A PEAN to the Beehive

This year's yearbook, the PEAN, celebrates the image of the beehive – home to bees flitting to nearby flowers and trees, and a key component of Exeter's seal. The PEAN interprets the beehive as symbolic of the community that is Exeter, with the bees – symbols of industrious scholars, according to tradition – representing members working together in the community. The PEAN's cover sports a debossed (reverse of embossed) seal, with the beehive and bees in gold foil. 

Here's the Editors' Letter from PEAN Editors-in-Chief Caitlin Foster '12 and Shinri Kamei '12:

"The image of the beehive holds an important place on the Academy crest and figures prominently in the 2012 PEAN. A beehive flourishes only when each bee provides its unique contribution of nectar; thereafter, the bees join as one to convert that nectar into honey. The hive – whether the Harkness table or Love Gym, Elm Street or Las Olas – is the transformative context in which the community gathers and flourishes.

As members of the Class of 2012 reflect on our time spent at Exeter, we notice not only our personal transformations, but the development of both our class and the school as a whole. We entered as individuals eager and ready to learn and, through work done together, we evolved into a dynamic senior class, ready to move on to the next phase. Without every member of this community, we would not have experienced the growth that has prepared us for our departure.

Our hope is that for years to come, this book will evoke the fact that, once upon a time, these 1800 individuals – students, staff, faculty – helped us become who we are."

There's more reason for exceptional buzz around this year's PEAN – it won a Gallery of Excellence Award from Walsworth Publishing Co. in Kansas City, MO, publisher of thousands of books annually. "Yearbook staffs seeking a traditional look to their yearbooks will be encouraged to follow the elegant and sophisticated approach used by Phillips Exeter in their 2012 yearbook," writes Alex Blackwell, vice president of Marketing and Communications for Walsworth, in the letter announcing the award. "With more than 230 years of school history, I can't think of another example that better conveys such a classic look and feel of a yearbook."

The PEAN also qualified for Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approval this year, a rigorous process that requires FSC certification at the forest, paper-manufacturing, merchant and printing level. The PEAN proudly displays the FSC logo on its last page.

To celebrate the arrival of the 2012 PEAN, Foster, Kamei and two advisors – Modern Languages Instructor Evelyn Christoph and Math Instructor Joe Wolfson – traveled to Missouri to watch as the book came off the Walsworth presses.
