Wrestling: 2009 Season Roundup
The varsity wrestling team saw a lot of new faces in the varsity lineup this winter, and steadily improved to finish the season 13-5. Regular season highlights included:
- A 36-30 win over Deerfield
- A 41-30 win over St. Paul's School
- An exciting win over Tabor Academy where Exeter scored the last 18 points of the meet to win 39-38.
Several Exeter wrestlers had outstanding individual seasons led by seniors Rafi Frankfurter, Rumaan Malhotra, Colin Doherty, John Neff, John Azubuike and Co-captains Paul Nagao and Evan Connors. These six seniors were the backbone of the team finishing the regular season with a combined record of 88-22.
Exeter Placed 8 wrestlers at the Class A Wrestling Championships where Michael Mocco placed 6th, Dean Walsh, James Gregory, and Paul Nagao placed 5th, John Neff placed 4th, Colin Doherty placed 3rd, John Azubuike placed 2nd, and Evan Connors was the Champion of his weight division.
Five wrestlers advanced to the All New England Tournament where Paul Nagao went 4-2 to place 5th and Evan Connors again won all 4 of his matches to win an individual New England title. Evan also earned All America status when he placed 5th at the prep national tournament at Lehigh University. To show how dominant Evan was in New England this year, he had a perfect 20-0 record and only had 5 matches that went the entire 6 minutes. Congratulations to Evan and the entire team for your success this season.
No captains elected for next year at this point.
