Through Student Eyes: "Girls Ice Hockey Team Gets Creative with Relay for Life" by Emily Scharff '08

Members of the girls hockey team at Relay for Life

On Saturday, April 12, the girls varsity hockey team came together to participate in Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society sponsored by ESSO and the Student Activities Department. Hockey team members took turns walking around Love Gym, and set up a game booth to raise money for the cause.

Our Relay for Life team captain, Casey '10, says, "We chose to do Relay for Life because it was a fundraiser that we could get creative with as a team. We integrated hockey into our booth activity." Casey felt that "bonding as a team before and after games really set the tone for this winter's season. Coming together again for Relay for Life allowed us to reconnect away from our busy schedules."

The Relay for Life motto is: "Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back." PEA's Relay was a time to celebrate and honor those who have survived cancer; remember those who were lost to the disease; and fight back by raising the necessary money to support further cancer research, education and services. The American Cancer Society's website states that, "Relay isn't about taking laps – it's about coming together in the fight against cancer."

Prior to the event, Casey planned meetings, including team dinners, to brainstorm ideas for the booth. We ended up organizing "Hockey Jeopardy" with different categories such as team members' nicknames, hockey regulations and Canadian hockey trivia. As prizes, we offered jellybeans, cookies and CDs of the team's favorite music.

Upper Mariah comments, "Casey was a good leader – she did a great job organizing, motivating and energizing the team to help raise money for this important organization."

Relay for Life helped our already close-knit hockey team become even closer. We have all undoubtedly been touched by cancer in some way. Relay let us share stories and bond.

Upper Lily expressed her feelings, which are shared by the rest of the team, "It was really fun! It was great to spend time with the team after the season and it was for a good cause."

Overall, Relay for Life was a successful event. The team and I were happy to support the valiant efforts of the American Cancer Society and help make a difference for cancer patients.

Lion's Note: PEA's Relay for Life was a tremendous success this year due to the efforts of more than 350 students, and over 35 faculty and staff. The American Cancer Society received $6,400 from the event.
