para tomar un poco sol a lado de mi piscina mientras estudiaba. El tiempo aquí es perfecto, ¡pero mi familia nunca usa la piscina porque ellos dicen que está demasiado fría! El agua estaba un poquito fresca, pero estuve en choque cuando aprendí que ellos apenas la usan, incluido durante el verano.  En la tarde, la clase de salsa estaba cancelada y fui al cine y para comer tacos con mi hermana mexicana.  ¡Tacos al pastor son lo mejor! Entonces, esta noche, fuimos a la Noche Bohemia donde hay comida y cantan. Era muy divertido a pasar tiempo libre con mis amigos y la comida era rica. La escuela estaba decorada con globos y velas también. ¡Qué lindo! En general, era una noche muy divertida y un día muy bueno. Katrina

Today, we went to Tepoztlan, a village full of markets (tianguis) and restaurants.  Also, there is a mountain that has a pyramid on the top.  Our activity for the day… climbing the mountain!  For some of us, the climb was rocky (hahah)!  Mohi, Kayla, Emily and Becca had problems and to inspire them, they sang a remix of Hanson’s Mmm Bop.  How cool!  For Andreina, it was not as cool.  Because of a salsa-dance freak accident, she was not able to climb the mountain.  She passed her time with Adrian, our chivalrous hero!  We think that everyone is in agreement that the hike was worth it.  The view was beautiful, we enjoyed a very delicious lunch in a restaurant close to the mountain and we ate ice cream in an ice cream shop with numerous unique flavors.  We all returned very tired.  Emily, Kayla, Tim, Becca, Jorge, Alice, Mohi and Kevin went to their favorite pizzeria, Armando’s.  After, they went to buy desserts in Superama and used the Internet in Emily’s house.  But, some had more energy, and Andreina and Ashley passed their Friday dancing.  What luck we have for a free day (Saturday) in order to rest and rejuvenate ourselves for Sunday’s excursion!  (Emily and Andreina)

Hoy, fuimos a Tepoztlan, un pueblo lleno de mercados (tianguis) y restaurantes.  También, hay una montaña que tiene una pirámide arriba. ¡Nuestra actividad del día fue subir la montaña!  ¡Para algunos de nosotros, la escalada fue rocosa (jajaja)!  Mohi, Kayla, Emily y Becca tuvieron problemas y para inspirarse, cantaron un remix de Hanson’s Mmm Bop.  ¡Qué padre!  Para Andreina, no fue tan padre.  Por la culpa de un accidente extraño de salsa, no pudo subir la montaña.  ¡Ella pasó su tiempo con Adrian, nuestro héroe caballeroso! Pensamos que todos estamos de acuerdo que la subida valió la pena.  La vista era hermosa, aprovechamos una comida super rica en un restaurante cerca de la montaña y también, comimos helado en una heladería con numerosos sabores únicos.  Regresamos bien cansados.  Emily, Kayla, Tim, Becca, Jorge, Alice, Mohi y Kevin fueron a su pizzería favorita, Armando’s.  Después, fueron a comprar postres en Superama y usaron el Internet en la casa de Emily.  Pero, algunos tenían más energía y Andreina y Ashley pasaron su viernes bailando.  ¡Qué suerte teníamos de tener un día libre (sábado) para descansar y rejuvenecernos para la excursión de domingo!  (Emily y Andreina)

We didn’t have an excursion today and because our time here is disappearing rapidly, we used this day to go shopping and tanning and other things that we have left until now. Andreina and Ashley went to the Centro after a morning full of sun and time in the pool. They found Kevin and his Mexican family in a restaurant called Marco Polo and they shared dessert with him… nutella crepes and tiramisu. So delicious! They ventured through the Centro and found Tim, Emily, and Becca. Tim pointed Andreina and Ashley in the direction of Plaza Lido, a maze of shops with clothes, movies, purses, and numerous other things that are super cheap. For example, you can buy four movies for only fifty pesos, about five dollars if you are willing to support the black market. Conrad and Greg went to the centro also with Conrad’s american parents. There, they walked through Borda’s Garden and they saw the Cathedral of Cuernavaca. Later they ate at Marco Polo before going to the artesan’s market. In the market they could find clothing, bags, belts, blankets, glasses, silver and many other things. After a successful, relaxing, and fun-filled day, we are ready to climb the pyramids at Teotihuacan the next day! Goodbye friends, Conrad and Ashley

No teníamos una excursión hoy y puesto que nuestro tiempo aquí está desapareciendo rápidamente, usumos este día para ir de compras y tomar el sol y otras cosas que hemos dejado para lo último. Andreina y Ashley fueron al Centro después de una mañana llena de sol y tiempo en la alberca.  Encontraron a Kevin y su familia mexicana en un restaurante que se llama Marco Polo y compartieron postre con él… crepas con nutella y tiramisu. ¡Riquísimo! Se aventuraron por el Centro y encontraron Tim, Emily y Becca. Tim les señaló a Andreina y Ashley con el dedo en la dirección del Plaza Lido, un laberinto de tiendas con ropa, películas, bolsas y otras cosas numerosas que son baratísimas. Por ejemplo, puedes comprar cuatro películas por sólo cincuenta pesos si quieres apoyar el mercado negro. Conrad y Greg fueron al centro también con los padres amereicanos de Conrad. Allá  ellos caminaron a través el Jardín Borda y vieron la Catedral de Cuernavaca. Luego ellos comieron en Marco Polo antes de ir al mercado de los artesanos. En el mercado de los artesanos pudieron encontrar a ropa, bolsas, cinturones, mantas, vasos, plata y muchas otras cosas. ¡Después de un día exitoso, relajado y lleno de diversión, estamos listos para subir las pirámides en Teotihuacán mañana! Today we visited Teotihuacán, the largest pre-Columbian city in the Americas. It was an incredible experience. The bus ride from Cuernavaca to Teotihuacán took about two hours, but we all watched Monster, Inc. in Spanish so the ride did not feel too long. The first thing we saw when we got out of the bus was this entryway filled with vendors. They were selling necklaces, t-shirts, and a million other miscellaneous things. After passing the vendors we entered this huge open area. There were pyramids everywhere, big and small. All of the pyramids were lined up along the Avenue of the Dead (Miccoatli). The Pyramid of the Sun is located a little after the middle of the avenue and the Pyramid of the Moon is at the very end. Everyone climbed the Sun pyramid (the biggest pyramid in all of Teotihuacan and the third one in the world) and afterwards they all knew that they would not need to go the gym- the climb was very good exercise! At the top, everyone was surprised to see the huge, beautiful view. There were a ton of people praying and worshiping- Teotihuacán is famous for its “spiritual energy” and there are many rumors that the city was built by UFOs. Although the Exonians weren’t worshiping “the energy,” the were having a lot of fun- everyone took pictures and talked with Tim’s Mexican parents, and Conrad’s American parents, who are staying in Cuernavaca for the week. Finally, everyone came down and left Teotihuacán with slight sunburns. After a day full of history, sun and climbing, everyone relaxed and had dinner together in a very Mexican style restaurant close to the pyramids. Kevin and Safia

Hoy nosotros visitamos a Teotihuacan, que es la ciudad pre-colombina más grande de las Américas. La experiencia fue increíble. El viaje en el autobús duró alrededor de dos horas, pero vimos la película Monsters, Inc en español entonces el viaje pareció menos largo. La primera cosa que vimos después de salir del autobús fue una entrada llena de vendedores. Ellos estaban vendiendo collares, playeras y mil otras cosas variadas. Después de pasar por los vendedores entramos a un área muy grande y espaciosa. Había pirámides, grandes y pequeñas, por todos lados. Todas las pirámides formaban una fila en la calle de los muertos (Miccoatli). La pirámide del sol estaba en la mitad de la calle y la pirámide de la luna está al fin de la calle.

