The fourteen students of the Exeter in Cuernavaca program 2009, the director of the program, and his family describe themselves as follows.

SOPHIA ANTENEH

Hello! I am Sophia. I am from Boston, MA, and I am 18 years old. I started at Exeter as a second year student and when I heard about the Cuernavaca program, I knew I had to apply. My parents are from Ethiopia, and since I was a child I have been accustomed to hear other languages. Because of that, I have a great appreciation for languages and also for other cultures. When I go to college, I want to study international relations and work in an non-profit organization. Because of that, I want to speak Spanish fluently in order to be able to work in South America. 

¡Hola! Soy Sophia. Soy de Boston, MA, y tengo dieciocho años . Llegué a Exeter como estudiante de segundo curso, y cuando oí sobre el programa de Cuernavaca, supe que tenía que solicitarlo. Mis padres son de Etiopía, y entonces desde la niñez he estado acostumbrada a oír otras lenguas. Por eso, tengo una gran apreciación por idiomas y también por otras culturas. Cuando vaya a la universidad, quiero estudiar relaciones internacionales y trabajar en una organización sin ánimo de lucro. Por eso quiero hablar fluidamente el español para poder trabajar en Suramérica.

 

ILANA CLIFT

My name is Ilana, and I am eighteen years old. I am a day student, living with my parents in Amesbury, Massachusetts. At school I sing in the Concert Choir, Glee Club, and PEADS, Exeter's co-ed acapella group. As a four-year senior at Exeter, I really think it is important to take advantage of any opportunity to step outside of the Exeter community and experience something new. I started studying Spanish when I was eleven, and I have loved the language ever since. This program is the perfect opportunity to immerse ourselves in another culture. Living with a family forces us to speak Spanish all day, every day, which is the best way to learn. I am so excited to be embarked on this adventure in Cuernavaca!

Me llamo Ilana y tengo dieciocho años. Soy una estudiante externa y vivo con mis padres en Amesbury, Massachusetts. En la escuela, yo canto en el “Concert Choir,” “Glee Club,” y PEADS, un grupo de canto “acapella.” Como estudiante de cuatro años, pienso que es muy importante usar cada oportunidad de salir de la comunidad de Exeter y experimentar algo nuevo. Empecé mis estudios de español cuando tenía once años, y me encantó al instante. Éste programa es la oportunidad perfecta para sumergirnos en otra cultura. Vivir con una familia nos fuerza a hablar español todo el día, cada día, lo cual es la mejor manera de aprender. ¡Estoy tan emocionada de estar embarcada en esta aventura en Cuernavaca!

STIRLING HEDDERICH

My name is Stirling Hedderich and I am in my fourth year at Phillips Exeter Academy.  My home away from school is in Walton, Nebraska with my father, mother, older brother, and younger sister.  At Exeter I spend my free time with friends, playing on the tennis team in the spring, and volunteering for certain ESSO programs.  Here in Mexico I live with my host brother, 17, my host sister, 11, and both my host parents.  Traveling abroad has always been a pleasure of mine but I had never lived in a foreign country, which made my decision to enroll in the Cuernavaca program much more enticing.  My goal over these next two months is to come as close as I can to speaking fluent Spanish and to have a greater understanding of Mexico´s culture and people.

Me llamo Stirling y estoy en mi cuarto año en la Academia de Phillips Exeter.  Fuera de la escuela, vivo en Walton, Nebraska, con my papá, mamá, hermano mayor, y mi hermana menor.  Me gusta pasar el tiempo libre en Exeter hablando con mis amigos, practicando tenis para el equipo de la escuela, y participando en unos programas de servicio social de ESSO.  Aquí en México estoy viviendo con la familia que me está hospedando.  Tengo un hermano, una hermana, y dos padres.  Viajar a otros países siempre ha sido siempre uno de mis mayores placeres, pero nunca he vivido en otro país, lo cual ha hecho mucho más seductor el programa de Cuernavaca. Mi objetivo durante estos dos meses es hablar español lo más fluidamente posible y adquirir un mayor entendimiento de la cultura  y la gente de México.

