The Big Red fell to Governors Academy, the 2007-2008 New England Division 2 Champions, 4-7 in their first league game of the season. The Exeter girls jumped on Governor’s new rink and played a very strong first period with some great intensity and teamwork. PEA definitely had the momentum in the first period playing some inspired hockey, especially forward Christina Bravi '10 who tallied a hat trick with assists from Cara Jankowski '11 (2) and Lauren Greer '09 (1). Exeter ended the first period up 3-0.
In the second period, it seemed the case that we woke a sleeping giant and although Governor’s was not as much a factor in the first period, they regrouped and started attacking our lead. With some strong shot-making, they tied the game halfway through the first period and continued with this momentum to pull ahead of Exeter with 2 more goals. Alex Carpenter #19 of Governors Academy was the main force behind their 5 unanswered goals.
Carrying the momentum into the third period Governors scored a goal off their power play in the first 30 seconds of the period. Exeter’s Mariah Napolitano '09 responded to this goal with a shot from the point assisted by Jordan Schildhaus '12. With the score at 6-4 midway through the third, Exeter battled trying to bring the score back to even. Although creating some good offensive opportunities in the last minutes of the game, it was too late and the game ended with a score of 7-4. The last goal came off an empty net shot from Governors, Exeter having pulled their goalie to add an extra player. Lisa Marshall '10 played the entire game stopping 30 of 36 shots.

The girls’ varsity ice hockey team was out for revenge this past Saturday against Choate Rosemary Hall. Remembering last years result, the girls were determined to take it to Choate as soon as the puck dropped. The first period was underway; and it was clear a fast game was going to be played. However, at the 13:29 mark, questionable officiating slowed the play; and the rest of the period was all about specialty teams. Choate was unable to capitalize on their numerous power play attempts, thanks to Exeter’s penalty kill units and Lisa Marshall’s performance in goal. Lisa '10 was solid the rest of the period, stopping 15 of 15 shots, including 5 shots on Choate’s two-man advantage. Exeter tallied 9 shots on net, but was also unable to slip one past senior goaltender, Jocelyn Yokow.
The second period had more flow to it as there were only 4 penalties called. Marshall continued to hold strong and did not allow Choate to score. She made an amazing save on a one-timer shot that came at the 12:22 mark. Exeter’s forwards had some wonderful opportunities to score, but could not find the back of the net. At the end of the second, Exeter and Choate were still scoreless.
The third period was where all the action took place. Within a minute in the third, Exeter was yet again, called for a tripping penalty. This time, the ref awarded Choate a penalty shot. The Choate player came in wide, made a move across the crease, then quickly drew the puck back and shot. Lisa made a spectacular pad save which exploded the Exeter bench. Marshall continued to stand on her head while Exeter spent another 3 minutes in the box. With the help of the positive energy on the bench, Exeter killed off all of their penalties, but Choate was gaining momentum as they put twelve shots on goal in the first five minutes of the period. After a cluster in the defensive zone, Cristina Bravi '10 ended up with the puck on the left wing; she skated the puck toward the Choate goal and made a quick move on the goalie and slipped the puck five-hole. Exeter was finally on the board, 1-0. The end of the game felt like eternity, as penalty after penalty was called. Exeter went to the box on three other occasions while Choate spent some time in there as well, tallying five penalties. Exeter was down a man in the last minute of the game; Choate pulled their goalie for a six on four. The cheers from the bench continued as Exeter tried to hold on to the win. With 3.8 seconds left in the game, Senior, Captain, Lauren Greer ended up with the puck near the red-line; she shot at the open net and scored to make it 2-0. Exeter got their revenge!

