September 8, 2010

Exeter, NH (September 8, 2010)—Two female students from Phillips Exeter Academy earned gold and bronze medals at the 2010 China Girls Mathematics Olympiad (CGMO) last month in Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei Province, China. The ninth annual competition included two difficult days and was sponsored by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, IBM Research – Akamai Foundation, the Mathematical Association of America, the Sunlin and Priscilla Chou Foundation, and the Science Workshop. This was the U.S. team's fourth year of competing.

Rising seniors Adisa Kruayatidee of Exeter and Shijie "Joy" Zheng, of Bellevue, WA, were two of 190 girls from 10 countries who competed amongst 48 individual teams. Zheng earned a gold medal, scoring more than 83 points; Kruayatidee scored above 45 points, earning a bronze medal.

The U.S. team consisted of eight high school girls selected from the top female finalists in the 2010 USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO). The team's head coach, Zuming Feng, a PEA math instructor and leader of the USA International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) team, has directed the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSP) since 2003. Feng says he's very proud of the team's accomplishments. Sherry Gong '07, member of the 2007 USAMO and 2007 Girls Mathematical Olympiad (GMO) teams, continued her support of PEA and CGMO by serving as an assistant coach.

Founded in 2002, the CGMO began as a regional competition for teams of female students from China and other eastern Asia countries (plus those from Russia). The competition was later expanded to other countries, including the USA, Canada, South Africa and Australia.