MORGAN KELLY

Hello, my name is Morgan Kelly – I am eighteen years old and I am from San Francisco, California. For the past three and a half years I have attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. I really enjoy going to school at Exeter and I am going to miss it very much when I graduate in the spring of 2009. My favorite subjects at school are: Art, Science, and of course Spanish. I also enjoy participating in different sports – especially Cross Country and Track and Field. I love to run and when I am home I run almost every morning. At my home in San Francisco I have two pets: one dog and one cat. I also have a very loving and beautiful family of four. My father’s name is Tim  – he has his own software company and works from home. My mother’s name is Cynthia and she works at a public hospital in San Francisco. I have one older brother who is twenty-one and attends college as well as works at a gym.

Hola, mi nombre es Morgan Kelly – tengo dieciocho años y soy de San Francisco, California. Asisto a Phillips Exeter Academy en Nueva Hampshire desde hace tres años y medio. Disfruto mucho de ser un estudiante de Exeter y voy a extrañar la escuela muchísimo cuando me gradúe en la primavera de 2009. Mis asignaturas favoritas en la escuela son: Arte, Ciencia, y por supuesto Español. También disfruto de participar en deportes diferentes – especialmente carrera de campo a través y atletismo. Me encanta correr y cuando estoy en casa corro casi cada mañana. En mi hogar en San Francisco yo tengo dos mascotas – una perra y una gata. También tengo una familia muy amable, unida, y hermosa de cuatro. Mi padre se llama Tim – él tiene su propia compañía de “software” y trabaja desde el hogar. Mi madre se llama Cynthia y ella trabaja en un hospital público en San Francisco. Tengo un hermano mayor que tiene veintiún años y asiste a una universidad y también trabaja en un gimnasio.

JI HYUK LIM

My name is Ji Hyuk Lim, and I am eighteen years old.  I live in Allendale, New Jersey with my parents, and at school, I reside in Webster North.  I have also lived in Seoul, South Korea and in Moscow, Russia.  I have been a student at Exeter for four years.  Outside of classes, I am involved with Model United Nations, Exeter Political Review, and the quiz bowl team, and I serve as an e-proctor.  I also play the violin in the orchestra, and I was a member of the varsity football team this year.  I am very interested in foreign languages and cultures, and in Cuernavaca, I hope to learn more about Mexico’s history and culture and improve my command of the Spanish language, which I have been studying for six years.  I am excited to go to school in Mexico this winter with my host brother Luis Fernando.  I hope that the next two months will be a great experience.

Me llamo Ji Hyuk Lim, y tengo dieciocho años.  Vivo en Allendale en Nueva Jersey con mis padres, y en la escuela vivo en la residencia Webster North.  También he vivido en Seúl, en Corea del Sur, y en Moscú, en Rusia.  He sido un estudiante de Exeter por cuatro años.  Fuera de las clases, participo en los modelos de la ONU, en Exeter Political Review y en el equipo de concursos, y sirvo como un e-proctor (consejero sobre medio ambiente).  También toco el violín en la orquesta y he sido un miembro del equipo de fútbol americano este año.  Me interesan mucho las lenguas y las culturas extranjeras, y en Cuernavaca espero aprender más sobre la historia y la cultura de México y mejorar mi dominio de la lengua española, que he estudiado por seis años.  Estoy muy emocionado de ir a la escuela en México este invierno con mi hermano anfitrión Luis Fernando.  Espero que los dos meses próximos sean una experiencia estupenda.

 

JON MILLSTEIN

My name is Jon, and I am a four year day-student from Stratham, New Hampshire. The trip to Cuernavaca will be the longest time I have been away from home, but I am very excited to get to know my Mexican family and fellow students at La Salle. Although I initially struggled in Spanish classes at Exeter, it has become one of my favorite subjects, and I hope that after returning from Cuernavaca I will be able to speak Spanish with a degree of fluency. At home in Stratham, my favorite thing to do is skateboard. I have skateboarded since I was in 6th grade, and last summer I worked at the local skateboard shop and skate park. I also love to laugh, and for the past year I was the Humor Editor of our school's newspaper. I can't wait to get to Cuernavaca!

