Music

Music can be a vital part of a student’s development of self-expression and creativity. Whether a student experiences music in the classroom, in the private teaching studio, as a composer, or in an ensemble, active engagement and participation is at the heart of the Music program. The department welcomes students of all levels of skill – those exploring music for the first time as well as accomplished musicians – to participate in the many activities and offerings of the department.

Students may choose from a range of music theory courses from the Introductory to the Advanced Placement level and Music History and Appreciation courses in both classical and popular genres. Private instruction is available in all instruments and voice, in Classical, Jazz, Popular, Folk, and World Music and in Composition. Participation with fellow students in ensemble music-making can be one of the most enriching experiences of school life. Students have opportunities for participation in Glee Club, Concert Choir, Women’s Chorus, Symphony Orchestra, Symphonia, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, Stage Band, Percussion Ensemble, African Drumming and Chamber Music.

Students have many opportunities for public performance—informal “in-house” concerts, student recitals on the Academy Concert Series and concerts by all large ensembles. The department also sponsors an annual concerto competition. Guest artists and distinguished teachers regularly visit the campus to perform and conduct master classes with students.

The music program is housed in the Forrestal-Bowld Music Center that was completed in the fall of 1995. The center includes three large rehearsal halls, 10 teaching studios equipped with grand pianos, a library equipped with electronic pianos and computer workstations, and 20 practice rooms with upright pianos. A new Ruffatti organ and a fine double manual harpsichord are housed in Phillips Church.
