Hello everyone!  My name is Emily, and I am from New Hampshire.  I am eighteen years old.  I am a day student, and I have been at Phillips Exeter Academy for four years.  Ever since my freshman year, I have wanted to do the Cuernavaca program.  What an excellent opportunity it is to live in Mexico with a family and to attend a Spanish-speaking school for two months!  I feel lucky to be here with a great group of PEA students!  I have been on the PEAL board for three years and also, for two years, I have been a co-head of Penpal Exchange, an ESSO group that writes letters to local children.  During the spring term, I am very excited to be co-captain of the Girls Varsity tennis team.  My favorite classes are Spanish and Science,. We are very excited to make this web-page to share our experiences with our friends, family, and the Exeter community.

¡Hola todos!  Me llamo Emilia, y soy de New Hampshire.  Yo tengo dieciocho años.  Soy estudiante externa y yo he estado en la Academia de Phillips Exeter por cuatro años. Desde mi primer año en Exeter, yo quise hacer el programa de Cuernavaca. ¡Qué buena oportunidad es vivir en México con una familia y asistir a una escuela en español por dos meses! ¡Yo me siento afortunada de estar aquí con un gran grupo de estudiantes de PEA! He estado en un grupo llamado PEAL por tres años y también, durante dos años, yo he sido un líder de Penpal Exchange, un grupo de ESSO que escribe cartas a niños que viven en la zona. Durante el trimestre de la primavera, yo estoy muy ilusionada por ser un co-capitana del equipo de tenis femenino.  Mis clases favoritas son español y ciencias. Estamos muy  ilusionados de crear este sitio en la red para compartir nuestras experiencias con nuestros amigos, familias y la comunidad de Exeter.

 My name is Greg and I am in my fourth year at Phillips Exeter Academy.  When I’m not at school in New Hampshire, I live in Staten Island, New York with my father, mother, older sister, and niece.  I arrived at Exeter in part through Prep for Prep, a program in New York City that identifies and prepares students of color with academic and leadership potential for the challenges of boarding school. As I really like traveling abroad, I try to take advantage of every opportunity to go outside of the United States.  Since my parents are from Jamaica, I visit the island pretty often during the summer.  In the past, I have also traveled to Australia, Guatemala, and Costa Rica.  I decided to participate in this program in Cuernavaca because I love to study and learn foreign languages, especially Spanish.  After becoming completely proficient in Spanish, I hope that one day I will be able to speak Chinese and French fluently. I hope these next two months will be filled with interesting and unforgettable experiences.

Me llamo Gregorio y estoy en mi cuarto año en la Academia de Phillips Exeter.  Cuando no estoy en New Hampshire, vivo en la ciudad de Staten Island en el estado de Nueva York con mi papá, mamá, hermana mayor y mi sobrina.  Llegué a asistir a Exeter en parte a través de Prep for Prep, una programa de Nueva York que identifica y prepara a estudiantes de color con potencial académico y de liderazgo para los desafíos de un internado.  A mí me gusta mucho viajar al extranjero y, por eso, me aprovecho de cada oportunidad yo tengo que salir de los Estados Unidos.  Como mis padres son de Jamaica, visito el país con frecuencia durante los veranos.  También he viajado a Australia, Guatemala y Costa Rica.  Decidí participar en este programa en Cuernavaca porque me encanta estudiar y aprender las lenguas extranjeras, especialmente el español.  Después de aprender español completamente, espero que algún día pueda hablar el chino y el francés con fluidez. Espero que estos dos meses estén llenos de experiencias interesantes e inolvidables.
 

My name is Leah, and I am from Little Rock, Arkansas.  I came to Phillips Exeter Academy as a new lower.  At that point I had taken almost three years of Spanish classes. When I first heard about Term Abroad in Cuernavaca during my Lower Spring, I was instantly fascinated.  In fact, I distinctly remember calling my mother right after and saying, “I HAVE TO GO, MOM!”  Her response was, of course, to wait and see how I felt when the time came.  I never gave up on my intention to go to Cuernavaca, and when I was accepted, I was absolutely ecstatic.  Now, having been in Cuernavaca for only two days, I can say with confidence that my experience here will be well worth the wait!

