Boys Crew: 2009 Season Roundup
At the outset of the season, the boys varsity Crew team developed the goal to row the best races of the year at the New England Championships on May 23, and this is exactly what came to pass. With leadership from co-captains Alex Manfull and Andrew Weinstein, the team never raced two weeks with the same line-ups.
In the 20 years that Coach Smith has coached the PEA varsity Crew, there have only been three novices to make the first boat; this year there were two: prep Avery Reavill and lower Frankie Aiello. Ryan Jones was the only rower back from last year's New England champion crew, and provided experience in the middle of the boat.
Seeded ninth at the Interschols, the first boat was in a heat of two to qualify with the third and fourth seeds. After the race was over, no clear winner had been determined. As a result, the judges went to a photo finish and decided that PEA finished third, .6 seconds behind the winner and .2 seconds behind the second place crew, relegating them to the Petite Finals in the afternoon for crews 7 - 12, which Exeter won.
Members of the First Boat were coxswain Alex Manfull, Andrew Weinstein, Frankie Aiello, Ryan Jones, Kasey Colander, Avery Reavill, Josh Sans and Sam Morris.
The second boat likewise had to come together in the last minute. In the last two weeks of the season, so many changes were made between the two varsity crews that the heats at the New England's were the first time down the course with these line-ups. Moving fairly easily into the afternoon finals, the crew had a strong row and finished fourth, .3 seconds out of the medals. The second boat was comprised of: coxswain Julia Millstein, John Gorman, Paul Nagao, Seth Hildick-Smith, George Bryant, Ben Chick, Ian Tibbetts, Connor Gilbert and Gar Ditz.
