Phillips Exeter opened the 2008-09 season with a victory at Tabor Academy. Exeter was successful in the early going, forcing several turnovers in the half-court into transition layups. Exeter was able to generate several open three-point attempts, converting 11 of 23 for the game. Josh Bartelstein '09 connected for four threes, while Mitchell Kates '09 and Greg Newton '10 added three each. Tabor was held to a 31% field goal percentage as all Exeter players saw action in the game. Rob Reid '09 added 19 points and 15 rebounds in little more than 20 minutes of play to lead all scorers.

Phillips Exeter improved to 2-0 with an early season victory at Governor's Academy on Wednesday afternoon. Exeter jumped out to a big early lead by pounding the ball inside to center Rob Reid '09 and holding Governor's half-court offense to 31% field goal percentage for the game. Forward Pat Donnelly '09 held Governor's leading scorer to limited shot attempts, resulting in several transition opportunities for Exeter. Five Exeter players scored in double figures with Mitchell Kates '09 leading the way with 22 points, including four three-pointers. Rob Reid contributed 12 points and 12 rebounds in the contest.

In a battle of teams with similar playing styles, Phillips Exeter notched its third consecutive win --all on the road -- by defeating Williams College JVs on Saturday. A sluggish first half riddled with foul trouble found Exeter with as large as a 15 point deficit. Williams enjoyed easy scoring opportunities as Exeter struggled to match their intensity in the early going. Exeter lost starter Greg St Jean '09 to an injury ten minutes into the game, and was forced to manage the half with two others in foul trouble. Down 13 at intermission, Exeter gained momentum midway through the second frame as Cody Mivshek '09 provided consistent defensive pressure, forcing several plays on the defensive end, which resulted in high percentage shots for Exeter. Increased defensive pressure inspired the offensive end as Exeter converted on 5 of 9 three point attempts after shooting just 2 of 7 in the first half. Six players scored in double figures for Exeter, with Cody Mivshek leading the way with 22 and 10 rebounds. Robby Reid '09 had his third consecutive double-double of the year with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Mitchell Kates '09 added 21 points and 7 assists to only 1 turnover. The win brings Exeter to 3-0 on the season.

Phillips Exeter suffered its first loss of the season falling to a talented Tilton School team on the road. In a game that saw several lead changes, Exeter failed to hold a five-point advantage deep into the second half and was outscored by Tilton 10-0 in the final two minutes. Exeter shot the ball well and produced several high percentage shots versus Tilton's changing defenses throughout the game. However, Tilton connected on two key three point shots as the shot clock expired during critical moments of the game. Josh Bartelstein '09 connected for six three point shots, several in clutch moments. Bartelstein added 6 rebounds, 3 steals and two charges on the defensive end. Cody Mivshek '09 also played a strong defensive game collecting four charges in addition to his 12 points. Rob Reid '09 continued his streak of double-doubles with 16 points and 12 rebounds while facing one of the premier centers in the class of 2009. Exeter heads into final exams and a difficult road match at the Blackburn Tournament, hosted by Worcester Academy this weekend.

Exeter fell to Blair Academy in the first round of the Blackburn Tournament on Saturday afternoon, dropping its second consecutive game. Exeter never got into the flow of the game as Blair Academy converted on several opportunities in the early minutes. While Blair was hot, Exeter endured a serious first half shooting drought, falling behind by double digits at the half. Struggling to find a combination of players to get on track in the second half, Exeter managed to narrow the gap to seven with possession of the ball, but failed to capitalize. Blair took full advantage of Exeter's sluggish defensive effort, bursting out to a 10-0 run. Exeter converted on 4 of 23 three point attempts for the game, surrendering 15 more points than the season average. The lone bright spots for Exeter came courtesy of Josh Bartelstein's '09 13 points, including 3 of the team's 4 three pointers and Robby Reid's 18 points and 9 rebounds.

In a rescheduled match vs. Proctor Academy, Phillips Exeter earned its fifth win of the season Monday evening in Exeter. Playing six consecutive road games to start the season, Exeter came out of the gate strong in building a 17 point first-half lead against visiting Proctor. The game featured an up-tempo style resulting in several transition baskets for Exeter. PEA opened up a double digit lead outscoring Proctor 15-2 midway through the first half with Cody Mivshek '09 scoring 8 points in less than a minute. Exeter carried a 13 point lead into the half. Proctor closed to within 10 points in the second half before Pat Donnelly'09 and Josh Bartelstein '09 connecetd on three pointers on consecutive trips, pushing the lead out of reach. Mivshek led all scorers in the game with 20 points. Center Rob Reid '09 continued his strong play in the middle for Exeter with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Exeter will meet defending Class A Champion Brewster Academy at Exeter on Wednesday.