Me llamo Leah y soy de Little Rock, Arkansas.  Vine a Phillips Exeter Academy como estudiante de segundo curso.  Durante este tiempo, yo había tomado tres años de clases de español.  Cuando escuché por  primera vez sobre el trimestre en Cuernavaca, yo estuve fascinada instantáneamente.  Yo recuerdo llamar a mi mamá por teléfono y decir, “¡TENGO QUE IR, MAMÁ!”  Su repuesta fue, por supuesto, que yo necesitaba esperar y ver cómo me sentiría en el momento apropiado.  Yo nunca me rendí en mi intención de ir a Cuernavaca, y cuando fui aceptada en el programa, estuve absolutamente emocionada. Ahora, después de solamente dos días en Cuernavaca, puedo decir con confianza que mi experiencia aquí estará el valor la espera.

My name is Hannah and I’m eighteen years old. I live in Amesbury, Massachusetts, about an hour from Boston.  When I attend Exeter, I live at home with my family.  I am one of four children, and I have an older brother and sister and a younger brother.  At home, I love to spend time with friends and family.  My older siblings no longer live at home, but the entire family spends time together once a week, and I always look forward to it.  When I’m at Exeter, I love to row and to go to the gym.  I love to learn languages and I’m really excited for these next two months here in Cuernavaca.

Me llamo Hannah y tengo dieciocho años.  Vivo en Amesbury, Massachusetts y mi casa está cerca de Boston.  Cuando asisto a Exeter, vivo en Amesbury con mi familia.  Tengo tres hermanos, un hermano y una hermana mayores y un hermano menor.  Me gusta mucho pasar tiempo con mi familia y mis amigos.  Mis hermanos mayores ya no viven en  casa pero una vez cada semana pasamos tiempo juntos y es mi día favorito.  En Exeter, me gusta mucho remar e ir al gimnasio.  Me encanta aprender idiomas y estoy muy emocionada de poder vivir aquí en Cuernavaca por dos meses.

My name is Andreina. Although I am an only child, I have always wished I had siblings. When I got to Exeter my dream came true. I acquired 45 sisters in the girls of Bancroft Hall. I love having people around me to talk to and to learn from. That is probably why I chose to apply for the Cuernavaca program. My love for languages and appreciation for other cultures came at a young age. Living in New York and with parents as adventurous as mine you become accustomed to trying different foods, sampling bits and pieces of different languages, and of course listening to all different types of music. So it seems obvious that I would be very interested in constantly broadening my knowledge of the world by traveling.  I am sure I will enjoy and learn from this unique experience.

Me llamo Andreina. Aunque soy hija única, siempre quise tener hermanos. Cuando llegué a Exeter, mi sueño se cumplió. Encontré a 45 hermanas en las chicas de Bancroft Hall. Me encanta tener gente a mi alrededor para aprender y charlar.  Quizá por eso elegí presentarme al programa de Cuernavaca. Tengo pasión por los idiomas y otras culturas desde cuando tenia pocos años. Viviendo en la ciudad de Nueva York con mis padres aventureros me acostumbré a probar comidas nuevas, oír pedacitos de otros idiomas, y por supuesto a escuchar diferentes tipos de música. Pues es obvio que tendría interés en viajar alrededor del mundo. Estoy segura que voy a disfrutar y aprender mucho.

My name is Katrina and I live in Hollis, New Hampshire with my parents and my younger sister. I like music and sports like soccer and rowing, but I also really enjoy languages. I never thought that I would have the opportunity to travel and study in Mexico during my last year in high school, but when I learned about the program, I began to think about this. Finally, I decided that Mexico would be the perfect place to become fluent in Spanish and when I thought more, I realized that it was a great opportunity to meet people that had a culture and lifestyle different from my own. My parents have been very supportive of my decision because they understand that it is important to me because I am also interested in a career in international relations. I hope that this trip gives me both academic and personal experiences!

