General Information

Deed of Gift signed by John and Elizabeth Phillips, 1781

Staff

  • Head of Archives and Special Collections (position open)
  • Thomas Wharton, Assistant to the Academy Archivist

Access and Use

  • Many archival and manuscript collections and most of our rare books are described in the library's online catalog. Detailed finding aids for some archival collections are available on request.
  • Please be aware that some Academy records have restricted access for legal reasons or as a matter of Academy policy.
  • Research visits are by appointment. Please contact the Head of Archives and Special Collections through our web form.
  • Researchers are asked to register by filling out a registration form and providing a valid form of positive ID.
  • Research using Archives and Special Collections material usually takes place in a secure reading room. Materials may not leave this room for any reason. Food and drink are not permitted.
  • Publication requests: We do not charge reproduction fees, but researchers seeking to publish books, articles, blog posts, etc. using material from our collections are asked to notify the Head prior to publication; this helps to insure accuracy of citations and credit lines. In some few instances, Phillips Exeter Academy holds the copyright for materials in our collections. Otherwise, it is the patron's responsibility to obtain permission from the appropriate copyright holder. The WATCH File, maintained by the University of Texas at Austin, is a valuable tool for identifying copyright holders.

Services

  • Visits by PEA classes are strongly encouraged. Please contact the Head of Archives and Special Collections to arrange a visit.
  • General questions about PEA history are welcome, provided that they are limited in scope (otherwise, we are happy to help guide you to the sources you can use to pursue the question). We can usually get back to you within 1-3 days.
  • Photocopying or scanning of materials for research use is available upon request. However, because of limited staff, we reserve the right to limit or refuse some requests. Some reproductions, such as video or audio recordings, involve additional fees.
