Arthur Budington, B.S., M.S., Part-Time Instructor in Science - Art comes to Exeter from Nichols School in Buffalo, NY, where for 35 years he taught a variety of science courses, including both regular and AP physics and chemistry, AP biology, earth science and geology. For 15 of those years, he served as department chair. Art also participated in the first Exeter teacher’s conference on secondary school science education in 1980, and has been recognized for his work in mycology by designation of a fungus known as Hyphoderma Budingtonii. He is the recipient of the Olive Ringo Teaching and the Tandy Technology
Scholar awards.
Kenney Chan, B.S., M.Ed., Instructor in Computer Science - Kenney studied computer science at Cornell University and graduated in 1985. This year, he earned a master’s of education degree in technology, innovation and education from Harvard University. Since 2003, he has served in a variety of administrative positions with the Touchstone Community School in Grafton, MA. Additionally, he has more than 20 years experience working as a software engineer and consultant for corporate and research companies in the computer science industry in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Erik Janicki, B.A., M.S., Instructor in Science - Erik returns full time this year after teaching part time at Exeter during the 2006 winter term. He studied biology at Colby College; attended the Klingenstein Summer Institute offered by Columbia University’s Teachers College; and earned a master’s degree in microbiology from the University of New Hampshire. While at Colby, Erik studied environmental issues and worked on a reforestation project for one year in Ecuador. Afterwards, he taught biology and ecology at Gould Academy in Maine, and managed the school’s farm, which includes Holstein oxen, sheep, goats, turkeys and hens. At Raymond (NH) High School, Erik managed a teaching fellowship program that paired graduate students and high school science teachers. Since 2002, he has worked as a graduate assistant at UNH, teaching microbiology.
J. Albert Leger, B.A., M.A., M.Sc., Ph.D., Instructor in Science - Albert studied geology and earth sciences at Harvard and the University of New Brunswick, and then completed a doctoral program in earth sciences at Johns Hopkins University. He researched metamorphic petrology at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, and later served as a curator with the Museum of Natural History in New York. Albert also taught biology and chemistry at Montclair Kimberley Academy in New Jersey, and the Hopkins School in Connecticut, where he was head of the science department and Dean of Faculty, before joining the Exeter faculty.
Gabriela Martinez, B.A., M.A., Ph.D., Part Time Instructor in Science - Gabriela studied biology and earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Mount Holyoke College and Bryn Mawr College, respectively. In 2004, she completed a doctoral program in zoology at the University of New Hampshire.
Since 1995, Gabriela has worked as a consultant to the Coastal Conservation Association of New Hampshire. She has also worked as a research assistant at Mount Holyoke, Philadelphia’s Children’s Hospital, and UNH. In 1999, Gabriela joined the UNH zoology department, working as a teaching assistant and adjunct faculty member.
Beth O'Grady, B.S., M.Ed., Instructor in Science (Chemistry) - After completing her master’s at the University of Lowell in Massachusetts, Beth taught chemistry at Exeter from 1989 – 1995. She then moved to upstate New York and joined the faculty of Cambridge Central School where she taught chemistry and earth science. Most recently, Beth worked as an enrichment teacher at Cambridge and Schuylerville Central Schools, developing curriculum and teaching math, science and enrichment classes for gifted elementary school students.
Ruth Wahl, B.S., M.A., Instructor in Science (Physics) - Ruth comes to Exeter following 30 years of teaching science in the United States and Africa. After joining the Peace Corps in 1974, she taught physics and math at the Githumu Secondary and the Kenya High Schools for three years. Uponreturning to the United States, she taught algebra II and geometry at Cypress Lake High School in Fort Myers, FL for two years. In 1980, she began teaching physics, computer programming and physical science at Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, VA, where she also served as chair of the middle and upper school science department. While there, she was named the Virginia Jr. Academy of Science Teacher of the Year in 1983. In 1993, Ruth joined the faculty at the New Hampton School, at New Hampton, NH, serving as the assistant academic dean and science department head. She is a member of Sigma Pi Sigma physics honor society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, and the National Science Teachers Association.
Kelly McQuighan, B.A., Teaching Fellow in Science - Kelly graduated this year from Rice University in Houston, TX, with a major in physics. During summers, she worked as a teaching intern at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for Ultracold Atoms; a research fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology; an intern at the Environmental Protection Agency; and a teaching assistant in the physics department at Rice.