Todos subieron el Pirámide del Sol (el mas grande en Teotihuacan y la tercera en el mundo) y después sabían que no necesitaban ir al gimnasio: ¡el acenso fue muy buen ejercicio! En el ápice, estuvimos muy sorprendidos para ver la vista bella y grande. Había muchas personas rezando y adorando porque Teotihuacan es famoso por su energía espiritual y hay muchos rumores de que objetos volantes no identificados construyeron la ciudad. Aunque los del grupo no estábamos adorando “la energía,” nos divertimos mucho,  todos tomamos muchas fotos y hablamos con los padres mexicanos de Tim y los padres estadounidenses de Conrad, que están en Cuernavaca esta semana. Finalmente, bajamos de la pirámide y salimos de Teotihuacan un poco quemados por el sol. Después de un día lleno de historia, sol y escaladas, nos relajaron y comimos en un restaurante muy mexicano cerca de las pirámides. Kevin y Safia

Today was a day full of activities. I had ESMEX (estructura socioeconómica de México) at seven in the morning. My teacher is a funny, energetic man, and today he danced and joked with the students in my class. After a fun class I had a surprise test in accounting! I had to fill out a storage card. The rest of the day was calmer. I had a lot of free time so I did my homework and sent messages to my family and friends in the United States. After school I went to a gym with my sister, Mayra, and her friends for her practice for Playback. The dance seems really cool! Safia                                                                

Today was a normal Monday for me!  I had two classes with our teacher and also, during the morning, I went to Caminando Unidos with Ashley, Kayla and Tim.  We played with the youngest children.  We hung out outside, we sang ‘The Itsy-Bitsy Spider’ and we blew a lot of bubbles!  The children are precious!  After classes, I went to Power Gym and when I returned to the school, I discovered many Exeter students who were working with other students from La Salle. Tim was very focused as he cut tree images for his map project and Greg and Conrad worked very hard on their history timeline. This week is exam week for us and we will be working on projects and essays and we will be studying for exams in each one of our classes. Emily

Hoy fue un día lleno de actividades. Tuve ESMEX (estructura socioeconómica de México) a las siete de la mañana.   Mi profesor es un hombre muy chistoso y energético, y hoy él bailó y bromeó con los alumnos de mi salón. Después de una clase divertido ¡tuve una prueba de sorpresa en contabilidad y tuve que hacer una tarjeta de almacén! El resto del día fue más tranquilo. Tuve mucho tiempo libre, entonces yo hice mi tarea y mandé mensajes a mi familia y amigos de los Estados Unidos. Después de la escuela yo fui a un gimnasio con mi hermana, Mayra, y sus amigas para su práctica de Playback. ¡El baile parece muy padre! Safia              

 

¡Hoy fue un lunes normal para mí!  Tuve dos clases con nuestra maestra y también, durante la mañana, fui a Caminando Unidos con Ashley, Kayla y Tim.  Jugamos con los niños más jóvenes.  ¡Pasamos el tiempo afuera, cantamos ‘The Itsy-Bitsy Spider’ y soplamos muchas burbujas!  ¡Los niños son preciosos!  Después de las clases, fui a Power Gym y cuando regresé a la escuela, descubrí a muchos estudiantes de Exeter que estaban trabajando con otros estudiantes de La Salle. Tim estaba muy concentrado mientras él recortaba las imágenes de árboles para su proyecto del mapa y Greg y Conrad trabajaron muy duro en su línea de tiempo. Esta semana es la semana de los exámenes para nosotros y estaremos trabajando en proyectos y ensayos y estudiaremos para los exámenes de cada una de nuestras clases. Emily

Today was, more or less, a normal day for me.  This week marks the beginning of our exams which we have in each class and which make up a large percentage of our final grades and therefore I had a lot of homework tonight.  Right after school I had to work with my group of Mexican classmates from Esemex (Socioeconomic Structure of Mexico) class; we had a map project where we had to make a map of five of the Mexican states with economic, social, political and physical (rivers, mountain ranges, flora, fauna etc.) information on it.  Here we have a lot of group work and it seems to be one of the primary focuses of the education at La Salle, but for us, the Exeter students, we are accustomed to doing our homework on our own way since almost all of our work there is of an independent nature.  I think that this type of education (in groups) has its merits but I also think that it indicates that a philosophy exists here is Mexico that states that life is a communal activity and that to do things in groups is best whereas in the United States the ideal of “the self made man” dominates the culture.  This Mexican ideal doesn’t only manifest itself in school but rather is obvious when everybody gives each other kisses upon meeting each other, or when my brother’s classmates come to or house to share the wireless internet.  The sense of community here is palpable.  Tim

 

Since we have arrived at the middle of the semester here at La Salle, we not have to prepare for exams in all of our classes.   This week I have exams in my Administration class, in addition to my Socioeconomic Structure of Mexico class.  For my Economics class, I have to write an essay that gives a theoretical analysis of the cost of production for a business, and the repercussions of trying to raise the level of production.  I’m a little bit nervous about the tests that I will have to take because although my teachers have reviewed the important information, it’s going to be pretty difficult to remember all of the points that I have in my notebook.  Today, after school, I worked with some members of my history class on two projects that are worth the majority of our grade.  When I arrived at home, I ate quickly with my brother and took a nap before starting my homework.  This has been such a busy week! Hoy era un día más o menos cotidiano para mí.  Esta semana empiezan nuestros exámenes en cada clase que son un gran porcentaje de nuestras calificaciones finales y por eso tenía mucha tarea esta noche.  Inmediatamente después de las clases necesitaba trabajar con mi grupo de compañeros mexicanos de la clase de Esemex (Estructura Socioeconómica de México); teníamos un proyecto para el que necesitábamos hacer un mapa de cinco de los estados mexicanos con información económica, social, político, y física (ríos, montañas, flora, fauna, etc.).  Aquí tenemos mucho trabajo en grupo y es un punto central de la educación de La Salle pero nosotros, los alumnos de Exeter, estamos acostumbrados a hacer nuestra tarea de manera individual porque casi todos allá son trabajos independientes.  Creo que este tipo de educación (en grupo) tiene sus méritos pero también creo que esto muestra una filosofía que existe aquí en México: que la vida es una actividad comunal y que hacer cosas en grupo es mejor mientras que en los Estados Unidos el ideal de “el hombre que se hace a uno mismo” domina la cultura.  Este ideal mexicano no sólo se manifiesta en la escuela sino es obvio cuando todo el mundo se dan besos cuando se ven o cuando los compañeros de clase de mi hermano vienen a nuestra casa para compartir el internet de “wireless.”  La comunidad es palpable aquí. Como casi hemos llegado a la mitad del semestre acá en La Salle, ya tenemos que preparar para exámenes en todas nuestras clases.  Esta semana tengo exámenes en mis clases de administración y de estructuras socioeconómicas de México.   Para mi clase de economía, tengo que escribir un ensayo que analiza teoréticamente el costo de producción de una empresa y las repercusiones de tratar de elevar el nivel de producción.  Estoy un poquito nervioso sobre los exámenes que me tocan porque aunque mis profesores han repasado la información importante, va a ser muy difícil recordar todos los apuntes que tengo en mi cuaderno.   Hoy, después de la escuela, trabajé con algunos compañeros de mi clase de historia en dos proyectos que valen la mayoría de nuestra calificación.  Cuando llegué a mi casa, comí rápidamente con mi hermano  y tomé una siesta antes de empezar me tarea.   ¡Ha sido una semana muy ocupada! Wednesday was the calm before the storm. Everyone was studying for their Mexican Socieconomic Structure test and getting ready for Saint Valentin´s Day. It was a relaxing day, in Conrad and Greg´s salon they studied for their tests and turned in a paper. The only exception to the tranquility of Wednesday was Psychology class. In that class, Becca, Kevin and Alice´s salon played a game called “Costumes.” Six students left the room and the rest of the group choose a costume that represented their personality. One girl was a chameleon, another was an armadillo, and one girl was even a strawberry lollipop. Half of the six students were very angry and offended and one girl cried in front of the whole class. It was a very strange experience. After, Kevin, Becca, Alice and Tim went with some friends in their class to the Mall to eat sushi and go to the Movies. We were all very excited because our friend Hector drove us in his “Mini Cooper.” How cool! After eating, our Mexican friends wanted to watch “Atonement” at the movies. During the movie, we had to use the Spanish subtitles because we couldn't understand the English accents. Everyone liked the movie and afterwards we went home to study and get ready for Valentine´s Day. Conrad and Kevin

