German Students Place First in National Exam

Exeter, NH (February 21, 2007)— For the first time, Phillips Exeter Academy students have earned the top three places in New Hampshire on the National German Exam. Eleven of Exeter’s students ranked above the 90th percentile, and three placed first in the second, third and fourth year exams.

Senior Owen Mays, of Bridgeport, PA, placed first in New Hampshire on the fourth year exam. Upper Elizabeth Folkerts, of Hays, KS, placed first in the state on the third year exam, and prep Danai Kadzere, of Greensboro, NC, placed first in the second year exam.

Taken in January, the National German Exam is an annual language test for high school students given in two-parts. The first is the exam, and the second is a series of essays and interviews. The grand prize is a one-month trip to Germany, offering students the opportunity to attend a German school, live with a local family, and tour the country. Competition interviews will be held next month at Dartmouth College.

According to exam officials, among the 24,000 students who took the test nationally, all of the more than 40 Exeter test takers ranked at or above the 85th percentile.