Me llamo Juan, y soy un estudiante externo de Stratham, Nueva Hampshire, desde hace cuatro años. El viaje a Cuernavaca va a ser el más largo de mi vida, pero estoy muy emocionado por conocer a mi familia mexicana y mis compañeros estudiantes. Aunque yo inicialmente tenía dificultad con mis clases de español en Exeter, el español se ha convertido en una de mis asignturass favoritas, y ojalá que después de que regrese de Cuernavaca yo pueda hablar en español con un nivel mayor de fluidez. En mi casa en Stratham, mi cosa favorita para hacer es ir en mi monopatín. He ido en monopatín desde que yo estaba en sexto grado, y en el verano pasado yo trabajé en la tienda local de monopatines y el parque de monopatín. A mí también me encanta reírme, y el año pasado yo fui el editor de humor para el periódico de nuestra escuela. ¡No puedo esperar a llegar a Cuernavaca!

JEANNETTE MOON

Hi! I'm Jeannette and I'm from Miami. I attend school at Phillips Exeter Academy which is a boarding school. In my home in Miami, I live with my mother and my father. My parents are originally from Korea. I have a brother who is twenty-one years old. He is studying in Korea. I love being here in Cuernavaca. I live with my 'sister.' Her name is Martha. There are four daughters in the family but only Martha and I live in the house with our 'dad' and the dog, Frida. Another sister, Mildred, comes to eat with us every day. The other two live in Los Cabos and Puebla. Mildred has a daughter whos name is Mildred as well. We all get along very well. I love my mother. She lives in Puebla to work for half the week. She cooks amazing Mexican food and is very nice. She is always inviting my friends to our house to eat. I am very excited to live here and attend La Salle.

¡Hola! Soy Jeannette y soy de Miami. Voy a Phillips Exeter Academy, una escuela de internado. En mi casa de Miami vivo con mi mamá y mi papá. Mis padres son de Corea. Tengo un hermano que tiene veintiún años. El está estudiando en Corea. Me encanta estar en Cuernavaca. Vivo con una 'hermana.' Se llama Martha. Hay cuatro hijas en la familia pero solo Martha y yo vivimos en la casa con nuestro 'papá' y la perra, Frida. Una hermana, que se llama Mildred viene todos los días para comer. Las otras viven en Los Cabos y Puebla. Mildred tiene una hija que se llama Mildred también. Todos nosotros nos llevamos muy bien. Me encanta mi mamá. Ella vive en Puebla para trabajar durante la mitad de la semana. Ella cocina comida mexicana riquísimamente y es muy amable. Siempre está invitando a mis amigas para comer en la casa. Estoy emocionada por vivir con mi familia e ir a la Salle.

 

ELARA MOSQUERA

Hello! My name is Elara, and I am from North Hampton, New Hampshire. I am seventeen years old. I am a day student and I live with my parents, my dog Esko, and my cat Olso. I have been a student at Phillips Exeter Academy for four years. During my first year at Exeter, I heard about the Cuernavaca program. I wasn't sure that first year if I would like to go, but after I heard from the experiences of the students who went last year, I new it was a great opportunity to live in Mexico with a family. I feel very fortunate to be here! When I am in New Hampshire, I play a lot of field hockey. I love to play hockey. There is not field hockey team here, and that's why I am constantly walking to the gym near my house. When I am out in the city of Cuernavaca, I always like to have cookies and cream ice cream. It's incredible here!

¡Hola! Me Llamo Elara, y soy de North Hampton, New Hampshire. Tengo Diecisiete años. Soy una estudiante externa y vivo con mis padres, mi perro Esko, y mi gato Olso. Yo he estado en la Academia de Phillips Exeter por cuatro años. Durante mi primer año de estar en Exeter, oí del programa de Cuernavaca. Yo no estaba segura ese primer año de si yo querría ir, pero después de oír las  experiencias de los estudiantes que fueron el año pasado, sabía que era una gran oportunidad de vivir en México con una familia. ¡Me siento muy afortunada de estar aquí! Cuando estoy en New Hampshire, yo siempre estoy jugando al hockey sobre hierba. Me encanta jugar al hockey. No hay un equipo de hockey sobre hierba aquí, y por eso yo siempre estoy caminando al gimnasio cerca de mi casa. Cuando estoy afuera en la ciudad de Cuernavaca, siempre me gusta  tomar helado con sabor de “galletas y crema”.

