Message from Dr. Citrin Regarding Skin Infections Caused by MRSA

Thursday, October 25, 2007

To the PEA Community and PEA Parents:

I have had a few questions lately concerning skin infections caused by Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). This disease is not new, and our medical and athletic training staff has been aware of it for years. However, it has recently received quite a bit of media attention.

I would like to assure you that here at Exeter, we have been aware of this issue for several years, and have been using proper antibacterial cleansing products. This is true in all Academy facilities and buildings. However, special attention has been paid to our athletic complex and training room, as MRSA has most often been contracted during sports such as football and wrestling.

PEA is doing everything reasonable to both prevent an incident of MRSA, and to recognize any potential cases by prudent care and immediate referral to our Health Center for appropriate treatment.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers these tips for prevention of MRSA infections:

• Keep hands clean by washing with soap and water, or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
• Keep cuts and scrapes clean and bandaged.
• Avoid contact with others’ wounds or bandages.
• Avoid sharing personal items like towels, razors, or uniforms.