Me llamo Katrina y vivo en Hollis, Nueva Hampshire con mis padres y mi hermana menor. Me gusta la música y los deportes como el fútbol y remar, pero también me gustan mucho los idiomas. Yo nunca pensé que tendría la oportunidad de viajar y estudiar en México durante mi último año de preparatoria, pero cuando aprendí sobre el programa, yo empecé a pensar sobre esto. Finalmente, yo decidí que México sería el lugar perfecto para hablar español con fluidez y cuando pensé más, me di cuenta de que es una buena oportunidad de conocer personas con una cultura y vida diferente a la mía. Mis padres han sido un gran a poyo de mi decisión porque ellos entienden que es muy importa para mí y es muy bueno porque estoy interesada en un trabajo en relaciones internacionales. ¡Espero que este viaje me dé experiencias tanto académicas como personales!

My name is Conrad and I am seventeen. I live in Boston, Massachusetts and my dormitory at Exeter is Webster South. I am a four year senior. I play water polo and lacrosse for Exeter, and I also play tennis in the summer. I am an only child. When I was little I lived near Boston in Concord and Newton. I have always had cats and now I have a dog as well. I have been studying Spanish for six years. I like the humanities and some sciences. I hope to study economics and marine science in college.

Me llamo Conrad y tengo diecisiete años. Vivo en Boston, Massachusetts y mi residencia de Exeter es Webster del Sur. Asistí a Exeter cuatro años; estoy en mi año final. Juego al waterpolo y al lacrosse para Exeter. También juego al tenis en el verano. No tengo hermanos ni hermanas. Cuando era niño vivía cerca de Boston en Concord y Newton. Siempre tenía gatos y ahora tengo un perro también. Estudie español seis años. Me gustan las clases de humanidades y algunas ciencias. Espero estudiar economía y las ciencias marinas en la universidad.
 

I am Mikayla, though my nickname is Kayla.  I am so excited to be on this trip to Cuernavaca, Mexico!  I am a four-year day student, so this trip will be the longest I have been away from home.  I cannot wait to start school with my Mexican sister, Vanessa.  Even though I will miss my friends and family at Exeter very much, I am thankful I was given this opportunity and I just can’t wait to experience everything. When I am at home, I love to dance.  I dance at Phillips Exeter as well as at an independent studio after school.  I also love skiing, though with Saturday classes at PEA I don’t have much time to take trips to the mountains.  I also love to read, and my favorite book is Memoirs of a Geisha.  I have only been here for two days and I already feel like I have another family!

Me llamo Mikayla, aunque mi apodo es Kayla.  ¡Estoy muy emocionada de haber viajado a Cuernavaca, México!  Soy una estudiante externa de cuatro años en Phillips Exeter así que este viaje es el más largo de mi vida.  No puedo esperar para empezar la escuela con mi hermana mexicana, Vanessa, la semana próxima.  Aunque echaré mucho de menos a mis amigos y mi familia durante este viaje, estoy agradecida de ha ver recibido esta oportunidad y no puedo esperar experimentar todo. Cuando estoy en Exeter, me gusta mucho bailar.  Bailo en Phillips Exeter y en un estudio independiente después de las clases.  También me encanta esquiar, pero con clases en sábado en PEA, no tengo bastante tiempo para ir a las montanas.  También me gusta leer, y mi libro favorito es Memorias de una geisha.  ¡Llevo aquí a solamente dos días y ya siento que tengo otra familia!
 

My name is Kevin, and I am a day student who lives in North Hampton, New Hampshire. I have attended Exeter for the past four years. In México, I live with my Mexican brother, Nicolás, and my parents, Roberto and Constanza. I began studying Spanish when I was eleven years old. At Exeter, I began my Spanish career in the introductory level and I have taken Spanish for four years. My favorite part of Spanish has been the books that I have read in Spanish literature class, like Crónica de una muerte anunciada and El Carnaval. Since Spanish 210 with Sra. Flores, I have wanted to go to Mexico to live in the Mexican culture and intensely practice my Spanish. This program is the first time I have lived in a foreign country. In Exeter, when I am not doing my Spanish homework, I am a member of the Exonian, PEAL, RELEASE and Student Council.