El miércoles fue la calma antes de la tempestad. Todos estaban estudiando para sus exámenes del Estructura Socioeconómica de México y preparándose para el día de San Valentín. Era un día tranquilo, en el salón de Conrad y Greg ellos estudiaron para sus exámenes y entregaron un ensayo. La única excepción a la tranquilidad fue la clase de psicología. En esta clase el salón de Kevin, Becca y Alice jugaron un juego llamado “Disfraces.” Seis estudiantes salieron el cuarto, y todo el salón escogió  “un disfraz” para la persona que representara su personalidad. Una chica fue un camarón, otro fue armadillo y una chica fue una pastilla de fresa. La mitad de los seis estaban muy enojados y ofendidos y una chica lloró en frente de todo el salón. Fue una experiencia muy extraña.Después, Kevin, Becca, Alice y Tim fueron con algunos amigos de su salón a las Gallerías para comer sushi e ir al cine. Estamos muy emocionados porque nuestro amigo, Héctor, nos llevó en su “Mini Cooper.” ¡Qué padre! Después de comer, nuestros amigos mexicanos vieron “Expiación de deseo y pecado” en el cine. Durante la película, necesitamos usar los subtítulos españoles porque no podíamos entender los acentos ingleses. We formed a hypothesis: we have so many exams this week for a reason, in order to calm everyone down on this day of love and friendship (you should listen to songs by Reik to get an idea of what love and friendship means here in Mexico.) We were wrong. When we entered the school, everyone was dressed in red and pink. All of the girls had straightened their hair and put on makeup with extra sparkles. The classrooms were full of huge balloons. Full. The tables were covered with flowers, chocolates, and other sweets. Ashley’s first class was gym, but all of her classmates stayed in the classroom to make valentines (not to study for the two tests they had.) Who wants to buy a kiss for fifty cents? Our good friends Mohi and Kayla, with their Playback team, sold kisses today. (Playback is a dance competition that is in two weeks, and they have been practicing a lot with their coach.) Everyone on their team was dressed in red and had posters with big red lips painted on them. When they kissed the boys (on the cheek), they left an image of their lips with all the lipstick that they were wearing. Who wants to get married? You can receive an “official” document, a ring, and a video (sent to you via email) and all for only one dollar and fifty cents. During the ceremony, every chants “Kiss, kiss!” You would be surprised to know the number of students who got married today. After the crazy day in school Kevin went to Alice and Mohi´s house to eat.  He gave flowers to Margot, the girls' mom, for Valentine’s day!  Alice, Kevin and Mohi ate a delicious meal and then went to Sam´s Club and Superama to try the free samples.  Then they went to Kayla’s house and then to salsa class.  At the end of salsa class, Sra. gave permission to Alice, Mohi and Tim to go with Jorge to Mambo Café to practice their salsa moves with live music.  When the girls returned home to change their clothes Alice found a beautiful bouquet of flowers on her bed!  The exotic flowers looked like flowers that you would find in herbology class in Harry Potter and the girls named the bouquet Esmeralda.  After the great surprise the girls left to go to Mambo and they had a fun evening, dancing salsa!   Valentine’s Day was incredible, and much more extravagant than in the United States.  It was a day full of surprises for everyone! Teníamos una hipótesis: tenemos tantos exámenes esta semana por una razón, para tranquilizar a todos en este día de amor y amistad (debes escuchar a las canciones de Reik para obtener una idea de qué es el amor y amistad aquí en México.) Estábamos equivocados. Cuando entramos en la escuela, todos estaban llevando rojo y rosa. Todas las chicas habían planchado el pelo y se ponían maquillaje con muchos brillos. Los salones estaban llenos de globos grandísimos. Llenos. Las mesas estaban cubiertas de flores, chocolates y otros dulces. La primera clase de Ashley  fue deportes, pero sus compañeros quedaron en el salón para hacer tarjetas de San Valentín (no para estudiar para los dos exámenes que tenían.) ¿Quién quiere comprar besos por cinco pesos? Nuestras buenas amigas Mohi y Mikayla, con su equipo de Playback, vendían besos hoy. (Playback es un concurso de baile que será en dos semanas y ellas han ensayando mucho con un entrenador.) Todas las del equipo llevaban rojo  y tenían cartas pintadas con labios grandes. Cuando besaron a los niños (en la mejilla), les dejaron una imagen de sus labios color pintalabios. ¿Quién quiere casarse? Puedes recibir un documento “oficial”, un anillo y un video (por correo electrónico) sólo por quince pesos. Durante la ceremonia, todos corean “¡beso, beso!” Te sorprendería saber cuántos estudiantes se casaron hoy.  Después el día loco en la escuela, Kevin fue a la casa de Alice y Mohi para comer.  El dio flores a Margot, la madre de las chicas, por el día de San Valentín.  Kevin, Mohi y Alice comieron una comida muy rica y después fueron a Sam´s Club y Superama para probar las muestras gratis.  Después ellos fueron a la casa de Kayla y entonces a la clase de salsa.  Al fin de la clase de salsa la Sra. dio permiso a Alice, Mohi y Tim para ir con Jorge a Mambo Café para practicar sus movimientos de salsa con música en vivo.  ¡Cuando ellas regresaron a su casa para cambiar su ropa para bailar Alice encontró un bouquet muy bonito en su cama! Las flores exóticas parecían como flores que ustedes encontrarían en la clase de herbología en Harry Potter y las chicas llamaron al ramo Esmeralda.  ¡Después de la gran sorpresa las chicas salieron a Mambo y lo pasaron muy bien bailando salsa! El Día de San Valentín fue increíble, mucho más extravagante que este día en los Estados Unidos.  ¡Fue un día lleno de sorpresas para todos! ¡Os queremos!  Alice y Ashley

