“The Virtues of Violence: The Amphitheatre, Gladiators, and the Roman System of Values”

Exeter, NH (March 29, 2006)—On Friday, April 7, at 8 p.m., the Phillips Exeter Academy Department of Classical Languages will present a talk and slide show by Harvard Professor Kathleen Coleman entitled “The Virtues of Violence: The Amphitheatre, Gladiators, and the Roman System of Values.” The presentation will be held at the Assembly Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
Professor Coleman is an expert on the Roman system of values and was one of the consultants for the blockbuster Hollywood film, Gladiator. Her dynamic presentation will appeal not only to history and classics scholars, but also to anyone interested in the ancient world. Her talk will be accompanied by slides of Rome and Pompeii, ancient artwork, mosaics and architectural remains.