Me llamo Kevin y soy un estudiante externo de North Hampton, Nueva Hampshire. Yo he asistido a Exeter cuatro años. En México, vivo con mi hermano mexicano, Nicolás, y mis padres, Roberto y Constanza. Empecé a estudiar español cuando tenía once años. En Exeter, comencé mi carrera de español en el nivel introductorio y he tomado español cuatro años. Mi parte favorita de las clases de español fueron los libros que leí en las clases de literatura, como Crónica de una muerte anunciada y El Carnaval. Desde mi clase de Español 210 con la Sra. Flores, he querido ir a México para vivir en la cultura mexicana y practicar intensivamente mi español. Este programa es la primera vez que yo he vivido en un país extranjero. En Exeter, cuando no estoy haciendo mi tarea de la clase de español, soy un miembro de  Exonian, PEAL, RELEASE y Student Council. 
 
I am Alice and I am from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.  I am 18 years old and I have seven brothers and sisters, six dogs and seven cats.  I am a four year senior at Phillips Exeter Academy where I live in Bancroft Hall.  In Cuernavaca I have two sisters, Gabby and Claudia, a mother and a father, who loves the Pittsburgh Steelers much like my own.  I love Thai food, animals, and going to the beach.  Hockey is my favorite sport both to play and to watch, and my favorite team is obviously the Pittsburgh Penguins.  I am a certified advanced open water scuba diver with a specialty in night diving and coral awareness, and I hope to one day become a marine biologist.

Me llamo Alice y soy de Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.  Tengo dieciocho años y tengo siete hermanos y hermanas, seis perros y siete gatos.  Yo estoy en mi cuarto año a Phillips Exeter Academy donde vivo en Bancroft Hall.  En Cuernavaca tengo dos hermanas, Gabby y Claudia, una madre y un padre que ama los Pittsburg Steelers tanto como mi padre real. Me gusta la comida tailandesa, los animales e ir a la playa.  El hockey es mi deporte favorito tanto para jugar como para verlo, y mi equipo favorito obviamente son "los pingüinos de Pittsburg".  Tengo un certificado avanzado de buceo en mar abierto, con especialización en buceo nocturno y corales, y espero convertirme algún día en bióloga marina.  
 
My name is Safia. I am eighteen years old and I live in Washington, DC. I have lived there for twelve years in total, but when I was four I spent some time in Sana’a, Yemen for four years. The experience was interesting and exciting, and it gave me an appreciation for other cultures. After four years in Yemen I returned to the United States. I attended Washington International School for seven years. After tenth grade I moved to Phillips Exeter Academy. I have been studying Spanish for many years, but I have never had any experience in a Spanish-speaking country. This program in Cuernavaca, Mexico, is an invaluable opportunity. I am living with Mayra Cerón. She has a very kind and caring family, and I am excited for the next two months here.

Soy Safia. Tengo dieciocho años y soy de Washington, DC. Yo he vivido allí por doce años en total, pero cuando tenía cuatro años yo viví en Sana’a, Yemen, durante cuatro años. La experiencia fuemuy interesante y divertida, y me dió una apreciación de otras culturas. Después de cuatro años en Yemen yo regresé a los Estados Unidos. En Washington, DC yo fui a Washington International School siete años, pero después del décimo grado yo fui a Phillips Exeter Academy. Yo he estudiado el español en la escuela por muchos años pero nunca he tenido ninguna experiencia en un país hispanohablante. Este programa en Cuernavaca, México, es una oportunidad muy valiosa. Estoy viviendo con Mayra Cerón y su familia. Ella tiene una familia muy cariñosa y simpática, y estoy entusiasmada de estar aquí durante los próximos dos meses.

 

My name is Rebecca and I am from North Hampton, New Hampshire. I am eighteen years old and in my last year at Exeter. I have two sisters, one older and one younger, and a dog named Lexi. Here in Cuernavaca, I live with the Mercadillo Huescas - my parents, my brother Arturo, my sister Mariana and two dogs, Tyra and Camela. I like to row, ski and travel. My favorite class is English because I like to read and write. I am very excited to live in Mexico for two months.