This Friday, we had a good day.  It was the lull after Valentine’s Day, and no one was wearing chic clothes like yesterday.  Some of us had exams, but now we have a weekend to relax.  After school, Mikayla and Mohi danced in Playback practice again.  There's practice every day until the competition on February 28th!  There was a little girl drama in Playback.  Another group tried to say that we should be disqualified because we have a coach, but what they didn't know was that we are following all the rules.  Take that!  Afterwards, Mikayla and Mohi went to Wal-Mart for some things like locks for our lockers (a little late!) and a diary for our memories.  At five, Becca, Emily, Tim, Alice, Mohi and Mikayla went to Power Gym, and they had a great workout.  They tried the Yoga class, too!  They had a lot of fun.  Watching the instructor, it appeared that she was under the “jelly legs” spell from Harry Potter.  When Alice and Mohi went back home, the others went to a restaurant called Formaggio.  It was a rich and elegant restaurant.  They had a conversation about their heritage.  They were all in a serious mood, and they learned a lot about each other and their families.  After Comida Hannah, Andreina, and Ashley went to a soccer game at another private school here in Cuernavaca that´s called Marymount.  It was a great game, the La Salle team won thirteen to zero!  After the game the girls went with the team to celebrate at a restaurant.  Then Hannah went back to her house to say goodbye to Bob and Sandy, the retired Americans from Seattle that had been living in her house for two weeks.  They ate tamales with mole and then Hannah and her sister Daniela went to the Reik concert at Ezenza, one of the clubs here.  Andreina, Safia, and Conrad also went to the concert and the four of them had a lot of fun.  The music was amazing, better live than on their CDs!  They danced and sang a lot even though Andreina was the only American who knew all of the words to the songs.  She knew more than the Mexicans!  This day was a great start to the weekend. Este viernes fue un buen día.  Fue la calma después del día de San Valentín y nadie se vistió con ropa de moda como ayer.  Algunos de nosotros tomamos exámenes, pero ahora, tenemos un fin de semana para relajar.  Después de la escuela, Mikayla y Mohi bailaron en la práctica de Playback otra vez.  ¡Hay práctica todos los días hasta la competencia en 28 de febrero! Había un poco de drama sobre Playback.  Otro grupo trataba de decir que debemos ser descalificadas porque tenemos un instructor, pero lo que ellas no sabían era que estamos en acuerdo con todas las reglas. ¡Toma eso! Entonces, Mikayla y Mohi fueron a Wal-Mart para algunas cosas como cerraduras para sus armarios (¡un poco tarde!) y un diario por sus memorias.  A las cinco, Becca, Emily, Tim, Alice, Mohi y Mikayla fueron a Power Gym, y ellos hicieron mucho ejercicio.  ¡Ellos probaron la clase de Yoga, también! Se divirtieron mucho. La instructora parecía estar  bajo el hechizo llamado “piernas de gelatinas” de Harry Potter. Cuando Alice y Mohi regresaron a casa, los otros salieron a un restaurante se llama “Formaggio.”  Era un restaurante muy rico y elegante.  Tuvieron una conversación sobre su herencia.  Todos estaban en un humor serio y aprendieron mucho de uno al otro y sus familias.  Después de comer Hannah, Andreina y Ashley fueron a un partido de fútbol a  otra escuela privada aquí en Cuernavaca que se llama Marymount.  Era un partido muy bueno; ¡el equipo de la Salle ganó trece a cero!  Después del partido ellas fueron con el equipo para celebrar a un restaurante.  Entonces Hannah regresó a su casa para despedir a Bob y Sandy, los estadounidenses jubilados de Seattle que vivieron en su casa por dos semanas.  Ellos comieron tamales con mole y entonces Hannah y su hermana Daniela fueron al concierto de Reik en Ezenza, uno de los antros de aquí.  Andreina, Safia y Conrad también fueron al concierto y ellos cuatro se divirtieron mucho.  ¡La música del grupo fue maravillosa, mejor en vivo que en sus CDs! Ellos bailaban y cantaban mucho aunque Andreina era la única estadounidense que conocía todas las palabras de las canciones.  ¡Ella sabía más que los mexicanos!  Ese día fue buen principio al fin de semana. At nine in the morning, we met at school to get on the bus and go to Mexico City.  The first place we visited was the Museum of Dolores Olmedo Patiño.  She was a good friend of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, and she collected their works and those of other artists of her time as well.  Her house was very pretty!  In the giant garden there were many hairless dogs (the famous Xoloitzcuintle) and peacocks.  How strange!  Then we went to Xochimilco, a series of canals.  We traveled on an intricately decorated boat called “La Adriana.”  There were many party boats on the river, as well as mariachi bands.  They even sang us a song!  Leah helped steer the boat with the punting pole.  It was as if we were in Venice!  After that, we went to La Casa Azul—Frida Kahlo’s house.  We saw many of her personal effects, such as her bed, easel and wheelchair.  There were many works of art by both Frida and her husband Diego.  We even saw the urn with her ashes located in her room!  It was very interesting.  We ate lunch at a restaurant that was near a bazaar.  There were many parks and small stores on the street, and everyone had some free time to explore.  The bazaar was a tad bit overwhelming, but very fun.  There were many things, and many Exonians bought gifts for their family and friends back in the States.  It was a long and exciting day!  Leah and Katrina

A las nueve de la mañana nos encontramos en la escuela para ir al Distrito Federal.  El primer lugar que visitamos fue el Museo Dolores Olmedo Patiño.  Ella era una buena amiga de Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo y ella recogía las obras de los dos y también de otros artistas en su época.  ¡Su casa era muy bonita!  En el jardín gigante, había muchos perros que no tenían pelo (el famoso Xoloitzcuintle) y pavos reales.  ¡Qué extraño!  Entonces, fuimos a Xochimilco, una serie de canales.  Viajamos en un barco muy decorado, que se llamaba “La Adriana.”  Había muchos barcos en la canal con fiestas y bandas de mariachis.  ¡Nos cantaron una canción!  Leah ayudó a conducir el barco (llamado trajinera) con el largo palo.  Era como estar en Venecia.  Después de esto, fuimos a La Casa Azul—la casa de Frida Kahlo.  Vimos sus cosas personales, como su cama, su caballete y su silla de ruedas.  Había muchísimas obras por Frida y su esposo, Diego Rivera.  ¡Aún vimos la urna con sus cenizas en su cuarto!  Era muy interesante.  Almorzamos en un restaurante que estaba cerca del bazar del sábado.  Había muchos parques y tiendas pequeñas en la calle y todos tuvimos tiempo libre para explorar el área.  El bazar era algo avasallador, pero muy divertido.  Había muchas cosas y muchos de los estudiantes de Exeter compraron regalos para sus familias y amigos en los Estados Unidos.  ¡Fue un día muy largo y emocionante!  Leah y Katrina