The girls varsity hockey team stunned undefeated Brewster Academy in a thrilling and tense sudden-death contest to become champions of the first annual Exeter Invitational New Year's Tournament. "From the drop of the first puck to the 2:31 sudden-death overtime goal, the girls never let up," said Coach Melissa Pacific.
Exeter was determined to beat the number one ranked team in Division 1. Lisa Marshall '09 made three big saves in the first five minutes of the game; and the team held strong on Brewster’s three power play attempts. Exeter had a few scoring chances, but they were unable to solve Brewster’s goaltender. Exeter did a wonderful job on the fore-check , especially Jordan Schildhaus '11, who seemed to have an extra jump in her stride even after playing four hard-fought games in the two previous days. The first period ended scoreless despite great action at both ends.
At 9:12 in the second period, Exeter scored first. Lauren Greer '09 made a perfect breakout pass to upper Cristina Bravi. Bravi skated hard down the middle of the ice and fired a low, fast shot from the high slot using Brewster's own defenseman to screen the goalie. Exeter's second goal came with just 44 seconds remaining in the second period. Katharine Pujol '09 got the assist to Bravi, who decisively put the puck in the back of the net.
The third period was hard-fought and Brewster capitalized on numerous Exeter penalties with two goals, sending the game into sudden-death overtime.
Despite the late-game setbacks, Exeter's will to win did not break. The game winner came at 2:31. Lower Katie Sullivan won the draw back to Schildhaus, who took a shot on net. Brewster’s goalie gave a bouncy rebound and senior co-captain Kate Cunningham went hard to the net. The puck smacked off of the shaft of her stick and found its way across the goal-line, which sent the Exeter players spilling over the boards to celebrate the most exciting home win in years. Looking back on the win, Captain Lauren Greer said, "Each and every person did their part to get us there. I have never in my four years at Exeter seen that kind of work ethic and desire in people."
Upper goalie Lisa Marshall made 28 saves, and strong plays from defensemen Mariah Napolitano '09, Chelsea Brewer '10, Allison Franklin '09 and offensive threats from right wing Cara Jankowski '11 proved too much for a very talented and deep Brewster team.

After a long road trip to Pomfret School, Exeter continued to prove they are a force to be reckoned with. Just fifteen seconds into the game, upper Cristina Bravi made a great pass to Captain Lauren Greer who put the puck past Pomfret’s netminder. Minutes later, Greer and Bravi flip flopped roles and Bravi scored her first goal of the game. It was no doubt Exeter was off to a great start with a 2-0 lead. Greer continued her point streak and scored another goal before the end of the period.
Pomfret came out strong in the second and proved they could play with Exeter. They scored a goal at the 12:41 mark and continued to play with exceptional speed. Remembering what had happened to them in the first game of the season, Exeter was determined not to let down. Lower Katie Sullivan won the draw back to Martha Griffin '12 for a perfect shot on goal. Sullivan fought hard for the rebound and put the puck past Pomfret goalie, O’Sullivan. Exeter’s Lisa Marshall '10 continued to hold strong in net and stopped 13 of 14 in the second period.
The third period was hard-fought. Upper Casey Waugh had a wonderful wrist shot on goal, but was unable to beat the goalie. Gaby Weigal '10, Mimi Reichenbach '12, and Liz Dethy '11 took it to Pomfret’s offense, while Devi Lockwood '10 and Kris Krull '11 played great defense. Exeter’s last goal came halfway through the third period when senior Allison Franklin '09 made a hard pass to PG Katharine Pujol, who skated the puck into the zone to put it past O’Sullivan. Exeter came out on top, 5 to 1. Lisa Marshall made 28 of 29 saves and continues her solid play in goal.

