This course invites students to engage in the theory and practice of dance composition, with an emphasis on collaborative work inherent in a group setting. The curriculum begins with an exploration of locomotor and axial movement to form a shared kinesthetic vocabulary. Students will learn how to generate movement phrases by manipulating space, energy and time. Students will engage with source material created by iconic and contemporary choreographers through observation, critical analysis and inspiration for daily movement studies and longer projects. Students will learn the process of choreographing a dance, to express a theme through movement, both in narrative and abstract capacities. Although this course will have a Western concert dance focus, dance in all societies and cultures will be considered for choreographic inspiration.
