Parents' Weekend Starts Today
October 12, 2007
Concert Choir's open rehearsal was one of several events to kick off the weekend
Welcome to all family members and friends who have come to campus to learn firsthand about life and learning at Exeter. In classic New England style, today's rainy weather promises to change to sun and mild temperatures over the weekend. While planning your activities, check out the Parents' Weekend Program of Events. Got questions? The Information Center located in the Phelps Science Center (Grainger Auditorium) can help you out. Check out the campus online map for helpful information.
Here are a few of the weekend's highlights:
- Learn what Harkness is all about – join in classroom discussions with faculty and other parents, and hear presentations from faculty. Topics include: "Writing at Exeter," "Rethinking History for the 21st Century," "How We Teach Math at Exeter" and "Reading, Writing and Discussing." You'll also have the chance to learn about Exeter's many foreign language and culture programs abroad.
- Meet college counselors – attend an open house or listen to speakers on the topic of selecting and applying to college.
- Watch your student play sports – Northfield Mount Hermon's teams are on campus Saturday for match-ups in cross-country, field hockey, football, soccer, volleyball and water polo.
- Watch student theater and dance ensembles – Shakespeare, dance, theater games and more performed at Fisher Theater.
- Feed your non sibi urge by contributing to the "Empty Bowls – Art for Social Action" program – purchase a wheel-thrown bowl, made by a ceramics student, in the dining hall. Your contribution goes to Cross Roads House, a transition shelter in Portsmouth, NH, where ESSO students volunteer.
- Take a guided tour of the Class of 1945 Library – learn about the award-winning library and the history of the school.
- Stargaze at Grainger Observatory – Friday nights at the observatory are a tradition. Be part of it this weekend, weather permitting.
And there's lots more, including self-guided tours of the Phelps Academy Center, visits to the new exhibition at Lamont Gallery and even activities for younger siblings.
