Girls Ice Hockey: 2008 Season Roundup

On the attack against Tilton this past January.

Overall Record: 14 – 8 – 1

The girl's varsity ice hockey team had many memorable moments this season. First and foremost, the team improved their overall record and drastically reduced their numbers of losses this year. Newcomers Cristina Bravi '10, Lisa Marshall '10, Cara Jankowski '11 and Katie Sullivan '11 all contributed in the first game of the season. Bravi and Sullivan each had a pair of goals, Jankowski added an assist, and Lisa Marshall recorded a shut-out in her first career start for the Big Red.

On December 8, the girls beat powerhouse Cushing Academy 2-1, despite being out-shot 42 to 17. Lauren Greer '09 tallied both goals and new lower, Shannon O'Reilly, recorded her first assist from the point.

Our game against BB&N would become perhaps the most memorable games for Lauren Greer and Cristina Bravi.  For the first time in school history, both Greer and Bravi recorded "natural hat-tricks," each scoring three goals in a row to ensure a 6-3 victory.

As the season wore on, it was certain the five defense-women Madison Gilmore '08, Chelsea Brewer '10, Allison Franklin '09, Rebecca Snelling '08, and Shannon O'Reilly '10 held strong. This was evident in the mid-season 1-1 tie with Deerfield, which was a true nail-biter to the end.

Perhaps most memorable for the seniors was the 2-0 win over Andover on January 30. This was the first win the Big Red had against Andover in the last twelve encounters.

On Senior Day, Lydia Bolander '08 had her first shut-out of the year, stopping all 23 shots NMH threw at her. Casey Waugh '10 added her first assist and senior Emily Scharff had a remarkable game. Emily received a slashing penalty on the goalie late in the third period, but she did not let her time in the box affect her determination to score. As soon as her penalty was over, she jumped over the boards, where Shannon O'Reilly hit her with a perfect pass. Emily skated down the ice with 45 seconds remaining in the game and shot the puck past the goalie to tally the last goal of the game and her first goal and point of the season.

Senior Keely Covo and Upper Kate Cunningham combined for a total of 28 points this season. Liz Dethy '11, Lily White '09, and Kiley Yeakel '10 proved they were the workhorses of the team. Upper Kat Pettengill bounced back from knee surgery early in the season and saw action in seven games this year.  Lauren Greer had the most points this season ending with 26 goals and 11 assists.

The team would like to thank Coach Young for helping coach this season and Julia Millstein for managing the team. Finally, a special thanks to Mariah Napolitano '09 who tore her ACL in the fall, but never missed a hockey game this winter. She was a huge help with keeping stats and did a remarkable job writing the game summaries. The team hopes she continues to recover well and cannot wait for her return next winter.
