Biography

Though a New Hampshire resident, Mr. Schultz still considers himself a native New Yorker. He was a premed major in college until his senior year and began his musical career as a street musician in New York City. He did graduate studies in flute performance and music theory in New York and worked there as a freelance musician while teaching at the Manhattan School of Music and Lehigh University. Then, in the spring of 1989, in the same week that he received an acceptance letter from medical school, Exeter’s Music Department offered him a job.

Mr. Schultz has taught flute and all the music theory courses and has served twice as department chair. He started the school’s concert band, which has grown from five musicians to a group of 60. He also runs the chamber music program and conducts the Chamber Orchestra.

Since 1978 Mr. Schultz has taught and performed at the Kinhaven Music School in Vermont during the summer, where his students range in age from 9 to 90. His wife teaches oboe there (and at Exeter), and his son (Exeter class of ’13) is studying to become a professional bassoonist. They perform together as the Schultz Family Trio.
