The Teachers

Who are the teachers at the conference?

Jane Cadwell, leader, earned her B.A. from Williams College, her M.A.T. from Smith College and her M.Litt. from Middlebury College. She joined the Exeter English department in 1993. Prior to that, Jane taught at Georgetown Day School in Washington, D.C. At Exeter she teaches grades 9-12 and has coached the boys squash and tennis teams.

Margaret Foley, leader, earned her BA and MAT from Boston University. Originally from St. Paul, Minnesota, Meg came to Exeter in 1999; here she teaches History, senior Economics electives, and serves as assistant coach to the cycling team. Previously, she taught at the Colorado Springs School. For the past several summers, Meg has worked with the Sail Caribbean Program, directing and teaching experiential education and travel programs for teenagers. Meg is the 2005 recipient of the Raymond W. Ellis Instructorship chair at Phillips Exeter Academy. 

Becky Moore, leader, earned her BA and M.Ed from Harvard University. Becky has been a member of the English faculty since 1990. Prior to coming to Exeter, she worked at Choate Rosemary Hall and the Brooks School. She enjoys teaching all levels, coaches girls’ crew, and currently serves as chair of the English Department.  

Lawrence Smith, leader, earned his BA from Princeton and his MA in History from the University of New Hampshire. Lawrence grew up at South Kent School, where he later served as Director of Admissions, history teacher and Dean of Students. His teaching spans a wide of range of courses that extends from Ancient Greece for ninth graders to a senior seminar on the Sixties. He coaches Boys’ Varsity Crew. Lawrence joined the Exeter History Department in 1989, was recently named the Michael Ridder Distinguished Professor of History and is currently department chair.

Ralph Sneeden, leader, earned his BA from the University of Massachusetts, his MA from Middlebury, and his MFA from Warren Wilson College; in ’92-’93 he was a Klingenstein Fellow at Columbia University. Ralph worked at the Pingree School and Lake Forest Academy prior to coming to Exeter in 1995. His poetry has appeared in The Kenyon Review, Ploughshares, Poetry, TriQuarterly, The New England Review, The New Republic, Slate The Southern Review and other magazines. His book of poetry, Evidence of the Journey was published in April 2007 by Harmon Blunt. He has also served on the faculty of the University of Michigan’s Bear River Writers’ Conference.