CASSIE MOULTON

Hello, my name is Cassie Moulton and I have been at Phillips Exeter Academy for four years.  I am a day student and I live in Rye, New Hampshire, only fifteen minutes from Exeter.  I have been taking Spanish classes for seven years.  In the summer of 2006, I went to northern Spain for five weeks with the Phillips Exeter Summer Program and lived with a family and studied Spanish.  My desire to learn this language started that summer in Spain.  My older, Rachel, attended the Cuernavaca program in 2007 and had one of the greatest experiences of her life.  As an upper at Exeter, I had seen three different groups of students go to Cuernavaca and I heard only good things about this trip.  Living with a different family with a different language and a new culture is a big change for all of the Exeter students, but I am so excited for this opportunity to learn about so many new things!

Hola, me llamo Cassie Moulton y yo he estado en Phillips Exeter Academy por cuatro años. Soy una estudiante externa y vivo en Rye, Nueva Hampshire, sólo a quince minutos de Exeter. He estado tomando cursos de españolas por siete años. En el verano de 2006, fui al norte de España por cinco semanas con el Programa de Verano de Phillips Exeter y viví con una familia y estudié español. Mi deseo por aprender este idioma empezó ese verano en España. Mi hermana mayor, Rachel, atendió el programa de Cuernavaca en 2007 y tuvo uno de las mejores experiencias de su vida. Cuando yo tenía tres años en Exeter, yo había visto tres grupos diferentes de estudiantes que fueron a Cuernavaca y oí sólo buenas cosas acerca de este viaje. ¡La vida con una familia diferente con un idioma diferente y una nueva cultura es un cambio grande para todos los estudiantes de Exeter, pero yo estoy emocionada por esta oportunidad para aprender sobre nuevas cosas!

 

HANNAH NOONEY

My name is Hannah and I am from Kittery, Maine. I am 17 years old and have atended Exeter for the past four years. When at Exeter I live in Dunbar Hall. At home I am an only child but also have a Golden Retriever named Tessa and two cats named Spook and Crystal. I like to read, spend time with friends, ski, and listen to music. In Cuernavaca, I live with my Mexican sister, Martha, and my parents, Juan and Martha. I have wanted to go to Cuernavaca since my prep year at Exeter. I am so excited to be here improving my Spanish and learning about Mexican culture. In college I plan to study Internacional Relations, so understanding different cultures is important and interesting to me. I love any type of traveling, which makes this trip even more exciting for me. Although I miss my friends at Exeter, I am really enjoying meeting so many new people. Everything has been great so far and I already wish we could stay in Cuernavaca longer!

Estoy tan emocionada de estar aquí mejorando mi español y aprendiendo más de la cultura mexicana. En la universidad yo planeo estudiar Relaciones Internacionales. Por eso, estudiar las culturas diferentes es importante e interesante para mí. Me encanta cualquier tipo de viajes, lo que hace este viaje aún más emocionante para mí. Aunque extraño a mis amigos en Exeter, yo disfruto realmente conociendo a nuevas personas. ¡Todo ha sido increíble hasta ahora y ya deseo que podamos quedarnos en Cuernavaca más tiempo! TYLER PAGE

My name is Tyler and I am eighteen. I live in San Francisco, California and my dormitory at Exeter is Cilley Hall. I am a four year senior and I play lacrosse for Exeter. I also like and play almost any other sport but not competitively for Exeter. I have a twin brother, Cole, who also goes to Exeter and also a little brother, Alec, who is in high school at home. I have always had dogs and right now I have a Dalmatian named Paris. I have been studying Spanish for six years. My favorite subject is math and I hope to study economics in college.

