Academy Students Win U. S. Mathematics Olympiad
Academy Math Team members Ryan Ko 06, Sherry Gong 07 and Yi Han 08 earned winning scores in the United States of America Mathematics Olympiad (USAMO) held earlier this month. Kevin Modzelewski 06 received an honorable mention. No other school produced multiple winners in this year's competition.
The USAMO is a six question, two-day, nine hour essay/proof examination. All problems can be solved using pre-calculus methods. The 12 winners competed against 450 US Olympiad participants. Participants qualified for the USAMO in March when they competed against 12,000 students on the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME.) Those 12,000 students had been culled from a field of 400,000 during the American Mathematics Competition in February.
The USAMO winners will go on to take a Team Selection Test (TST.) The combined TST and USAMO scores will determine the six members of the USA team, which will compete in the International Mathematics Olympiad to be held in Slovenia in July.
The Academy Math Team is coached by math teacher Zuming Feng.
