Phillips Exeter Academy Library Summer Concert Series Hosts Faculty Chamber Music Concert

Exeter, NH—Phillips Exeter Academy's Library Summer Concert Series will host its second event this year with a Faculty Chamber Music Concert; a performance by Deborah Boykan, violin, Colleen McGary-Smith, cello and Eunyoung Kim, piano. The trio's concert will include classical works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Dmitri Shostakovich and Clara Schumann. Hosted by the Friends of the Academy Library of Phillips Exeter Academy, the concert will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 7 p.m. in the Class of 1945 Library's Rockefeller Hall, located on Front Street. The event is free and open to the public.

Boykan is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Oberlin College. She teaches violin, viola and chamber music privately and as an adjunct music instructor at Phillips Exeter Academy.

A former member of the Basel Sinfonietta (Basel, Switzerland), Boykan has performed with the Boston Pops Orchestra, Boston Ballet Orchestra, Opera Boston, Boston Lyric Opera Orchestra, Emmanuel Music, and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, among other ensembles throughout New England. She has also performed and/or toured with Aerosmith, Sarah Brightman, Björk, Judy Collins, The Irish Tenors, k.d. lang, Liza Minnelli, and many other well-known musicians. Boykan is the recipient of a Guggenheim Foundation student fellowship to Venice, Italy, and two Massachusetts Arts Lottery/NEA Grants for chamber music recitals.

Cellist McGary-Smith is a very active performer on both modern and baroque cello as well as viola da gamba. She began her cello studies at the age of 5 in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada; and her pre-college studies at the Eastman School of Music, Preparatory Department. McGary-Smith received her degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and Boston University. She currently performs with Boston Baroque, Handel and Haydn Society, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston, L'Académie, Trio21 and other freelance ensembles in the Boston area. Her past performances were with the Columbus Symphony, Erie Philharmonic, Canton Symphony, Washington Bach Consort and The Cleveland Camerata.
 
An avid educator, McGary-Smith currently teaches at The Concord Conservatory of Music (Concord, MA). She resides in Maynard, MA.

Pianist Eunyoung Kim, a virtuoso soloist and chamber musician, has performed in many concerts in her native Korea. She has also performed in the U.S. and Japan with organizations including the Brockton Symphony Orchestra, International Soroptimist, International Contemporary Music Ensemble Musica Anatolia, Fifth Tier New Music Ensemble, La Scena and Stratus Ensemble.

Kim received degrees from the Korea National University of Arts, Boston University and Longy School of Music. In her post-academic career, Kim was awarded prizes in both 2005 and 2006 in the International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition. She was awarded the third prize in the Hugo Kauder Society's International Music Competition for Piano in 2008, and the Gladys Cauthen Award from the International Beethoven Piano Sonata Competition in Memphis in 2009.
