Volleyball: 2007 Season Roundup
Positive Communication On Court Creates Great Team Chemistry
Exeter soundly beat St. Paul's, New Hampton & Cushing but lost to Andover. No scores reported in this scrimmage tournament.Submitted by Coach Saltman
Three service runs were the key to Exeter's dominance of our home opener against Cushing. Kate Kelly's five point service run in the first game pushed us ahead. Olivia Fankuchen's 13 point run put the second game out of reach. Not to be outdone, Kiki Fonge put together a 15 point streak to run away with the third game. While those service runs were a highlight, we also had some difficulty with missed serves at other points in the match. We hustled and communicated, covering the court defensively. Powerful hitting by Kate Kelly dominated net play.Submitted by Coach Saltman Game stats

In an exciting day of volleyball, Big Red came away with one win and one loss. We started slow against NMH, but once we got our serve receive going, we dominated offensively and defensively. Service runs by Ariana Marnicio, Olivia Fankuchen, and Talia Bolnick put the first game out of reach. Consistent siding out was the key to victory in the second game. Hotchkiss proved to be a much tougher opponent, with excellent blocking and a varied attack. Watching them hit in warmup got us pumped up for the match, as we knew we would have to play some tough defense. We rose to the challenge and played a hard-fought match, covering our court well and digging some powerful spikes. An early 3-10 deficit proved too much to come back from, despite playing them even for the remainder of the first game. In the second game, we sided out seven straight servers without allowing a point. Consistent hitting and solid blocking wore down the Hotchkiss defense and offense, leading us to a 30-24 win. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the offense going again in the deciding game and fell behind early. Kate Kelly led the day with 6 kills. Talia Bolnick posted 4 blocks against an opposing middle who could "jump out of the gym". Olivia Fankuchen tallied an amazing 18 digs, reading the hitters and covering huge expanses of the court.Submitted by Coach Saltman Game stats
This was an outstanding volleyball match, about as even as two teams could be. Both teams played intensely and athletically throughout the match. Choate opened up an 11-19 lead in the first game, but Exeter fought back to 24-25 before dropping it. We played from behind most of the second game, although we fought back to 23-24 before facing a tough Choate serving run. Our hitting was ok in the first two games, but we couldn't find holes in the Choate defense, as they picked up our hardest attacks. In the third game, we kept them on their heals and forced errors. The forth game was intense, as neither team took a commanding lead. From 22-21, the game bounced back and forth a point at a time. Exeter stopped two Choate match points before Willa Cockshutt served two straight winners to end it. Unfortunately, the Choate defense picked up on our hitters in the deciding game. Setters Ariana Marnicio and Talia Bolnick also did a great job from the service line, contributing 17 and 16 points respectively. Talia, Louise Breen, and Olivia Lenson put up a tough block. Olivia Fankuchen controlled the defense with tremendous digging and passing. Kate Kelly and Willa Cockshutt provided the offensive power from the outside. The team should be proud of how well we played against this tenacious Choate team.Submitted by Coach Saltman Game Stats

In the first of three consecutive road matches, Exeter cruised to a win over New Hampton. Our consistent and powerful serve kept the pressure on New Hampton. Kiki Fonge and Olivia Fankuchen led the day with 12 and 14 points respectively. We also received well, siding out with ease. We received a lot of free balls, but couldn't get much of an attack going and had too many hitting errors. Everybody on the team got some court time, as well.Submitted by Coach SaltmanGame Stats
Big Red Volleyball fought hard and emerged the victor in this match, dubbed Sweatfest 2007. After a long bus ride, the team arrived in an 80-85 degree gym. The match lasted two hours, stopped by frequent breaks to dry hands and wet spots on the court, in addition to multiple replayed points when the officials were unwilling to make a judgement call on balls near the line. Momentum swung both ways throughout the match, until Exeter started to pull away near the end of the third game. Loomis scored a lot of points with a hard attack from the outside. They also saved shanked passes with intense effort. Exeter's attack displayed its best control yet this season. We hit where we wanted, found holes, and played smart offense. Willa Cockshutt and Kate Kelly ended with 12 and 10 kills respectively. Each of our servers contributed several runs and kept constant pressure on Loomis. Serve receive was excellent. Olivia Fankuchen posted 25 digs on the day. Setters Talia Bolnick and Ariana Marnicio delivered the ball well, and did a great job making adjustments to very tight officiating. It was a great win for us.Submitted by Coach SaltmanGame Stats
With mixed stong play and sloppy play, Exeter soundly defeated St. Pauls. Poor communication led to poor passes, so we had some trouble getting the offense going. Some good serving streaks helped us along, as did a plethora of missed serves from the other side. After libero Olivia Fankuchen went out with an injury late in the second game, we rose to the occasion and picked up our offense. Kate Kelly finished the day with 10 kills while Talia Bolnick contributed 15 points from the service line without missing a serve.Submitted by Coach SaltmanGame Stats
Despite some injuries, PEA dominated NMH before a Parent's Weekend crowd. Monica Jain and Dana Staley did a nice job taking the place of an injured Willa Cockshutt, playing nearly error-free volleyball. PEA led offensively all day and shut down the NMH attack. Sloppy play at the end of the first game allowed NMH to fight back, deleting our 23-17 lead. From there on we played more inspired volleyball. The third game was highlighted by Ariana Marnicio's 14 point service run, while she pinpointed weaknesses in the NMH serve receive. When they did return the ball, it was met with a fierce counter-attack. We now carry our 6-2 record into our toughest week, facing Andover and Deerfield who have a combined one loss on the season.Submitted by Coach SaltmanGame Stats
Facing an undefeated Andover team, we needed to play our best volleyball, but our day was plagued by errors and poor communication. Our defense did a good job against a strong Andover attack. Our attack was lacking, however. Andover did a superb job taking away our best hits with their block and fast defense. Our serve was equally ineffective, with only four aces and nine errors. We have a lot of work ahead of us in preparation for the rematch in a few weeks.Submitted by Coach SaltmanGame Stats
An energized Big Red team faced a powerful Deerfield squad in this 5 game thriller. We set the tone early with some big blocks. Throughout the match, Talia Bolnick and Louise Breen worked hard to shut down the Deerfield attack, combining for 28 stuffs on the day. Talia's 17 is the second most ever recorded in a match by an Exeter player. We had more difficulty defensively behind the block, and couldn't dig the harder hits as well as we needed to. Offensively, we hit more consistently than in our previous matches, avoided the block well, but couldn't find holes in the Deerfield defense. Willa Cockshutt led the day serving, with 18 points. We played well in this long uptempo match. We've now taken 3 of the best teams in the league to deciding games, but we need to find the key to putting us over the top.Submitted by Coach SaltmanGame Stats