After a week of our first exams, we needed “dormingo” (sleepy Sunday) more than usual.  Becca, Kayla and Emily spent the night at Alice and Mohi’s house the night before and they had a great time talking and laughing. In the morning we woke up at 10:00 to find a surprise in the kitchen. Margot, Alice and Mohi’s mom, had cooked delicious pancakes for us, and Alice cut a ripe pineapple that was almost as good as the mangos we ate in Mexico City. After eating, we sunbathed by the pool, reading our books and listening to our iPods. It was very hot, and all of us jumped in the pool quickly even though it was VERY cold! Emily went with her family to an old style ranch house for lunch, which she said was the best meal of the trip, and the rest of us went to the Centro (downtown) with Tim to eat, walk and shop. The Centro is a very fun Sunday activity. Now we have a favorite restaurant called The Universal – we like the quesadillas with guacamole and beans, and the large glasses of lemonade. Mohi and Becca bought pina colada and banana smoothies as a treat. We walked through the market, a maze of sellers and buyers. It reminded us of the maze in Harry Potter, the third task of the Triwizard Tournament, with obstacles and surprises around every corner. We only stayed in the market for a few minutes because it was very chaotic. We went instead to the small shops of jewelry and clothes, where Alice, Mohi and Kayla bought some Mexican sweaters. We bought things for our friends, family and boy/girlfriends.  We’re excited to give you gifts! At night we returned to our houses. Becca ate dinner with her mother because she hadn’t seen her for two whole days and they had a lot to talk about! Dinner with her mom is one of her favorite parts of the day, because she always has lots of stories and loves to listen to Becca’s. She worked on her meditation, which she is writing with her English teacher at Exeter, and everyone went to bed early to rest up for the week ahead – only three more left! Kayla and Becca

¡Después de una semana de exámenes necesitamos “dormingo” más que lo usual!  Becca, Kayla y Emily pasaron la noche en la casa de Alice y Mohi y lo pasaron bien hablando y reyendo. Por la mañana  nos despertamos a las diez para encontrar una sorpresa en la cocina.  Margot, la madre de Alice y Mohi, había cocinado “pancakes” deliciosos para nosotros, y Alice cortó una piña madura que estaba casi tan buena como los mangos que comimos en México. Después de comer, nosotras tomamos el sol cerca de la alberca, leimos nuestros libros y escuchamos nuestros iPods. Hacía mucho calor, y  todas nadamos muy rápido aunque la alberca estba muy fría. Emily fue con su familia a una hacienda para la comida (ella nos dijo que fue la mejorcomida  del viaje) y el resto de nosotros fuimos al centro con Tim para comer, caminar y comprar. El centro es una actividad de los domingos muy divertida. Tenemos un restaurante favorito ahora, que se llama “El Universal” – a nosotros nos gustan las quesadillas con guacamol y frijoles, y también los vasos grandes de limonada. Mohi y Becca compraron “smoothies” de pina colada y banana. Caminamos por el mercado, un laberinto de vendedores y compradores. Nos recordó al laberinto en Harry Potter, la tarea tercera del torneo de tres magos, con obstáculos y sorpresas alrededor de cada rincón. Solo nos quedamos en el mercado por algunos minutos, porque fue muy caótico. Fuimos en vez a las tiendas pequeñas de joyas y ropa, donde Alice, Mohi y Kayla compraron algunos suéteres mexicanos. Compramos cosas para nuestras familias, amigos y novio/as.  Estamos deseando darles los regalos. Por la noche, nosotros regresamos a nuestras casas. ¡Becca cenó con su madre porque no la había visto en dos días y tenían mucho de hablar! La cena con su madre es una de sus partes favoritas del día, porque ella siempre tiene muchos cuentos y a ella le gusta escuchar los de Becca. Becca trabajó en su meditación, que está escribiendo con su maestra de inglés en Exeter, y todos se acostaron temprano para descansar para la semana próxima – ¡solamente quedan dos! Kayla y Becca

This Monday, everyone had the day free.  The holiday, in reality, was Tuesday, but it was easier for our school to close on Monday.  The night before, Alice and Mohi spent the night with Kayla and Becca at Las Quintas with Becca´s father, and Kayla´s Mother and her fiancée. All of the girls were disappointed that the Jacuzzi was chilly!  In the morning, Tim joined the girls and everyone sunbathed almost the whole day.  They played pool games, ate at Las Quintas restaurant and listened to their iPods (Mexican music, of course).  They played a pool game that was especially fun: it is similar to the game in Harry Potter, Quidich, but they didn´t have brooms, and they played in water, not in the air.  In the afternoon, many people went to Las Quintas to have salsa class outside in the garden!  It was an exciting class because Kayla fell on her head when Jorge flipped her over his back. Ouch!  But now, she is much better.  Many people of the group visited Marta another time for the delicious yogurt!  Kayla and Kat

Este lunes, todos nosotros tuvimos el día libre.  El día de vacaciones, en realidad, era el martes, pero era más fácil para nuestra escuela a cerrar el lunes.  La noche anterior, Alice y Mohi pasaron la noche con Kayla y Becca en Las Quintas con el padre de Becca, y la mamá de Kayla y su prometido.  ¡Todas estas chicas estaban desilusionadas porque el jacuzzi estaba frío!  En la mañana, Tim se unió las chicas y todos tomaron el sol casi todo el día.  Ellos jugaron juegos en la alberca,  comieron  en el  restaurante de Las Quintas y escucharon sus iPods (música mexicana, obviamente).  Jugaron un juega de alberca que era especialmente divertido: es similar al juego en Harry Potter, Quidich, pero no teníamos escobas y jugamos en el agua, no en el aire.  ¡Por la tarde, muchas personas vinieron a Las Quintas para tomar la clase de salsa afuera en el jardín!  Fue una clase emocionante porque Kayla cayó de la cabeza cuando Jorge la echó al aire sobre su espalda. ¡Ay! Pero ahora, ella está mucho mejor.  ¡Muchas personas del grupo visitaron Marta otra vez para comer el yogur delicioso!  Kayla y Kat