Exeter topped off a wonderful week of hockey by beating Concord Youth U19 team 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Big Red got on the board eight minutes into the game. Katie Sullivan '11 jumped off the bench and entered the offensive zone with great speed. She cut into the open space in the high slot and tapped it by the Concord goalie. Exeter continued to pour on the pressure as Liz Dethy '11, Gaby Weigel '10, and Mimi Reichenbach '12 played an outstanding first period. At the four minute mark, Sullivan continued her scoring streak and ended the period with a natural hat-trick. Jankowski '11 and Brewer '10 assisted on her second goal, while goalie, Kat Pettengill '09 had the lone assist on Sullivan’s third goal.
Kat did not see many shots in the first period, but she played the puck very well. She made some wonderful stops when the puck was wrapped in the zone, and made a huge breakout pass, under pressure, in the middle of the first period which sent the Exeter forwards flying into the Concord zone.
The scoring continued into the second period. Bravi '10 tallied a goal at 1:18 into the period. Seniors Allison Franklin and Lauren Greer assisted. Sullivan scored her fourth goal of the game quickly after that. Prep Martha Griffin received a great pass from Chelsea Brewer and skated down the outside of the ice and recorded her first goal of the year.
The third period was full of excitement as Liz Dethy, Gaby Weigel, and Mimi Reichenbach put pressure on the Concord goalie. Devi Lockwood '10 and Kris Krull '11 played very well defensively, while contributing to the offensive rush. Pettengill was strong in goal the entire game, only letting one get past her in late in the third. Number 9 from Concord rushed the puck at mid-ice, stick- handled through two Exeter players and beat Pettengill with an outstanding shot that was placed right under the crossbar. Exeter out-shot Concord 28 to 11. Exeter plays at home on Wednesday vs BB&N.

Exeter continues their win streak at home by beating BB&N 5 to 1 on Wednesday afternoon. The girls came out passing the puck very well and put a lot of pressure on the BB&N goaltender. However, after 2-3 minutes into the game, Exeter slowed their pace and the play was even on both ends of the rink. Marshall held BB&N on a few scoring chances. At the ten minute mark, Greer solved BB&N’s goaltender, S. Moccia. The assists came from linemates Cara Jankowski and Cristina Bravi.
The girls picked up the pace in the second period and tallied another three goals. Greer scored her second of the game and Jordan Schildhaus picked up her fourth goal of the season with the assists coming from Cunningham and Bravi. Tamara Maravalli played a great game with a lot of communication and hustle; she scored her third goal of the year and with the assist coming from Martha Griffin. Lisa Marshall continued her strong play in the goal, but a cluster in front of the net allowed BB&N to score their lone goal of the game.
Greer scored her third goal of the game by beating Moccia far side on a beautiful low shot for the hat-trick. Marshall was relieved at the 9 minute mark and recorded 14 saves. Kat Pettengill jumped right into the play by making three big saves, including one on the penalty kill. Kat stopped all seven shots she faced.

The Big Red traveled to Deerfield on Saturday to find a pair of referees who invited a new meaning to physical play in women’s ice hockey. Exeter started off a bit slow and fell behind early from a breakdown in the defensive zone. Deerfield’s Weinstein found her teammate, Moncoin, wide open in the slot for a perfectly placed one-timer. The Big Red was stunned as they fell behind early in the game. Co-captain Lauren Greer confronted the ref after the first period to determine what he might be looking for in order to call a penalty. It was certain; he was going to let the girls play!
Exeter came out with fire in the second and immediately attacked the Deerfield goal. Perhaps their best scoring attempt was a 2 on 1 where Greer shot the puck for a perfect rebound. Bravi followed hard to the net, but the rebound was just out of reach. Marshall played well for the Big Red in the second, stopping all 9 shots.
The third period was full of excitement. Exeter again dominated the play, mostly taking advantage of Deerfield’s four penalties. At the 11:14 mark, Bravi scored the lone Exeter goal off of the power play. Greer came out of the corner, skated around the circle and was about to shoot, but was knocked to the ice. Bravi took the puck and skated it around Lessard and tapped it in the far side. Hard work by the white line and our defenseman held us in the game. Lisa Marshall was outstanding in the third period, especially late in the game when she stonewalled Hadded on a breakaway.
Exeter found themselves in yet another overtime game. The pace was fast and there were wonderful opportunities at both ends of the ice. Lessard covered her rebounds well and Exeter’s Lisa Marshall made a huge save in another one-time attempt. Both teams were unable to score in the five minute sudden-death period. Marshall ended the game with twenty saves.

