Aise Pream ran for a touchdown and returned an interception for another score to lead Exeter to a 23-6 win over Worcester on Friday night.

Phelps Stadium was rocking when the clock struck triple zeros on Friday night as Big Red varsity football captured its first win of the 2019 campaign with a 23-6 victory over Worcester Academy.

Exeter wasted little time taking control of the action as Aise Pream broke free for a 35-yard gain to bring Big Red to the Worcester two-yard line just three plays into the game. Justin Jameson capped Exeter’s opening drive when he plunged into the end zone to give Exeter a 7-0 lead.

The Exeter defense continued that momentum and spoiled Worcester’s first drive of the ball game when Pream picked off a pass and returned it 35 yards into the end zone to double Big Red’s lead to 14-0 just four minutes into the game. That score would remain until the opening minutes of the third quarter when the Rams were finally able to punch in a touchdown of their own to cut the deficit to 14-6.

Exeter would battle back and make it a two-score game when kicker Christian Petry knocked in a 24-yard field goal early in the fourth before Pream would ice the game with a 28-yard touchdown scamper with just two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, giving Big Red the 23-6 win. The team was fired up after earning a hard fought W!

Big Red will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Choate at 3:00 p.m.

Big Red review

Boys varsity water polo enjoyed a 3-0 week, including a win in a five overtime thriller at Andover this past Wednesday. After trailing by four goals at the half, Exeter stormed back to even the match at 12-12 before venturing into the series of overtime periods. Milo Walshe finally ended things in favor of Big Red when the lefty tucked a shot inside the post and past the Andover goalie in the fifth extra frame – quite a way to kick off the Red and Blue rivalry this year! The squad followed up that performance on Saturday with wins over Williston Northampton and Hopkins.

Girls varsity volleyball also enjoyed a perfect 3-0 week, picking up wins over Milton, Nobles and St. Paul’s. Angelle Diamond and Annah Shaheen carried the offense for Big Red as the duo finished with 36 kills and 28 kills, respectively, over the course of the three matches.

Girls varsity soccer started off the week on the right foot as Marymegan Wright and Kate Mautz each found the back of the net to push Big Red to a 2-1 victory on the road at Brooks. Big Red followed that effort up with a 2-2 draw against a talented Brewster squad in Phelps Stadium on Saturday. Once again Wright ignited the scoring for the hosts before Alli Hanlon tapped in the game-tying goal with 15 minutes left. Big Red nearly converted a game-winner in the final moments of action, but settled for the tie. Girls JV Soccer also went unbeaten this week with a 5-0 victory at Brewster before earning a 2-2 tie of their own against Exeter High School.

After a tough 4-0 loss at Belmont Hill last Wednesday, boys varsity soccer erupted for seven goals on their way to their first win of the season, a 7-2 decision over Lawrence Academy on Sunday. Jake Gehron potted a pair of goals while Jake Shapiro, Michael Singer, Carson Garland and Reed Cash also added tallies. Big Red was also the beneficiary of an own goal by Lawrence. It was a similar week for the Boys JV squad as they started their week with a 3-1 setback at Belmont Hill before answering with a 2-1 victory at Holderness on Saturday.

Varsity field hockey netted their first win in exciting fashion on Wednesday. With the game even at 1-1, Jill Cloonan tallied her second goal of the game with just six seconds remaining to give Big Red a 2-1 victory on the road at Middlesex. The varsity team would finish the week at 1-1 after a tough Cushing team topped Exeter 4-1 on Hatch Field. The girls JV field hockey team enjoyed a perfect 2-0 week with wins over Middlesex and Exeter High School.
