Exeter, NH (June 16, 2009)—Scarsdale, NY, resident David B Rush ’09, was named one of the highest-ranking winners in this year’s U.S. Mathematics Olympiad (USAMO). Rush, a recent graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, was among more than 220,000 high school students who competed in a series of challenging contests which culminated with the USAMO exam. The top 12 USAMO winners were honored this week at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Rush is now attending the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSP)—a three-week, invitation-only training camp that challenges the top scorers to take the rigorous Team Selection Test (TST) to try and qualify for a seat on the U.S. team, which will compete in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), to be held in Bremen, Germany, July 10-22. The combined TST and USAMO scores will determine which six students will compete in the IMO.
The USAMO is a six-question, two-day, nine-hour essay/proof examination held in April. All problems can be solved using pre-calculus methods. Approximately 500 of the top-scoring American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) participants are invited to take the USAMO. Participants who qualified for the USAMO earlier this year competed in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) against 10,000 students, who were among the highest 1-5 percent scorers who took the American Mathematics Contest. The USAMO is supported by a variety of mathematical enthusiast organizations, including the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
