Treasures of the Baltic Aboard 'Sea Cloud II' June 19 to July 2, 2003

Exeter alumni/ae and friends are invited to explore the medieval towns and splendid northern capitals of the Baltic Sea on a midsummer cruise aboard the sailing yacht Sea Cloud II, a luxurious three-masted barque outfitted in classical elegance and with modern amenities. Russian specialist Ambassador Charles T. Magee, former U.S. Consul General in St. Petersburg, will be the distinguished lecturer on the trip. Dr. Helen C. Evans, curator of medieval art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will be guest lecturer.

The trip begins in Copenhagen with two days of excursions to historic landmarks and important art collections before setting sail for St. Petersburg, Russia. The ship will stop at Visby, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the island of Gotland, before sailing on to Stockholm via an immense archipelago that is a scenic delight for entering vessels. Other stops include Mariehamn, capital of the Åland Islands in Finland; Helsinki; and Tallinn, Estonia, a lovely capital city undergoing a remarkable restoration. The voyage ends with a day in St. Petersburg spent touring the Hermitage Museum, which will open early by special arrangement, and other important sites, and a farewell dinner aboard Sea Cloud II. An optional three-day postlude in St. Petersburg, with accommodations at the Grand Hotel Europe, is available for those who want to spend more time in this magnificent city.

This voyage, cosponsored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and North Carolina Museum of Art, will bring together 75 travelers with similar interests. For more information, contact Harold Brown, director of alumni/ae affairs, at (603) 777-3353 or hbrown@exeter.edu.
