Measures of Excellence

Twenty-six Exeter seniors have been named candidates for the United States Presidential Scholars Program. This number represents fully one percent of the total selected nationwide and is the highest number in Academy history. Recipients include: Dede Addy, Amanda Angel, Alexander Brant-Zawadzki, Jody Clements, Alexandra Diaz-Almaral, Jeremy England, Lisa Gammon, Alysoun Kegel, Daniel Kim, Sydney Lu, Evan Lushing, Christina Mair, Sarah Muller, Adam Nebesar, Matthew Pisanelli, Heather Powell, Brandon Reynolds, Robert Richardson, Christopher Rovzar, Irvin Sha, Patrick Shum, Alan Sull, Morgan Tingley, Susan Trenbath, Trent Ward, and Shouhwei You. Presidential Scholars are chosen on the basis of their academic and artistic success, leadership, and involvement in school and the community. President Lyndon Johnson established the program in 1964, which annually selects up to 141 graduating seniors for the honor.

Jeremy England ’99 of Durham, New Hampshire, was one of only 300 high school students nationwide named a semifinalist in the 58th Annual Intel Science Talent Search. Known since 1942 as the Westinghouse Science Talent Search, the competition, which seeks to discover and encourage high school students who demonstrate exceptional ability in science and engineering, is now sponsored by the Intel Corporation. England’s project explored stabilization and release effects of Pluronic F127 in Protein Drug Delivery.

Two Academy instructors will join a select group of teachers listed in the fifth edition (1998) of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers: Peter Greer, who has been an English instructor at the Academy since 1968, and Lewis Hitzrot, who has taught science at Exeter since 1974. Teachers are chosen based on the nomination of former students, themselves listed among the Who’s Who of American High School Students, as people who had made a difference in their lives by inspiring interest in a particular subject or challenging them to strive for excellence.

News from the College Counseling Office

The College Counseling Office reports that early decision/early admit numbers are up for this year’s senior class. Among graduating seniors, there has been a nationwide trend in recent years to take advantage of colleges’ early decision/admit programs. According to Thomas Hassan, dean of admissions and college counseling, 46 percent of this year’s Exeter seniors took this route, compared to 30 percent 10 years ago. Fully half of those who applied early have been accepted.

Exonians Support Local Homeless Population

More than 100 people from the town and Academy joined in the 10th annual Candlelight Vigil for the Homeless on January 27. Participants start a candlelight procession at the Exeter High School and walk down Front Street past the Academy to the town hall, where the event culminates with singing and a check presentation to Rockingham Community Action, which operates the local shelter. Speaking in faculty meeting, Director of Student Activities Barbara James reported that Exeter faculty contributed over $2,500 of the $6,700 total raised this year, the largest total ever. James, who spearheads the annual effort, also thanked Rev. Thompson, Music Instructor Eric Sinclair, Choir Director Steve Kushner and the Academy Concert Choir, Winterfest Committee Chair Jan Trueman, Associate Director of College Counseling Linda Haskins, and Student Activities Associate Director Joanne Lembo for helping to make this year’s Homeless Vigil such a success.
