GV Soccer: 2011 Season Roundup

2-1 win vs. Governor's on Oct. 5, 2011

January 11, 2012

Overall Record: 15 W - 4 L

This last fall, 16 soccer players found themselves together in early September. Ten seniors had graduated the year before. In goal was a girl named Naomi who had never intended to become the goalie but had committed to the position because her team needed her to. We had 2 new defenders and a very young midfield. Everyone was worried that this year would be a year filled with struggle and disappointment. And then they won a game. And another. And lost one by a whisker to a good team. And continued to win until, before they knew it, they had taken themselves all the way to the New England Tournament.

They did it with strong defense anchored by Darby Henry and Lauren Boulger and Sammi deJong and Brooke Goddard who only allowed 10 goals all season. They paired that with a potent offense where Martha Griffin, Dani Sim and Victoria Triana were constant threats earning many of the 40 goals the team scored this season.

And  for the first round of the New England Tournament, in the pouring rain, they shocked an undefeated Nobles team 1-0. They then took on another undefeated team from Worcester. That game saw Darby Henry score with just 2 minutes left in the game to put it into overtime. They battled evenly  all the way through 2 overtimes and ended up losing by just 1 point in penalty kicks.  It was a weird mix of disappointment and satisfaction for this team. A truly remarkable year from a group of kids who, on paper, never should have gotten that far. It is the epitome of sport to see what is deep inside come out when teammates are counting on you!