Exeter improved to 11-1-1 this Wednesday against Holderness School. Exeter went on the board in the first period with a pair of goals by senior captain Lauren Greer. The assists went to Bravi and Cunningham respectively. Marshall only had two shots on her in the first, but they were both key saves and she kept the Big Red in the game.
In the second period, Exeter scored two textbook goals. PG Katharine Pujol gave a great pass to Jordan Schildhaus for a breakaway. Jordan faked the deke and beat the Holderness goalie on the blocker side. The second goal came off a beautiful set up. The Big Red had control of the offensive zone for quite some time. Allison Franklin took a hard low shot from the point; and lower, Cara Jankowski tipped it into the top corner. Lisa Marshall stopped all 5 shots in the second period.
Kat Pettengill started the third period and was put to the test rather quickly. She stopped a flurry of shots in the first two minutes. She also came up big at the ten minute mark to keep Holderness off the scoreboard. Allison Franklin again tallied a point by scoring a wonderful goal from the point, unassisted, at 9:06 of the third. Kat ended the game with 11 saves.

Exeter had a wake-up call when they found themselves behind by two goals in the first seven minutes of the game. A combination of Nobles speed and Exeter coming out flat, contributed to the sloppy play and too many scoring attempts for Nobles. Marshall tried to hold her own in goal, but Exeter fell behind 3-0 in the first period.
The second period was a battle as Exeter had a few scoring chances, but was unable to solve the Nobles goalie. Nobles tallied another goal midway through the second to go ahead 4-0.
The third was not any better for Exeter, as they allowed Nobles to score two quick goals. Exeter finally went on the board late in the third when Jankowski put a shot on goal and Bravi tapped in the rebound. Two minutes later, Greer took a shot from the high slot and Bravi was there again for the rebound. The final was 6-2 and Exeter suffered their second loss of the season. Lisa Marshall ended with 43 saves.

Exeter continued their win streak at home on Friday evening against Hebron Academy despite being outshot 27 to 20.
The scoring started early as Lower Cara Jankowski put a perfect shot on net and line-mate Katie Sullivan picked up the rebound and tucked it in at 14:14 of the first period. Just four minutes later, Bravi and Schildhaus combined on a short-handed goal to put Exeter ahead 2-0. Exeter killed both penalties and Marshall stood tall, stopping all 12 shots she faced. Lisa’s best save came when she stone-walled Hebron's rebound attempt by making a flashy save with the left pad. Marshall also played the puck well in the d-zone, which helped the defense break the puck out of the zone. Exeter scored 2 goals on only 6 shots in the first.
Hebron was determined not to let Exeter gain control of the game and they scored 2 minutes into the second period with a riffled shot from the top of the slot that beat Marshall. However, Exeter’s determination and hard work proved to be too much for the Lumberjacks. PG defense-woman, Katharine Pujol took a wonderful shot from the point and co-captain Kate Cunningham roofed the puck into the top corner with a great backhander. Bravi added another goal when she scored on the power play with the assists going to Greer and Schildhaus. The shots were 11 to 6 in favor of Hebron, but Devi Lockwood and Kris Krull played great defense and did not let Hebron capitalize.
The third period was full of excitement as Gaby, Mimi, and Liz proved they could battle the Lumberjacks. The three generated great offense and had a few scoring chances, but were unable to score. The lone goal in the third was scored by co-captain Lauren Greer on a hard-fought breakaway. Lauren beat two defenders and then beat the Hebron goalie's high blocker. Casey Waugh had a strong game at center and made good decisions with the puck. Senior Kat Pettengill entered the game around the eight minute mark on a beautiful change on the fly. She held strong and stopped all the shots she faced.

