"Bugs, Planes and Ferris Wheels" – Math Teachers Co-Author Journal Article
Wednesday, February 1, 2006
William E. Campbell, Joyce C. Kemp and Joan H. Zia have authored an article that appears in the February, 2006 issue of the journal Mathematics Teacher. The article describes a problem-centered curriculum for grades 9-12, which uses problem sets developed by PEA's mathematics department designed to take the place of textbooks. By working these problem sets and discussing them around the table, students discover mathematical concepts in the context of the problems and activities in the materials, in keeping with Exeter's Harkness teaching philosophy.
Mathematics Teacher offers activities, lesson ideas, teaching strategies and problems through in-depth articles. Approximately 50,000 individuals and institutions receive copies of the journal. Only a small portion of the manuscripts received by the journal are accepted for publication by its Editorial Panel, following a rigorous review by a sample of secondary teachers, two-year college instructors, university mathematicians and mathematics educators.
