Exeter, NH (October 31, 2008)—On Tuesday, November 11, 7:00 p.m., Phillips Exeter Academy will present a concert by international pianist Gabriel Chodos, who will perform in Phillips Church, located on the corner of Front Street and Tan Lane. The concert is free and open to the public.
Gabriel Chodos has performed throughout the United States, Europe, Israel and Japan. He has been a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Aspen Chamber Orchestra, the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra of Holland, and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra.
Early in his career, Chodos received national recognition as a Fulbright scholar and a prizewinner in both the Concert Artists Guild auditions and the Michaels competition. More recently, he has been awarded Martha Baird Rockefeller grants and a Solo Recitalist grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Chodos has performed at Alice Tully Hall, the 92nd Street Y, Symphony Hall, Merkin Hall and the Library of Congress. He has given master classes at the Chautauqua Festival, the Rutgers Summerfest, the Hochschule für Musik in Leipzig, Toho Conservatory and Kunitachi Music University. His performances of works by Schubert, Chopin and Brahms have been broadcast nationwide by National Public Radio.
Chodos’ principal teacher was Aube Tzerko, a pupil of Schnabel. He earned a bachelor’s in philosophy, and a master’s in music from the University of California at Los Angeles; and a diploma in piano from the Akademie fur Musik and darstellende Kunst in Vienna. Chodos has served on the faculties of the University of Oregon, the State University of New York at Buffalo and Dartmouth College. Currently, he is a member of the artist faculties of the New England Conservatory and the Aspen Music Festival.
This year’s performance will include Beethoven’s Sonata in B-flat major, Op. 106 (“Hammerklavier”). The evening’s program:
