Winter Study Tour to Oaxaca, Mexico
Join Don Foster, Dr. P. Phillips Professor of Anthropology at Exeter, for this unique study trip. Located 300 miles south of Mexico City, Oaxaca is a colonial city that retains a small-town ambiance. It is surrounded by villages where Zapotec, Mixe and Mixtec languages are still spoken; their markets display all the arts and crafts of this region of the state, including rugs, textiles, wood carvings, pottery and metal work. Foster's long-term perspective on Mexican society, encompassing pre-Hispanic, Spanish colonial and contemporary history of Mexico, provides a unique study experience. Participants will meet some families who have known Don Foster for more than 30 years. This tour is a must for anyone seeking new insights into Mexico's current economic and political challenges and its relationship with the United States. The study tour will begin and end in New York City; tuition is $1,400, including airfare from New York to Oaxaca. This fee does not cover meals. Enrollment is limited to 16 participants, and the application process must be completed by August 31, 2001. For more information or an application form, please call or write Don Foster at Phillips Exeter Academy, 20 Main Street, Exeter, NH, 03833, (603) 777-3452; dfoster@exeter.edu; or Harold Brown '74, director of alumni/ae affairs, at (603) 777-3454; hbrown@exeter.edu.
Save the Date for All alumni/ae volunteers are urged to return to campus during the last week of September to participate in Academy Master Plan discussions that will guide the school's future course. All participants will receive copies of the AMP white paper outlining current challenges and issues; the white paper will serve as the basis for small Harkness discussions, facilitated by faculty and trustees, to be held during Alumni/ae Council Weekend. The weekend will also feature planning sessions for reunions, regional associations, class officers and class fund-raising, as well as Friday night dinner with the senior class. Please save the date now for this important event.
The awards committee of the Exeter trustees seeks nominations on a rolling basis for the Academy's two highest alumni/ae honors, the Founder's Day Award and the John Phillips Award. The Founder's Day Award is given to an alumnus, alumna, faculty emeritus or emerita, retired staff member, parent or friend who has demonstrated exceptional service to the Academy. The service must be extraordinary, beyond what is regularly contributed by others doing similar service, and the nominee must still be living at the time of nomination. Duration of service may be of any length, but should perhaps be of five years or more. The recipient may receive the award only once and should not have previously received the John Phillips Award. The John Phillips Award is given to an alumnus or alumna of the Academy, still living at the time of nomination, whose life demonstrates John Phillips' ideal of goodness and knowledge united in noble character and usefulness to mankind. The nominee should have contributed significantly to the welfare of community, country or humanity, beyond any volunteer service to the Academy. Nomination letters should document with specifics how the nominee meets each award criterion. Supporting documents, news articles or other materials are particularly helpful for the John Phillips Award. Nomination letters should be addressed to Harold Brown '74, director of alumni/ae affairs, Phillips Exeter Academy, 20 Main Street, Exeter, NH 03833, hbrown@exeter.edu. |