Me llamo Tyler y tengo dieciocho años. Vivo en San Francisco, California y mi dormitorio en Exeter es Cilley Hall. Soy un senior de cuatro años y juego al lacrosse para Exeter. También me gusta y juego a todos los otros deportes pero no de forma competitiva para Exeter. Tengo un gemelo, se llama Cole, que también va a Exeter y también un pequeño hermano, Alec, que está en la preparatoria en San Francisco. Siempre he tenido perros y ahora tengo un dálmata que se llama París. He estado estudiando español por seis años. Mi asignatura preferida es matemáticas y espero estudiar economía en la universidad.

 

JUSTIN RAMOS

Hello! My name is Justin Ramos and I am seventeen years old. I am from New York City and I like to explore the city and learn new things. This is my third year at Phillips Exeter Academy. I arrived at PEA with the support of Boy's Club of New York. This is a group that helps bright students receive the education they deserve. When I have free time, I like to play sports or hangout with my friends. I love baseball and I started playing when I was four years old. My parents are from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Although my parents are Latinos I still have much to learn about Spanish. That's why I wanted to study in Mexico. It has been a few weeks since I arrived to and I have already learn a lot. This is the first time I am living in another country. I like to travel but I've never had the opportunity to do so. If I could see the world, I would go to places like Dubai or Tahiti. I have studying Spanish for a few years but I want to speak it perfectly. One day I hope to speak Chinese and Arabic fluently too.

¡Hola! Me llamo Justin Ramos y tengo diecisiete años. Soy de Nueva York y me gusta andar dentro la ciudad para aprender nuevas cosas. Esto es mi tercero año en Phillips Exeter Academia. Yo llegué a PEA con el apoyo del Boys’ Club of New York. Este es un grupo que ayuda buenos alumnos de Nueva York y que no tienen las oportunidades de recibir una educación como merecen. Cuando tengo tiempo libre me gusta jugar a los deportes o pasar tiempo con mis amigos. Me encanta el beisbol y empecé a jugar cuando tenía cuatros años. Mis padres son de Puerto Rico y la República Dominicana. Aunque mis papas son latinos todavía tengo cosas que aprender con el español.  Por eso yo quería estudiar en Mexico. Hace algunas semanas desde que llegué a México y ya he aprendido mucho.  Esta es la primera vez que yo estoy viviendo en otro país. Me gusta viajar pero casi nunca tenía la oportunidad. Si pudiera viajar más, iría a lugares lejos como Dubai o Tahiti. He estado estudiando el español para varios años pero quiero hablarlo perfectamente. Ojala que algún día pueda hablar el chino y el árabe con fluidez también.

ELISA ROSOFF

Hello!  My name is Elisa Rosoff and I’m from Durham, NC.  I came to Exeter in 10th grade and I live in Langdell.  This is my sixth year taking Spanish classes. I love to dance, work with ESSO, play piano, cook, go to the beach, listen to music, and have a good time with my friends. I thrive in warm weather so I am especially glad to be escaping the evil New Hampshire winter. I love internacional travel and meeting new people. Every summer I go to  New Brunswick, Canada and I have been fortunate to attend a model-UN program in Guatemala City called HACIA Democracy under Harvard. Last spring break I volunteered at a Honduran orphanage near Tegucigalpa, run by the organization Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos. I feel extremely lucky to be a part of this year’s Cuernavaca experience. I intend to major in Internacional Relations with a focus on Latin American education reform.

¡Hola! Me llamo Elisa Rosoff y soy de Durham, NC. Llegué a Exeter en grado décimo. Este es mi sexto año tomando clases de español. A mi me encanta bailar, trabajar con ESSO, tocar el piano, cocinar, ir a la playa, escuchar música y gozar de tiempo con mis amigos. Se me da mejor el tiempo cálido por lo tanto estoy felicísima de escapar del mal tiempo de los inviernos de Nueva Hampshire. A mí me gustan los viajes internacionales y conocer a personas nuevas. Cada verano voy a Nueva Brunswick, Canadá y he tenido la fortuna de asistir a un programa de modelo-ONU en La Ciudad de Guatemala que se llama HACIA Democracy bajo Harvard. En mis vacaciones de primavera el año pasado, trabajé como voluntaria en un orfanato hondureño cerca de Tegucigalpa, dirigido por la organización Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos. ¡Soy muy afortunada por ser parte de la experiencia de este año en Cuernavaca! Tengo la intención especializarme en  relaciones internacionales con un foco en la reforma de educación en Latinoamérica. 

