Sneeden, English instructor, publishes poems in Slate, POETRY and Tiferet

Ralph Sneeden

Ralph Sneeden, instructor in the English department since 1995, has recently published poems in a variety of publications:

• "Banish Misfortune" in Slate (posted September 5, 2006; hear the author read his poem)
• "Horns Unknown" in POETRY (June 2006)
• "The People in the Story" in Tiferet (v. 2, Issue 1)

In his online review, Ted Burke praises Sneeden's mastery: "'Banish Misfortune' by Ralph Sneeden is a sweeping yet brief piece of music, a sweet and surely constructed composition that amazingly gives off the air of swift and sure improvisation. It is, I think, the poem of a poet with that well tuned ear that senses the balance of language as it unfolds on the page during the writing and who is able to sense how it will sound when spoken. The aspect I enjoy is that the language is almost impenetrable, a series of concentrated images that elide into one another in what can be described as an entranced narrator's soft murmuring description."

Forthcoming works by Sneeden include:

• "Peconic" in Hayden's Ferry Review (Arizona State University) (Issue #39)
• "Interior with a Violin Case" and "Photojournalism" in DoubleTake/Points of Entry Magazine

See these other recent writings by Sneeden:

• "Estuarine" (January 2005), "No River Road" and "Double Nocturne" (February 2004) in POETRY
• "High Ranking Fugitive" in The New Republic (posted January 23, 2004)
• "Bridge" in In Posse

Sneeden is also the author of Evidence of the Journey, a collection of poems. The title poem in this collection received the Friends of Literature Prize from POETRY in 2004. In addition to the publications mentioned above, Sneeden's work has appeared in The Kenyon Review, New England Review, Ploughshares, Southern Review and TriQuarterly.
