Exeter, NH (November 6, 2007)—On Sunday, November 11, 2007, more than two dozen area jazz musicians and performers will pay tribute to renowned bassist and jazz creator, Jim Howe, in a memorial concert at Phillips Exeter Academy. The concert will be held in Phillips Church on Tan Lane and is free and open to the public.

Howe, co-founder of the Tommy Gallant Trio, began playing the upright bass as a youth and played in local jazz groups throughout high school. He studied music at the University of Maine in Orono while performing with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. After college, Howe played with local bands and orchestras and later taught high school band and music in Manchester, NH. After the death of Gallant, he formed the Jim Howe Trio to continue his legacy. Howe also became the creator and director of “Sunday Night Jazz” at the Press Room in Portsmouth, NH, which began more than 20 years ago. He was an instructor of music at the University of New Hampshire, the University of Southern Maine and Phillips Exeter Academy. Throughout the years he performed and recorded with many well-known national jazz artists who visited the Seacoast area.