The Big Red traveled three-plus hours to take on the Berkshire Bears at their new ice arena in Sheffield, MA. The two-rink complex was quite amazing; and the facility was to be dedicated after the game.
Exeter found themselves fighting the refs more than the Berkshire players right off the bat. Exeter took three penalties in the first; and Berkshire capitalized on one of them. Lisa Marshall was outstanding in goal as she stopped 19 for 20 shots and made two huge saves on a two-on-one and another on a breakaway. Exeter only managed to put eight shots on goal in the first, but proved they were going to keep battling.
The second period was like the first and Berkshire scored again on a power play. One minute later, Exeter got on the board. Lower Katie Sullivan won the draw all the way back to Senior Mariah Napolitano. Mariah took a low, hard shot on net and Cara Jankowski was there to put in the rebound. Exeter’s bench came unglued with excitement and Exeter controlled the rest of the period. Three minutes later, Exeter tied the game at 2, when Sully broke the puck out of the zone and had a 2 on 1 with line-mate Kate Cunningham. The two had great speed entering the zone and Cunningham made a smart play by going to the net hard and tying up the defensemen’s stick while Sully smoked the goalie with a perfectly placed shot underneath the crossbar. The shots were even in the second with 12 a side. Marshall made another huge save on a two-on-one attempt.
The third period, yet again, started with Exeter in the penalty box. Greer and Bravi were out on the kill when Bravi made a smart read on the boards to intercept a pass; Greer ended up with the puck on a half-breakaway and entered the zone wide. She too beat the goalie high glove-side with another great shot underneath the crossbar. Greer and Griffin connected on the last goal, this time on the power play. Pujol took a shot from the point and Greer tipped it as it went by. The Berkshire goalie made a great save, but Griffin was there to tap in the rebound. Exeter was ahead 4-2 and had a lot of momentum, well… not for long. Exeter was put in the box again for the 9th time in the game. Berkshire pulled their goalie for a 6 on 4 advantage a scored a goal off of a cluster in front of Marshall. Exeter took a time-out with 40 seconds left in the game. Jordan Schildhaus skated the puck into the offensive zone to waste time and to not allow Berkshire to pull their goalie. Exeter won 4-3 despite being put in the box ten times compared to Berkshire’s two penalties! Many of the goals in the game were on specialty teams. Berkshire was 2 for 10 on the power play and scored their other goal on a 6 on 4. Exeter scored two of their four goals short-handed and on the power play, Exeter was 1-2 on the power play. Lisa Marshall had a great game making 40 saves.

The Big Red suffered their third loss of the season to arch rival Phillips Andover on Wednesday afternoon. The two teams are very similar and the game got off to a great start. Andover scored first on a power play goal halfway through the first period. The second period was even and ended scoreless. The third period was full of excitement as Exeter got on the board. Allison Franklin'09 took a shot from the point and Bravi'10 was in front for the tip. Exeter then scored again, but the goal was called back due to a delayed tripping penalty. Exeter was caught with too many men on the ice around the four minute mark and Andover capitalized on the power play. Exeter fought hard to get the goal back, but was unable to find enough time left to pull it out. The two teams take the ice again on February 28th with the Big Red hosting the Big Blue and looking for revenge. Lisa Marshall '10 ended with 20 saves of 22. Shot were 22 to 16 in favor of Andover.

Coach Pacific was anxiously waiting for this game to get underway as she wanted to take it to her alma mater. The Big Red fell behind early in the game as St Mark’s scored just two minutes into the game. Exeter scored next with some help from an SM defender. PG K. Pujol took a shot on net and a SM defenseman accidently tipped it in. St. Mark’s got the goal back with under three minutes left in the period from powerhouse forward Casey Pickett. Marshall ended the period with 9 saves.
Exeter got it rolling in the second when Cara Jankowski put one home from a wonderful pass from Greer. Katie Sullivan got the go-ahead goal as she beat the SM goalie high on a 2 on 1. Krull and Pujol tallied the assists.
Exeter exploded in the third, scoring three goals. Pujol scored her second goal of the game from a blast from the top of the circle. Greer tallied the next two goals, the last goal coming on the penalty kill. Lisa Marshall ended with 21 saves and Exeter improves to 7-2-1 in Division 1.

