Exeter, NH (October 4, 2006)—From Friday, October 20 to Saturday, December 2, the Lamont Gallery at Phillips Exeter Academy will present “A Covenant of Seasons,” an exhibit of monotypes by Joellyn Duesberry and poems by Pattiann Rogers. An opening reception for the artists will be held on Friday, October 27, from 6:30–8:00 p.m. The Lamont Gallery is located in the Frederick R. Mayer Art Center on Tan Lane in Exeter. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Duesberry is an internationally recognized landscape artist who has painted plein-air, or painting from life, for more than 40 years. The current exhibit of monotypes is a collection of landscapes that captures the distinct colors and shapes of the seasons in different regions of the country. Her use of light, shadow, scale and texture culminates in paintings that are both visually and emotionally arresting. Of her works, she says, “I am glad for the tension between my passion for the land and the joy of building a two-dimensional abstraction which will continue to inform my work in the future.” Duesberry began exhibiting in New York City in 1979, and has since had 10 New York solo exhibitions.

Rogers’ poetry accentuates Duesberry’s monotypes. Considered one of America’s finest contemporary poets, Rogers’ works are “densely detailed and thickly textured, describing the natural world and one’s place in it.” In the tradition of Emerson, Whitman and Oliver, her poems are described as wise and complex, reading like a series of deeply felt exploration of the physical world and the presence of the divine.

Rogers has published 11 books of poetry, including Generations (Penguin, 2004); Song of the World Becoming: New and Collected Poems, 1981-2001 (2001); Firekeeper: New and Selected Poems (1994), which was a finalist for the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize; and A Covenant of Seasons (1998), a published partnership of the exhibit. Rogers is the recipient of two NEA grants, a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Lannan Poetry Fellowship. Her work has garnered accolades including the Tietjens Prize and the Hokin Prize from Poetry, the Roethke Prize from Poetry Northwest, the Strousse Award twice from Prairie Schooner, three book awards from the Texas Institute of Letters and four Pushcart Prizes.