 

LILY WHITE

Hello everyone, my name is Lily and I have been at Exeter for four yaers. At Exeter, I live in Hoyt Hall and I am from Nantucket, Massachusetts. I have a younger sister and a black lab. At Exeter I enjoy playing sports. I have played soccer, ice hockey, and softball for four years. I also enjoy listening to different types of music. Since I was born and grew up on an island, I love the beach and the ocean and always look forward to summer and warm weather. I like mathematics and some sciences. I am really excited for Cuernavaca and the opportunity to improve my Spanish and learn about a different culture.

Hola todos, me llamo Lily y he estado en la Academia de Phillips Exeter por cuatro años. En Exeter, yo vivo en la residencia Hoyt y soy de Nantucket, Massachusetts. Tengo una hermana más joven y un perro. En Exeter me gusta jugar a los deportes. He jugado al fútbol, el hockey sobre hielo, y el béisbol durante cuatro años. También me gusta escuchar tipos diferentes de música. Desde que nací y crecí en una isla, yo adoro la playa y el océano y siempre espero con ilusión el verano y el tiempo cálido. Me gustan las matemáticas y algunas ciencias. Estoy emocionada realmente por Cuernavaca y la oportunidad de mejorar mi español y aprender acerca de una cultura diferente.

FERMIN PEREZ-ANDREU

Hello, my name is Fermín and I am the director of the Mexico program for the year 2009. I am from southern Spain and it is a pleasure for me to be here in Cuernavaca for the first time with a group of excellent students. Everything is new and exciting for us. Hola, me llamo Fermín y soy el director del programa de México del año 2009. Soy del sur de España y para mí es un placer estar aquí en Cuernavaca por primera vez con un grupo de excelentes estudiantes. Todo es nuevo y emocionante para nosotros. MIGUEL PEREZ-GLASSNER

My name is Miguel. I was born in Baltimore, but I have lived in Exeter for most of my life. Cuernavaca is really warm and fun. I go to school with my sister Paula at Montessori Atala. All my classes are in Spanish, except for English class. That is the easiest one for us. I love getting to visit new places and knowing new things about Mexico.

Me llamo Miguel. Nací en Baltimore, pero he vivido en Exeter la mayor parte de mi vida. Cuernavaca es muy cálida y divertida. Voy a una escuela que se llama Montessori Atala con mi hermana. Todas mis clases son en español, excepto por inglés. Esa es la más fácil para nosotros. Me encanta visitar nuevos lugares y conocer nuevas cosas de México.

PAULA PEREZ-GLASSNER

My name is Paula. I was born in Exeter and lived there all my life. I like being in Cuernavaca because it is fun and the weather is great. I go to school with my brother Miguel at Montessori Atala. There I mostly work on mathematics and I like when we go for recess where I can play with the older kids.

Me llamo Paula. Yo nací en Exeter y he vivido ahí toda mi vida. Me gusta estar en Cuernavaca porque es divertido y el tiempo es fantástico. Voy a una escuela que se llama Montessori Atala con mi hermano Miguel. En la escuela hago mucho trabajo con matemáticas y me gusta mucho la hora del receso porque puedo jugar con los niños y niñas más grandes.

 

ELLEN GLASSNER

My name is Ellen Glassner, and I am thrilled to be in Cuernavaca with the program.  I am here with my husband, Fermin Perez-Andreu, and our two children, Miguel and Paula.  We are enjoying getting to know the people and culture of Mexico, and sharing this adventure with our PEA group!  How lucky we are!

Me llamo Ellen Glassner, y estoy encantada de estar en Cuernavaca con el programa. Estoy aquí con mi marido, Fermín Pérez-Andreu, y nuestros dos hijos, Miguel y Paula. Estamos disfrutando de conocer a la gente y la cultura de Mexico, y de compartir esta aventura con nuestro grupo de PEA! Qué afortunados de estar aquí!
