Brief Course Description
The MA901A1 Topics in Teaching Mathematical Sciences course is offered at Phillips Exeter Academy’s Anja S. Greer Conference on Secondary School Science, Mathematics, and Technology. The conference dates are June 22 - June 27, 2008. The Conference will explore the mathematics and science curricula of today and tomorrow with special focus on the impact of technology and its application in the classroom. For each participant, the primary focus of the Conference will be two seminar courses. Each seminar course, led by an experienced classroom teacher, will be limited to 12 people and will meet for two hours each day. The goal of the course, through the primary focus of the two seminar courses, is intended to provide professional development opportunities to teachers of mathematics, science, and technology.
Course Requirements
Students are required to purchase and use all textbooks, handouts, and technology necessary for the two seminar courses they select. Students are expected to attend all class meetings of the two seminar courses and complete required work. In addition, each participant is expected to attend the presentations of featured speakers and participate in at least six “Conference-within-a-Conference” sessions.
Assignments
Submit a portfolio for each of the two seminar courses that demonstrate mastery of the courses’ learning objectives. Include the syllabi of the two course seminars.
Submit written summaries of the presentations of the featured speakers (one page per presentation).
Submit written summaries of the presentations for the “Conference-within-a-Conference” sessions (one page per session).
All assignments are due one week after the completion of the conference, June 27, 2008.

Percentages assigned to each component of the MA901A1 course
Portfolio for Seminar course I 40%
Portfolio for Seminar course II 40%
Written Summary of Featured speakers 8%
Written summaries of six “Conference-within-a-Conference” sessions 12%
The course instructor must receive the assignments within one week after completion of the conference, June 27, 2008. Students’ grades will be available through their Rivier College account.
