Biography

Mr. Benevides started playing saxophone at the age of 7 with encouragement from his musical cousins. Cutting his teeth with local Portuguese ethnic bands and community groups as a young musician, he saw a clear path to music as a life’s career. He was a Music Education major at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and later went on to earn his master’s degree in Education from Plymouth State University.

Mr. Benevides leads the PEA Jazz Combo and Jazz Ensemble. In addition, he is the director of music at Souhegan High School in Amherst, New Hampshire. His current teaching duties there include directing the jazz ensemble, concert band, pep band and music technology, as well as assisting the concert choir. At the state level, he has served on the executive board of the New Hampshire Music Educators Association as director, all-state band chair and solo ensemble chair, and on the jazz committee as the auditions host.

Mr. Benevides is also an active performing musician. As a saxophonist for Carnival Cruise Line, he has played extensively in the Caribbean. As a member of the 215th Army concert and jazz bands, he has performed in the United States, Greece, the Netherlands and Jamaica. Mr. Benevides has also performed and recorded with the Evan Goodrow Band and continues to perform regularly throughout New England.