Today was our first day back at school after a fun, long weekend. After a morning full of learning, Alice went to Kayla’s house when she and Mohi were finished with dance practice. They continue to work hard to prepare for their performance in Playback, which is only two weeks away! The three girls spent time together for a few hours before deciding to go to the Centro. Kate, Kayla’s mom who was still in Cuernavaca, was looking for a wedding dress, and the girls wanted to help. They went to a shop with Kayla’s mom and her fiancé, Scott. Mohi used her Spanish to ask the owner of the shop if it was possible to try on a dress. The first dress that Kate tried was very pretty, and she decided to buy it. She looked just as pretty as Hermione Granger from Harry Potter when she was ready to go to the Yule Ball with Viktor Krum.  Alice, Mohi and Kayla were very useful in the process of purchasing the dress! During all this, Rebecca went to the hairdresser with her sister Mariana. The hairdresser cut her hair for ninety pesos (nine dollars) – very cheap! And after, the sisters went to a café with some of Mariana’s friends from the university to have a coffee. It is very fun to hang out after classes with each other and our Mexican siblings, and it is an important part of our lives here.   While the others were buying a dress and were at a hair salon, Hannah was at her house with her family and with Conrad.  Conrad and Hannah decided to spend some time in the sun and swimming.  After an hour, the clouds came so they went inside the house to start their homework.  They wanted to watch Superbad but it took more than three hours to download and Conrad had to go home.  A lot of things happened today and everyone had a good day. Hoy fue el primer día en la escuela después del fin de semana largo y divertido. Después de una mañana llena de aprendizaje, Alice fue a la casa de Kayla cuando ella y Mohi terminaron con la práctica de baile. ¡Ellas continúan trabajando mucho para preparar para su desempeño en Playback, que va a llegar en solamente dos semanas! Las tres chicas pasaron tiempo juntas unas horas antes de decidir ir al centro. Kate, la madre de Kayla, que todavía estaba en Cuernavaca, estaba buscando un vestido de boda y las chicas querían ayudar. Ellas fueron a una  tienda con la madre de Kayla y su novio, Scott. Mohi usó su español para preguntarle al dueño de la tienda si era posible probarse un vestido. El primer vestido que Kate se probó fue precioso y ella decidió comprarlo. Ella estaba tan bonita como Hermione Granger de Harry Potter cuando ella estaba lista para ir al Yule Ball con Viktor Krum. ¡Alice, Mohi y Kayla fueron muy útiles en el proceso de comprar el vestido! Mientras, Rebecca fue a la peluquería con su hermana Mariana. ¡La peluquera cortó su pelo por noventa pesos (nueve dólares) – muy barato! Y después, las hermanas  fueron a un café con algunas amigas de Mariana de la universidad para tomar un café. Es muy divertido pasar tiempo después de las clases juntos y con nuestros hermanos mexicanos, y es una parte importante de nuestras vidas aquí.  Mientras las otras estaban comprando un vestido y en la peluquería, Hannah estaba en su casa con su familia y con Conrad.  Conrad y Hannah decidieron pasar la tarde tomando el sol y nadando.  Después de una hora, vinieron las nubes y ellos entraron en la casa para empezar con su tarea.  Ellos querían ver Superbad pero tomó más de tres horas en bajar y Conrad necesitaba regresar a su casa.  Muchas cosas pasaron hoy y todos tuvimos un buen día. Today we went to school and after our classes we went to do our social work Caminando Unidos (walking together). Caminando Unidos is a school for children that for several reasons cannot go to pubic school and we go there to help and play with them. Today Greg, Mohi and Conrad played with children from three to five years of age. We did puzzles and also made playdoh bracelets for the little girls. After, Greg and Conrad entertained them with a juggling demonstration. Later they ate lunch and we returned to our houses. In the evening, a bunch of us went out for sushi at the Galerías mall. It has become one of our favorite places to go out. Tasty sushi is not the only pro about The Sushi Roll, they also make killer lemonade. Our favorite part is the 2 for 1 deal that runs all the way from Monday to Wednesday! Afterwards, we sometimes go to the “VIP” section of the movie theatre where you can purchase delicious nutella and caramel crepes. Mohi and Conrad

Hoy fuimos a la escuela y después de nuestras clases fuimos a nuestra social en Caminando Unidos. Caminando Unidos es la escuela para los niños que por diversos motivos no pueden asistir  a la escuela pública donde vamos para ayudar y jugar con ellos. Hoy Greg, Mohi y Conrad jugaron con los niños de tres a cinco años de edad. Hicimos rompe cabezas y también hicimos pulseras de plastilina para las niñas. Despues, Greg y Conrad les entretuvieron con una muestra de malabarismo. Luego ellos comieron y nosotros regresamos a nuestras casas. Esta tarde, un grupo de nosotros salimos para comer sushi en Galerías. Se ha convertido uno de nuestros lugares preferidos para ir. El sushi sabroso no es la única cosa positiva del Sushi Roll, también hacen una limonada para morirse. ¡Nuestra parte favorita es la promoción 2 por 1 que corre de lunes hasta miércoles! Después, a veces vamos a la sección “VIP” del cine donde puedes comprar crepas deliciosas de nutella y cajeta. Mohi y Conrad

Although we have been here for exactly one month, there is something we still haven’t become used to, the garbage and recycling. Sometimes it is hard to enjoy a Mango Boing juice box for the impending tension that comes with throwing it out.  The moment you walk over the garbage area we spend at least a few eternal minutes reading each detailed label trying to decide the true fate of our trash. The truth is, there are five or six different places to dispose your waste.  There is a specific place for organic waste, recyclables, juice boxes, and the list goes on.  To make matter worse, every day the bins get switched around. How confusing! In Exeter we just started composting but it seems that Mexico, at least our school,  is lightyears ahead of us in terms of maintaining the environment. Maybe we should take this as a lesson and follow in their footsteps. Andreina and Leah

Aunque ya llevamos aquí para un mes exacto, todavía no nos hemos acostumbrado a algo: la basura y el reciclaje.  A veces  es  difícil  disfrutar una caja de jugo de Mango Boing por las tensión que nos causaba cuando es el momento de tirarlo.  Cuando caminamos a la área del as basuras pasamos al menos cinco minutos eternos leyendo los carteles llenos de detalles e intentando decidir el  verdadero destinode nuestra basura. La verdad es que hay como  cinco o seis basuras diferentes para tirar los residuos.  Hay un lugar específico para residuos orgánicos, cosas reciclables, cartones de jugo, y todo lo demás. Para empeorar la situación, los diferentes cubos para las basuras cambian de lugar cada día. ¡Nos confunde mucho! En Exeter, empezamos a separar residuos orgánicos pero en México, al menos en nuestra escuela, parece que están a años luz de nosotros en lo que se refiere a mantener el medio ambiente. For Rebecca, Kevin and Alice, Friday was movie day. In our Mexican culture class, we watched the movie “Por la libre.” It’s a very funny and interesting Mexican movie that tells the story of two cousins that are traveling through Mexico with the ashes of their grandfather. En Psychology, we watched “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” in Spanish and Communication class, we enjoyed “Casablanca.” It was very interesting to watch these American films in Spanish-- and a little hard. But who can complain about movie day? It’s clear that La Salle is very different than Exeter!
The weather has become more and more hot here! According to Kevin’s mother, February is the most beautiful month in Cuernavaca. For the Mexicans, this is beautiful weather, but for the Americans, it’s hot out! To cool down a group of us went to Emily’s for a pool party. Thursday night, this plan created a lot of confusion in Kevin’s family. He told his family that Friday he wanted to go to Emily’s pool. Because the Spanish word for neighbor and pool are so similar, for the whole next day his parents were asking him “What’s Emily’s neighbor’s name? Who?” Finally, they all realized that everyone was confused. His family told him that in Mexico, you use the word “alberca” for pool and that “piscina” (the word Kevin was saying) was a Spanish word-- and that he better not listen to Senora Gosalvez so much because he would end up speaking like a Spaniard. We all laughed a lot about it. At Emily’s house, everyone swam and had a lot of fun. Afterwards, Emily’s mother made everyone a special treat from America- brownies! Kevin and Safia

