2007 Boys Varsity A Tennis

     We played indoors at Groton. This was a great match to start the season. All of our doubles teams played very well in helping us secure the all important doubles point.  In singles, new upper Mark Coutin got us off to a good start with a decisive win at #1 singles. Lowers James Ying and Sterling Hedderich clinched the match for Exeter with solid wins at #5 and #6.  The three singles matches that we lost were all closely fought. Submitted by Coach Tony Greene

     This was the first time in more than two years that Exeter has swept the doubles. Mark Coutin clinched the match with a very strong performance at #1.  His opponent Josh Roer is a strong player who has been #1 at Loomis for the past three years.  Mark was down a break at 3-5 in the first set when he turned the match around by winning the next 7 games.  Our two seniors Nick and Louis turned in flawless performances, as they only lost 1 game between them. Submitted by Coach Tony Greene

On Saturday, the tennis team traveled to Wallingford CT to play a strong, well-coached Choate team.  The match started with 3 well-played, competitive doubles matches. Unfortunately Choate prevailed in all three.  The first singles match featured some high quality tennis.  Mark Coutin played well, but lost for the first time this year to Ben Gettinger. At #2, Nick Maisel revenged a loss from last year, while continuing his consistent play at the #2 spot.  Sterling Hedderich staged a strong comeback to win his match, after being blanked in the first set. In a contest that started after 5:30, Exeter succumbed to a solid Thayer team.  The match was closer than the 6-1 result suggests.  The two teams started with three closely contested doubles contests.  Frank Yu and Paul Lee got Exeter off to a good start with a decisive win at #3 doubles, and the team of Maisel and Frank played an excellent match but came up just short at #2 doubles.  In singles, Sterling Hedderich won his fourth straight match at #6 to notch what turned out to be Exeter's only point.  The other five matches featured lots of good tennis, but unfortunately they all resuled in victories for Thayer.  Mark Coutin played a  great match at first singles, barely losing in a third set tie-breaker.  His match finished fifteen minutes after the sun had set.  Louis Frank also lost in a third set tie-breaker in a battle that could have gone either way. Exeter got off to a strong start by sweeping the doubles.  At first singles Mark Coutin played a flawless match in dispatching his opponent without the loss of a single game.  Seniors Nick Maisel and Louis Frank also dominated their opponents in securing the 2nd and 4th singles matches.  Sterling Hedderich extended his winning streak to 5 matches with a solid win at #5, and Paul Lee, in his first singles action of the year, made short work of his opponent at #6. Andover jumped off to a good start by taking all three doubles points in decisive fashion.  The singles matches were generally closer with three of them being decided by third set tie-breakers.  Sterling Hedderich and Paul Lee were able to pull out the fifth and sixth singles matches, but Nick Maisel lost a very well played match at number 2. Exeter defeated a greatly improved Tabor squad in an exciting match on Saturday.  In the doubles Mark Coutin and Will Abisalih made quick work of their opponents, but unfortunately third doubles was losing at the same time.  The second doubles match was decisive and seniors Louis Frank an Nick Maisel raised the level of their game to win a tiebreaker which clinched the doubles point for Exeter.  All of the singles matches were well played.  Mark Coutin was particularly impressive at number one as he decisively defeated Tabor's Jay Dolan in a match that featured great all-court play.  Most of the other matches were close and all were well played. Exeter traveled to Milton to play their undefeated team.  Both teams were short handed as Nick Maisel was not available for Exeter, and Milton was missing their #1 player.  Milton started out by sweeping the doubles.  In singles, Mark Coutin played an excellent match in overwhelming his opponent at #1.  The most exciting match was at #6 singles where James Ying played a well but finally succumbed in a third set tiebreaker. Exeter got off to a great start by winning the top two doubles to secure the first point.  The teams of Coutin and Abisalih, and Frank and Maisel played very aggressive tennis and won their matches in convincing fashion.  Exeter had lots of chances in singles, but we fell just short.  Mark Coutin continued his winning ways with a strong performance at #1 singles.  Nick Maisel and Paul Lee both played excellent matches only to come up short in the third set. This was a match which got away from us.  All three doubles teams started slowly.  The 2nd doubles team of Louis Frank and Nick Maisel were able to rally for an exciting come from behind victory.  Mark Coutin and Will Abisalih fell behind 6-3 before staging a great rally.  They fought off five match points before succumbing in a thrilling tie-breaker.  Exeter had some good chances in singles, but was ultimately only able to win at first and sixth singles.  Mark’s 6-0, 6-0 win at #1 raised his record to an impressive 8 and 3 for the season.  Submitted by Coach Tony Greene

Exeter returned to the New England’s after a two year absence.  They drew a powerful Taft team in the first round.  Although the final score was 4 to 0 for Taft, Exeter put up a valiant struggle.  Exeter was leading in two of the three unfinished matches, and was tied in the third.  The first singles match between Mark Coutin and Taft’s PG Peter Huong was a pleasure to watch.  The momentum went back and forth before Peter made a final surge to clinch the third set, and to earn the fourth point for Taft.  The tournament experience was good for Exeter’s young team, and I am sure that they will be a force to reckon with next year.  Submitted by Coach Tony Greene

After quickly losing the doubles point, Exeter put up a tremendous struggle in singles before finally succumbing.  After Paul Lee won at #6, and Exeter lost at three and four, the team was left with the task of sweeping the final three singles matches. Mark Coutin fought from behind throughout his match with Trey Meyer, and seemed on the verge of pulling even when the match was abandoned.  At #2 Nick Maisel played some of his best tennis of the year, in his match with Andover’s strong #2 Foster Jebsen, and he was tied in the third set when Andover won its decisive 4th point.  In a match that could have gone either way, Sterling Hedderich lost 7-5 in the third set.  Submitted by Coach Tony Greene
