Faculty Recital: Folk Traditions

Ryan Thomson is a folk music multi-instrumentalist and has been a member of the Academy faculty for 19 years. His performance will include traditional ethnic folk tunes of Scottish, French, Irish, English, and Southern Appalachian origin, played on violin, wooden flute, banjo, pennywhistle, and accordion. He will perform jigs, two steps, reels, hornpipes, waltzes, slip jigs, aires, and more.
Mr. Thomson is a designated Master Traditional Artist on the roster of the New Hampshire Council on the Arts, and is a past winner of the Northeastern USA regional award at the National Fiddle Contest. Among his favorite folk instruments and ethnic music making styles are dance fiddling, Celtic wooden flute, Cajun accordion, pennywhistle, and old time clawhammer banjo. He has published numerous instructional books and videos for folk instruments and recently won a grant from the New Hampshire State Council of the Arts to study traditional fiddling. He has participated in the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes for the past 30 years where he collaborates with master fiddlers from around the world.