Phillips Exeter lost a hard-fought battle versus defending Class A Champion Brewster Academy in front of a big crowd Wednesday afternoon. Exeter handled Brewster's full court pressure by sharing the ball and attacking the rim in transition. Brewster, #2 in the pre-season national rankings, played three different defenses in the first half in an attempt to break Exeter's offesive rhythm. Exeter forfeited several opportunities to connect on open shots in the early going, yet was able to build a 9 point lead with five minutes to play in the first half on Showley Nicholson's '12 runner in the lane. Josh Bartlestein '09 and Pat Donnelly '09 combined for 20 first-half points as Exeter took a three point lead into the break. Following intermission, Exeter continued to attack Brewster's changing defenses and maintained a 4 point lead though the first 16 minutes of the half. Cody Mivshek '09, Bartelstein and Donnelly connected three times each from behind the arc, only to see Brewster converting on second opportunities on their offensive possessions. Brewster closed the lead to one on an offensive rebound and three point shot with less than three minutes to play. Exeter failed to convert in the paint on consecutive trips, sandwiched by two Brewster free throws resulting in the first lead for the visitors in the game. Brewster converted on consectutive trips to the line in the final minute to push the lead to four at the final horn. Josh Bartelstein led Exeter with 22 points while Donnelly and Mivshek added 16 each. Mitch Kates '09 had 4 steals and Greg St Jean '09 added 5 assists for Exeter. Congratulations to both Brewster and Exeter players for forty minutes of competitive play that provided an exciting brand of basketball for the students to enjoy. Exeter will face a difficult opponent when Choate comes to town this Saturday.

Phillips Exeter notched its seventh win of the season at Kimball Union Wednesday afternoon. Although Exeter struggled to convert open opportunities in the early going, the offense found its rhythm and connected on 56% of its shots for the game. Early foul trouble forced PEA to turn to the bench ten minutes into the game. Kwasi Boadi's '09 defensive pressure and Pat Donnelly's '09 back-to-back three pointers ignited a 14-3 run as Exeter carried the lead into the half.
Poor decisions in transition and a defensive lapse resulted in a Kimball Union run that trimmed a twelve point lead to five early in the second half, forcing Exeter to regroup during a timeout. Playing with a smaller lineup, Exeter was able to jump ahead with increased ball pressure and transition baskets over the next three minutes. Greg St. Jean '09 (7 assists and 13 rebounds) found Cody Mivshek '09 and Mitchell Kates '09 for three point conversions on consecutive possessions that pushed the Exeter lead back to 17 points. Mivshek (14 pts) and Donnelly (21pts) combined for eight of eleven shooting from behind the arc. Several Exeter players contributed to the road win.

Phillips Exeter picked up a win versus Hebron Academy in front of a large home crowd on Friday night. All Exeter players saw minutes of action in the game with ten reaching the scorebook. A first half riddled with sloppy play gave way to an eight minute second half spurt that put the game out of reach. Converting nearly 80% from the free throw line for the season, Exeter players combined for only 16 of 36 attempts for the game. Pat Donnelly '09 and Josh Bartelstein '09 picked up the shooting slack connecting for a total of 9 three-point shots in 15 attempts--combining for 40 of Exeter's 99 points. All Exeter starters reached double figure scoring in the game. Greg St. Jean '09 contributed to Exeter's run to start the half with 3 assists in a two minute span. St. Jean, fully recovered from an injury that sidelined him through January, played all five positions for Exeter and finished with a game high 17 rebounds and 7 assists. Exeter returns to Class A play Wednesday with a matchup with New Hampton, one of the top teams in New England this season.

Phillips Exeter picked up a Class A win defeating a strong New Hampton team in front of a big crowd Wednesday afternoon. New Hampton brought physical play and red hot three-point shooting into Exeter's home gym.
The first half saw excellent offensive execution by both teams. Josh Bartelstein '09 connected on three early trifectas (16 game points) helping Exeter gain early momentum. Exeter took care of the ball and generated high percentage shots, but could not distance themselves from New Hampton's quick transition game.
Trailing by three at the half, New Hampton jumped out of the gate after intermission with an 13-4 run and their first lead of the game. New Hampton limited Exeter to a season low number of three point attempts, forcing Exeter to rely on the interior play of Rob Reid '09. Reid scored all 11 of his points in the second half keeping Exeter within striking distance. Backto-back threes by Bartelstein and Cody Mivshek '09 narrowed New Hampton's lead to three with five minutes remaining. Several key stops and defensive rebounds in the final minutes provided the opportunity for Exeter to regain the lead at 62-60 with just over a minute remaining. New Hampton failed to convert on the interior with under 15 seconds remaining as Greg St. Jean '09 collected his sixth rebound of the game before being fouled. St. Jean delivered two free throws with 7 seconds remaining, pushing Exeter's lead to 64-60. St. Jean, Mitchell Kates '09 and Greg Newton '10 ran Exeter's offense with efficiency versus New Hampton's changing defenses throughout the game. Exeter produced 19 assists to only 3 turnovers for the game in what proved to be a physical, college-like contest. Congratulations to both teams for forty minutes of high level basketball.
