My favorite part of class is the journal entry. At the beginning of each class there’s a topic on the board, so you can either write about that or whatever you want for 15 minutes. The last topic was ‘eureka moment.’ Sometimes our teacher Mrs. Moore will have you pick a journal entry and go back and elaborate it into a paper. I really liked writing about my best Thanksgiving memory. I enjoy that part of class because it’s not dictated by anyone but yourself.

Mastering mathematics with a smile. More…

Math is my hardest subject, but I enjoy it a lot. But I’m the type of person who enjoys a challenge. I’ve had Mr. Chen four times, so there’s a respect between us. He’s a funny guy, and he makes math interesting. If I’m not doing well, he’s on my case. There’s no criticism; he just looks at what you did wrong and helps you find the right answer. He always makes me laugh or smile.

12:00 PM: Lunch/Free time -

Food, friends and football. More…

Most of the people I eat with are friends in general, but a lot are on the football team. Here I’m having lunch with Victor (far left), who is on the wrestling the team with me, and Joshua, who lives next door to me. I usually eat lunch, go back to my room, maybe catch up on some studying or take care of things like going to the post office, change into some sweatpants and go to practice.

12:25 PM: Elementary Chinese -

Fine-tuning tones. More…

I chose Chinese because my best friend at Exeter was born in Taiwan. I always wanted to learn a language that was not the normal language to take in high school. It’s not phonetic at all. There are four tones, and with four tones, words like ‘ma’ have so many different meanings. Depending on the tone it could mean mother, horse, a question, or a last name. I actually thought Chinese was going to be hard, but Ms. Fontaine is such a good teacher that it’s easy. She’s very understanding. My favorite part of the class is writing characters and working on pronunciation. It’s so hard to get the tones correct!

1:30 PM: Football -

There’s no ‘I’ in TEAM. More…

I’m a tailback and have played football for four years. Here, I’m with my teammate Andre. He’s a good friend I know through football and a couple other student-run organizations. I played Varsity my junior and senior years, and I actually started in a couple games this year. Last year we had a better athletic team, but this year we did better because we were so connected. That was my favorite part—just a close group, win or lose, getting us through a lot of games. Our commitment to each other and this team was so strong that it helped us do better.

Keeping culture alive. More…

During my free period I will walk through the gallery and see what’s going on. This was the Faculty and Staff Art Show, and I’m actually looking at a picture that was taken by my astronomy teacher Mr. Blackwell. It was of some kind of nebula. There was some work that was done when our teachers were in high school themselves. The quilt I’m looking at was made by my English teacher Mrs. Moore when she was in high school. My favorite was a wizard made out of wood by the school carpenter. The student gallery is in the spring, and it’s very interesting because you get to see pieces from people you know. I had a couple photos outside the art gallery, which was cool. The works range from ceramics, photos, painting, sketches, drawing, quilts… anything.

5:10 PM: Astronomy -

Mars, stars and other galaxies. More…

I take astronomy with my friends Christopher, Gabriel and Bruce. This is my favorite class right now. Mr. Blackwell makes astronomy so interesting. He’s so connected with the youth; he knows all the cool gadgets and video games. He’s very relaxed. We were looking for Mars when there still was light, and I actually saw it. The camera takes about 250 pictures and if you lay them on top of each other they give you a stronger image. We have a lab a week that helps us learn what we’ve been talking and learning about all week, instead of just looking at equations. In the observatory we look at planets; we looked at the Andromeda Galaxy, which is the closest to our own. We look at stars and just check out the sky.

Breaking out the big drums. More…

I like the class because you get to beat on a drum and relieve some stress. I wanted to take a cool and interesting instrument. I like being different. I wish I had started it a few years earlier. My favorite part is when we learn a new rhythm and then put all the rhythms together. We all perform on Martin Luther King Day in the Fisher Theater. There are about 50 drums in there on that day.

This is the second year that the C-Funk radio show has existed. Here, my best friend Kwabena is helping me with the broadcast. Some boys from the dorms started it and asked me to be a part of it. They are a few of my best friends. We basically go in and act silly for an hour on the radio. We usually play hip-hop or music not usually heard in the area. We have something called “The Weekend Review,” where we talk about upcoming events for the weekend and what we think about them. We get a fair amount of listeners; we get a lot of people who call in and talk and act silly with us. We also have guest speakers that come in or call in to talk to us. That’s why people like our show so much, because it’s so interactive.