Para el salón de Rebecca, Kevin y Alice, viernes fue el día de películas. En nuestra clase de la cultura mexicana, miramos la película “Por la libre.” Es una película mexicana que cuenta el cuento de dos primos que están viajando por México con las cenizas de su abuelo. En la clase de Psicología, miramos “Eterno resplandor de una mente sin recuerdos” en español y en la clase de Comunicación, nos gozamos de “Casablanca”. Era muy interesante mirar estas películas estadounidenses en español-- y un poco difícil. Pero no podemos quejarnos de un día de películas. ¡Está claro que La Salle es muy diferente que Exeter!
¡El tiempo se ha puesto más y más caliente aquí! Según a la madre de Kevin, febrero es el mes más bonito en Cuernavaca. Para los mexicanos, hace buen tiempo, pero los estadounidenses piensan que hace calor. Para enfriarse un grupo de nosotros fuimos a la alberca de Emilia para una fiesta. La noche de jueves, este plan causó mucha confusión en la familia de Kevin. Le dijo a  su familia que iba a ir a la piscina de Emily. Porque “piscina” y “vecina” son tan similares, el próximo día sus padres siempre estaba preguntándole: “¿cómo se llama la vecina de Emily? ¿Quién?” Por fin, se dieron cuenta de que todos estaban confundidos. Su familia le dijo que en México se usa la palabra “alberca” para piscina y que piscina es una palabra española y que el no debe escuchar tanto  a la Señora Gosalvez porque va a hablar como un español. Todos rieron muchísimo. En la casa de Emily, nadaron y se divirtieron mucho. Después, la madre de Emily cocinó un dulce especial de Estados Unidos: ¡brownies! Kevin y Safia

Today was our excursion day of the week and we went to the pyramids of Xochicalco and later the ex-hacienda of Santa Cruz.  Xochicalco prospered from 700 to 900 AC and was an important trade city since it is situated in the center of the country.  The Xochicalco people interacted with ancient people from all regions of Mexico and therefore had an interesting and mixed form of society and culture which we could see from their temples, pyramids and subterranean rooms and passageways.  The ancient city sits on top of a small mountain and from it we could see farmland for miles in all directions.  We were the only group visiting there and it was very calm and quiet (a nice break from the city of Cuernavaca).  Upon finishing our tour we went to the ex-hacienda of Santa Cruz in our bus.  Haciendas are large plantations that used to dominate Mexico’s countryside before the Mexican Revolution (when the farmers partitioned the plantation lands in an attempt to find more equality in Mexico).  Leah’s Mexican family own part of it and had invited us to come for lunch and a relaxing afternoon.  All the families came and we ate a large potluck lunch that consisted of typical Mexican dishes. We also played barefoot soccer on the grass of the garden, saw their land that is still farmland today, swam in the refreshing pool, and explored the worn down buildings that were once used, a long time ago, when the hacienda was functioning. Hoy era nuestro día de excursión  semananal y fuimos a las pirámides de Xochicalco y luego a la ex-hacienda de Santa Cruz.  Xochicalco, que prosperó desde 700 hasta 900 DC, era una ciudad de comercio muy importante porque está situada en el centro del país.  El pueblo de Xochicalco interactuaba con los pueblos antiguos de todas partes de México y por esto tenía una sociedad y cultura muy mezclada e interesante que pudimos ver en sus templos, pirámides y espacios subterráneos.  Las ruinas de la ciudad se encuentran encima de una pequeña montaña y pudimos ver el campo por muchas millas en todas direcciones.  Eramos el único grupo que visitaba la zona y era muy tranquilo y relajante (una cambio agradable con respecto a la ciudad de Cuernavaca).  Al terminar nuestra visita fuimos en autobús a la ex-hacienda de Santa Cruz.  Las Haciendas son plantaciones grandes que dominaban la tierra de México antes la Revolución cuando los campesinos repartieron las  tierras en un intento de encontrar más igualdad en México.  La familia mexicana de Leah eran los dueños de una parte de esta tierra y nos invitaron a comer y a una tarde de relajación.  Todas las familias vinieron y comimos una comida grande de "traje" con comida típica de México. También jugamos fútbol en el césped del jardín, vimos los camos que todavía se usan para cultivar,  nadamos en la alberca fresca y exploramos los edificios parcialmente derruidos que hace muchos años se usaban cuando la hacienda estaba en funcionamiento.  Ashley y Tim