Me llamo Rebecca y soy de North Hampton, Nueva Hampshire. Tengo dieciocho annos y estoy en mi ano final de Exeter. Tengo dos hermanas, una mayor y una menor, y un perro que se llama Lexi. Aquiíen Cuernavaca, vivo con la familia Mercadillo Huesca - mis padres, mi hermano Arturo, mi hermana Mariana y dos perros, Tyra y Camela. Me gusta remar, esquiar y viajar. Mi clase favorita es ingles porque me gusta leer y escribir. Estoy   muy emocionada para vivir en Mexico por dos meses.

 

Hi! My name is Ashley. I am here in Cuernavaca where it is always warm. I live with the Villaseñor Thomas family and I have an older sister named Samantha and a sister named Thabata. She is seventeen years old, just like me, but I am going to turn eighteen years old on January 30th. I also have a younger brother named Max. My real family, that is Epping, New Hampshire, consists of my mom, my dad, my older sister named Michelle, my older brother named Mark, and my twin brother named Aaron. He is one minute younger than me. Epping is much smaller than Cuernavaca, but I like living in the city as much as I like living in a small town. I am very laid-back. I am athletic and I really like to play soccer and I like to run. My favorite classes are Spanish (obviously!), biology, and biochemistry (all science classes). Eventually, I want to be a doctor. ¡Hola! Me llamo Ashley. Estoy aquí en Cuernavaca donde hace calor siempre. Vivo con la familia Villaseñor Thomas y tengo una hermana mayor que se llama Samantha y una hermana que se llama Thabata. Ella tiene diecisiete años, como yo, pero voy a cumplir los dieciocho el día treinta de enero. También, tengo un hermano menor que se llama Max. Mi familia real que está en Epping, Nueva Hampshire consiste de mi madre, mi padre, mi hermana mayor que se llama Michelle, mi hermano mayor que se llama Mark, y mi gemelo que se llama Aaron. Él es un minuto menor que yo. Epping es mucho más pequeño de Cuernavaca pero me gusta mucho vivir en una ciudad tanto como en un pueblo. Soy muy relajada. Soy atlética y me gusta al futbol mucho y me gusta correr. Mis clases favoritas son español (¡obviamente!), biología y bioquímica (todas las clases de ciencias). Eventualmente quiero ser una médica. ¡Adiós por ahora… besitos!

 My name is Timothy and I am from Exeter, New Hampshire.  I have two older brothers, Nicholas and Davis, and here in Cuernavaca I also have two brothers, one named Claudio and the other, Jorge.  I am eighteen years old and I am a four year senior at Phillips Exeter Academy where my mom teaches English.  My Mexican mom also works at a school (La Salle).  My dad is a crew coach and my Mexican dad is a lawyer.  In school I like to study history, government and international relations.  In my free time I like to dance, play soccer, ski, play the African drum (called the “djembe”) and row.  I decided to come to Mexico to learn Spanish, but more importantly to understand a foreign people and culture.  My goal for this program is to become bilingual and will know well the city and the people that live here. 

Me llamo Timoteo y soy de Exeter, Nueva Hampshire.  Tengo dos hermanos mayores, Nicholas y Davis y aquí en Cuernavaca también tengo dos hermanos, uno se llama Claudio y el otro Jorge.  Tengo dieciocho años y soy un “senior” de cuatro años en Phillips Exeter Academy donde mi madre enseña literatura inglesa.  Mi madre Mexicana también trabaja en la escuela (La Salle).   Mi padre real es un instructor de remo y mi padre Mexicano es abogado.  En la escuela me gusta estudiar la historia, el gobierno y las relaciones internacionales.  En mis ratos libres me gusta bailar, jugar al fútbol, esquiar, tocar el tambor africano (se llama el “djembe”) y remar.  Decidí venir a México para aprender el español pero más, para conocer un pueblo y una cultura extranjera.  Mi meta en este programa es llegar a ser bilingüe y conocer bien la ciudad y las gentes que viven aquí.

Hello, my name is Mohini. I am sixteen years old and I am senior at Phillips Exeter Academy but I live in Ames, Iowa. I love to dance and at school I am a member of Shakti, ABS, and Precision. I want to learn to dance salsa here in Mexico. I like to study languages. I have studied Spanish for four year and I took one French class. I am also interested in Mexican culture and I hope that after these two months I will be able to speak Spanish easily. In this first week, I have learned a lot and I think my time here will be fun and unforgettable.
