Phillips Exeter Academy Hosts Concert Choir and Chamber Orchestra's Return Performance Following Their Canadian Tour

Exeter, NH (March 21, 2011)—The Phillips Exeter Academy Concert Choir and Chamber Orchestra will perform their Canadian Tour Program this weekend for the PEA and Seacoast communities with works by American composers Stephen Paulus, Eric Whitacre, Damon Dandridge and Craig Hella Johnson, as well as selections by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Francis Poulenc and Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky, among others.

The ensembles recently returned from a five-day tour to Canada which included performances in Montreal, Quebec City, and on the island of Îles-aux-Coudres in the Charlevoix region of Quebec. The performance will be held Sunday, March 27, 2011, 4 p.m., at Phillips Church, located on the corner of Tan Lane and Front Street. The concert is free and open to the public. 

The concert will open with Mozart's Veni Sancte Spiritus, KV 47; followed by Finzi's My Spirit Sang All Day; The Road Home, arranged by Paulus; i will wade out, by Whitacre; Eliza Gilkyson's Requiem, arranged by Hella Johnson and conducted by the Music Department's choral intern, Mollie Birney; and Dandridge's I Know I've Been Changed. The concert continues with Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings in C major, Op. 48; Five Hebrew Love Songs, by Whitacre, accompanied by a student string quartet: In Young Cho '11 and Ingrid C. Chen '11, violins; Dana Huh '12, viola; and Ted J. Lee '11, cello. The program closes with Aaron Copland's The Promise of Living, from The Tender Land.

The PEA Concert Choir and Chamber Orchestra includes 51 PEA students from over 17 states and eight different countries. The Concert Choir will be conducted by PEA Music Instructor Ryan Turner; and the Chamber Orchestra will be led by Music Instructors Peter Schultz and Department Chair Rohan Smith.
