Green Building

Construction with Sustainability in Mind

Faculty Houses
Two new faculty houses were constructed using "green" design.

Design and construction for the new houses include:
• Reduction in utility consumption by 50%;
• Elimination of the use of fossil fuels for heat supply;
• Use of environmentally friendly and local building materials and reducing waste;
• Creation of an energy mindset change while maintaining comfort, health and durability;
• Use of low maintenance systems and materials with longer life spans;
• Incorporation of the design principles as a real-world example for the environmental education curriculum

Phelps Academy Center LEED-ing the Way
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a program of the U.S. Green Building Council that sets standards for "green" or sustainable buildings.  It is a recognition of meeting certain objectives in the design and construction of facilities that promote environmental stewardship and energy conservation. The Phelps Academy Center is one of only a few LEED certified buildings in New Hampshire. As such, the building represents Exeter's ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility.

LEED facts:
• 96% of waste that was produced on the Academy Center's construction site was recycled
• 13% of the material used was recycled
• Whenever possible, natural light was incorporated in the building's design to save electricity
• Rainwater is collected into a cistern, which is then used for irrigation on campus
