About the Artists

Violinist Paul MacDowell has been an adjunct music faculty member at Phillips Exeter Academy since 1991.  Since receiving an M.M. in Violin Performance from Boston University, he has been active in New England, playing with groups as varied as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Aerosmith.  He is currently a member of the Boston Ballet Orchestra and has appeared with Boston Pops, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Boston Opera.  He has also been active as a recitalist and chamber music performer throughout New England.

Pianist Arlene Kies is currently on the faculty of the University of New Hampshire, and has also taught at Tufts University and Phillips Exeter Academy.  A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music (BM,MM, with honors) she has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Frye Fellowship for an Outstanding Pianist at NEC, a Fulbright Fellowship for study in Vienna, and a New Hampshire State Council of the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship.  Arlene lives in Durham, New Hampshire, with her husband, composer/pianist Christopher Kies.  Their three daughters are graduates of PEA (Antonietta ’02, Marianne ’04, and Charlotte ’08).