LISA MARSHALL EARNS HER FIFTH SHUTOUT IN 2-0 VICTORY AGAINST BREWSTER ACADEMY
The Big Red remains undefeated (in league games) at home this season. They picked up their sixteenth win on Saturday and are 12-0-0 at home. The first period started off with great speed, and Brewster put the pressure on early by putting five shots on goal in the first five minutes of the game. Exeter settled their play, and both teams exchanged wonderful scoring opportunities. Lisa Marshall was outstanding in goal and made two left-pad saves to keep Brewster off the board. Casey Waugh, Tamara Maravalli and Martha Griffin played with exceptional drive and determination and had their share of scoring chances.
Exeter came out on fire in the second. Katie Sullivan continued her outstanding play while the defensemen played brilliantly. Great fore-checking and winning 50/50 pucks led to both Exeter’s goals. The first goal was created by great hustle from Jordan Schildhaus. Brewster had the puck behind their net and Jordan flushed it out. She saw Greer and Bravi open in the slot. Jordan made a quick pass to Bravi who was on the back door and she tapped it in. Under two minutes later, Jankowski and Cunningham created a turnover on the wall. The puck popped out; and senior defenseman Mariah Napolitano took a quick snap shot. The puck took a funny bounce off the Brewster goalie and found its way into the net. Exeter was ahead 2-0 at the 10 minute mark of the second period. The game began to get physical and both clubs took penalties. Exeter’s penalty kill units were extraordinary, including Marshall who stonewalled Brewster’s #8 point blank. Marshall also made a key breakaway save and kept Brewster scoreless in the second.
The third period was much of the same as the second: specialty teams. Exeter’s main goal was to get the puck deep and kill time on the clock. Lisa Marshall ended the game with 27 saves. Exeter totaled 19 shots. It was a great win and Exeter moves up the chart on playoff potential. The Big Red has another big game coming up against Tabor Academy on Wednesday in Marion, MA.

After a big win against Brewster, Exeter dropped a 7-2 decision at Tabor on Wednesday. Exeter appeared to have left their energy in New Hampshire and Tabor jumped out to the lead just 4 minutes into the game. By the end of the period, Exeter found some momentum and were able to go into the 1st period break with a 1-1 tie when Jordan Schildhaus '11, after receiving a centering pass from Bravi and Greer, put the puck through the Tabor goalie’s legs. Exeter gained their only lead of the game half way through the second on a 4vs4 Cristina Bravi '10 goal. Lauren Greer '09 skated the puck down the ice and after a low shot on the goalie’s far pad, Bravi was able to spin away from a Tabor defenseman and knock the rebound into the net. Exeter did not hold their lead long, as just a minute later Tabor tied the score up. A short-handed Tabor goal with 46 seconds left in the second gave Tabor the lead for good. Exeter came out strong in the third period but was unable to put another puck past the Tabor goalie. Tabor put the game away in the second half of the third with 4 goals, one being an empty netter. Lisa Marshall '10 ended the game with 27 saves. Exeter drops to 16-4-1 but still remains undefeated at home this season. -Submitted by Mariah Napolitano

Exeter snapped a one game losing streak on Saturday as they won their 17th game of the season at Northfield Mount Hermon. Exeter controlled the first period and put twelve shots on net, with Kate Cunningham '09 finally able to sneak one past the NMH goalie with 2:16 left in the first period. Cunningham tapped the puck in from behind the goalie after a Cara Jankowski '11 tip of a Chelsea Brewer '10 shot squeaked through the goalie’s legs. Defensively, Exeter did not allow a single NMH shot on net in the first period. Exeter came out in the second hoping to put pressure on NMH and to extend their lead. A mere two and a half minutes into the period, Lauren Greer '09 put a Cristina Bravi '10 rebound into the net. Exeter continued to pepper the NMH goalie with 20 shots in the second but were unable to score again. Exeter put the game out of reach in the third with two goals, the first coming 5 minutes into the period, when Bravi scored with some chaos in front of the NMH net. Jordan Schildhaus '11 and Greer were given assists. Katherine Pujol '09 scored Exeter’s final goal with six minutes left as Jankowski received her second assist of the game. The game ended with a 4-0 Exeter victory. Lisa Marshall '10 and Kat Pettengill '09 earned the shut out with a combined total of seven saves.