After a long and busy week, I was looking forward to a day in the house with my family.  I slept very late and when I woke up, I ate a delicious breakfast: fresh fruit and waffles with Nutella.  I planned on not leaving the house the entire day but when my brother and my mother informed me that I was going to choose the dessert for lunch, I was unable to resist going with them to “El Globo”--a local bakery with a variety of delicious sweet breads, cookies and cakes.  It was not easy to choose a cake but finally, we bought a cake made with four different chocolates.  My mother’s sister, her husband and her two children came to the house to eat with us.  We ate outside, and we enjoyed fish tacos and of course, the four chocolate cake.  When we finished lunch, “a surprise” arrived to the house… my Mexican father!  He attended a meeting in Cancún, México for five days and because he does not like to fly on airplanes, he drove thirty-six hours roundtrip.  I am happy that he has returned!  One more time, I acted against my original plans when my father invited us all to have a coffee in a place named ‘The Italian Coffee Company’.  We had a good time talking about each other’s past week…what a great way to end the weekend! Since I tired myself out a lot on Saturday in our excursion to Xochicalco and the hacienda that belongs to Leah´s host family, I didn´t have a lot of energy when I woke up Sunday morning.  It was extremely sunny by the afternoon so my family decided that we had to have a picnic on the terrace outside of my house.  While my mom cooked French fries, my cousin and I prepared homemade cheeseburgers.  Although I have always considered hamburgers to be a very normal and almost boring food, it was really exciting to mix a variety of Mexican spices into the meat.  After cooking, I enjoyed a relaxing meal with my mom, grandmother, and my two host cousins from the Federal District (Mexico City).   The terrace has a perfect view of our garden and some flowers that hummingbirds really love.  At six o’ clock we had to carry my host cousins to the bus station so that they could return to Mexico City.  Conveniently, at the same time my brother was returning from the city where he spent the weekend with his dad.  After picking him up, we had did some shopping in the supermarket and returned home to prepare for the new week. Después de una semana larga y ocupada, estaba esperando un día en la casa con mi familia.  Me dormí muy tarde y cuando me levanté, comí un desayuno delicioso: fruta fresca y waffles con Nutella.  Planeé no salir de la casa en todo el día pero cuando mi hermano y mi madre me informaron que yo iba a escoger el postre para la comida, yo no pude resistir ir con ellos a "El Globo" –una panadería local con una variedad de pan dulce, galletas y pasteles ricos.  No fue fácil escoger un pastel pero finalmente, compramos un pastel de cuatro chocolates. La hermana de mi madre, su esposo y su dos hijos vinieron a la casa para comer con nosotros.  Comimos afuera de la casa y gozamos tacos de pescado y claro que sí, el pastel de cuatro chocolates.  ¡Cuando terminamos la comida, “una sorpresa” llegó a la casa… mi padre mexicano!  Él asistió a una reunión en Cancún, México, por cinco días y como a él no le gusta volar en aviones, él manejó treinta y seis horas viaje redondo.  ¡Estoy contenta que él ha regresado!  Y una vez más, actué contra mis planes originales ya que mi padre nos invitó a todos a tomar un café en un lugar llamado ‘The Italian Coffee Company’.  Lo pasamos muy bien hablando de cómo estuvo la semana… ¡qué buena manera de terminar el fin de semana! Como me cansé muchísimo el sábado en nuestra excursión a Xochicalco y la hacienda de la familia anfitriona de Leah, no tenía mucha energía cuando me levanté el domingo.  Hacía mucho sol al mediodía, por lo tanto mi familia decidió tener un picnic en la terraza afuera de nuestra casa.  Mientras mi mamá cocinó papas fritas, mi primo y yo cocinamos hamburguesas caseras con queso.  Aunque siempre he pensado que las hamburguesas son una comida muy normal, estuvo muy divertido mezclar una variedad de especies mexicanas en la carne.  Después de cocinar, disfruté de una comida muy tranquila con mi mamá, mi abuelita y mis dos primos del D.F.  En la terraza se puede apreciar una vista perfecta de nuestro jardín y unas flores que les gustan a los picaflores.  A las seis tuvimos que llevar a mis primos a la estación de camiones para que pudieran regresar a la ciudad de México. Convenientemente, a la vez mi hermano estaba regresando de la ciudad donde pasó el fin de semana allá con su papá.  Después de recogerle, fuimos de compras un rato en el súper y regresamos a la casa a preparar para la nueva semana. Monday was an easy day in school for Alice, Becca, and Kevin as they only had three classes.  After school everyone returned home for lunch and then came back at five thirty for salsa lessons.  Hannah and Becca ran into each other in the gym and lifted weights together before going to salsa lessons.  Kevin and Alice went to Power Gym instead of the lessons, but Alice returned to the school in time for the dancers to show off their new moves.  They all learned an extremely difficult trick where the boys spin their partners in a way so they are leaning back onto the calf of the boy, and then the boy kicks his leg to give the girl a push so she is standing upright.  After salsa Jorge, Tim’s brother, took Alice, Hannah, Becca, Mohi, Kayla, and Tim to go get yogurt.  It was the first time that Mohi and Hannah tried this delicious yogurt.  Everyone got half liters, and everyone finished them in record timing.  The favorite flavor among the group was strawberry and peach. El lunes fue un día muy fácil en la escuela para Alicia, Becca y Kevin porque ellos solamente tenían tres clases.  Después de la escuela todos fueron a la casa para la comida y entonces regresaron a la escuela para las lecciones de salsa.  Hannah y Becca se encontraron en el gimnasio y levantaron pesas juntas antes de ir a las lecciones de salsa.  Kevin y Alice fueron a Power Gym en lugar de las lecciones, pero Alicia regresó a la escuela temprano para que los bailarines demostraran sus nuevos movimientos.  Hoy ellos aprendieron un movimiento muy difícil donde los chicos voltean a su pareja de manera que las cabezas de las chicas descansan en la pantorrilla de los chicos.  Entonces el chico patea la pierna para empujar a la chica a la posición original.  Después de la clase de salsa Jorge, el hermano de Tim, llevó a Alice, Hannah, Becca, Mohi, Kayla y Tim a comprar yogur.  Fue la primera vez que Mohi y Hannah probaron este yogur sabroso.  Todos compraron medios litros y todos los terminaron en tiempo record.  El sabor favorito en el grupo era fresa con melocotón. Today was just a regular school day for me. I had a lot of free time in the morning, so I was able to do homework and talk to my friends.  After my break came my most challenging class: administration. We will be having a test tomorrow, so we spent the class reviewing the labor laws that we have been learning about. After school, Kayla, Vanessa, Mayra, two other girls from La Salle and I hung out to figure out details for the Playback competition. We talked to Vanessa´s friend about music and practice times. We did not start practicing because many of the other girls in the group could not come, but I can tell that everything will turn out well. The competition is going to be in a month. Safia      

 Last night, I was a little nervous because I had my first exam in La Salle today.  I was studying for my Biology exam and suddenly, my house lost power.  But, I studied by candlelight and today, I took the exam.  I am happy that the exam is in the past and although it was difficult, I think that I did well.  After classes, I ate with my family, I rested and I worked outside.  I am lucky that I am able to do my homework in the sun!  Then, I went to Power Gym with Becca, Kayla and Tim.  After exercising, we rewarded ourselves with delicious Thai food.  Kayla wanted to try “La Casa Thai” restaurant that is close to her house and the restaurant was a success.  The food was natural, fresh and full of flavor.  Also, there was a pond in the restaurant and exotic and cool photographs.  Surely, we are going to return to the restaurant very soon! Hoy fue un día regular para mí. Tuve mucho tiempo libre durante la mañana, entonces pude hacer mi tarea y platicar con mis amigos. Después de mi receso tuve mi clase más difícil: administración. Tendremos una prueba mañana, entonces usamos la clase para revisar las leyes federales del trabajo. Después de la escuela, Mikayla, Vanessa, Mayra, otras dos niñas de la Salle y yo nos juntamos para decidir los detalles del Playback. Hablamos con un amigo de Vanessa sobre música y el tiempo para practicar.  No empezamos a practicar porque muchas de las personas del grupo no pudieron venir, pero yo sé que todo va a ser perfecto. La competición será en un mes.  Safia    

Anoche, yo estaba un poco nerviosa porque tenía mi primer examen en La Salle el día de hoy.  Yo estaba estudiando para mi examen de Biología y de repente, en mi casa se fue la luz.  Pero, yo estudié con la luz de una vela y hoy hice el examen.  Estoy contenta que el examen quedó en el pasado y aunque fue difícil, creo que me fue bien.  Después de las clases, comí con mi familia, descansé y trabajé afuera.  ¡Tengo suerte ya que yo puedo hacer mi tarea al sol!  Entonces, fui a Power Gym con Becca, Kayla y Tim.  Después de hacer ejercicio, nos consentimos con comida Thai muy rica.  Kayla quería probar “La Casa Thai” cerca de su casa y el restaurante fue un éxito.  La comida era muy natural, fresa y llena de sabor.  También, había una charca en el restaurante y fotografías muy exóticas y geniales.  ¡Seguramente, vamos a regresar al restaurante muy pronto! Today was Ashley’s eighteenth birthday!  Her day began with a very lively rendition of the Mexican birthday song called, “Las Mañanitas,” when she got to class in the morning. It goes like this: “Estas son las mañanitas que cantaba el rey David, hoy por ser día de tu santo te las cantamos a ti, despierta mi bien despierta, mira que ya amaneció, ya los pajaritos cantan la luna ya se metió. Feliz cumpleaños.” Then all of her classmates formed a line and each one gave her a hug and a kiss.  After school all of us went to her house to celebrate with a barbecue.  We ate hamburgers (we all miss American food), swam in her pool, sunbathed and chatted with each other a lot. After blowing the candles she had to literally bite the cake, a Mexican tradition. Tim played in his second game of the “tochito” (flag football) tournament today during recess and his team won again with Tim catching the first touchdown.  The games are really popular among the students at La Salle and nearly everyone, including the teachers, comes to them to cheer for their respective teams.  They are a good way to connect with our Mexican classmates and they are inter
