Richard Parris

Richard Parris, math instructor, has recently published two articles in the College Mathematics Journal, published by the Mathematical Association of America.

"A Waiting-Time Surprise" appeared in the January 2008 issue. Here is the article synopsis:

"Consider the sum of n random real numbers, uniformly distributed in the unit interval. Although the expected value of this sum is n/2, the value of n for which this sum first exceeds a given target value t is expected to be more than 2t, by an amount that is asymptotically constant."

"Commensurable Triangles" appeared in the November 2007 issue:

"Everyone knows what makes a 3-4-5 triangle special, but how many know what makes a 4-5-6 triangle special? It is an integer-sided triangle in which one angle is twice another. It is enjoyable to search for these things, but for those who are impatient, this article derives explicit polynomial formulas that generate all of the basic examples of triangles with integer sides and one angle a rational multiple of another."

The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) describes the College Mathematics Journal as "designed to enhance classroom learning and stimulate thinking regarding undergraduate mathematics. It publishes articles, short Classroom Capsules, problems, solutions, media reviews and other pieces. All are aimed at the college mathematics curriculum with emphasis on topics taught in the first two years." Learn more about the publication at the MAA website

Parris is also the author of Peanut Software, a series of shareware math programs used worldwide by educators, students and mathematicians. Check out the Peanut Software website for more information.
