Andrew Sun '20 swims away from a defender in a match earlier this season. Sun and the varsity water polo team will look to sweep the season series from Andover for the second time in the past three years.

Last month the boys varsity water polo team played, and won, the longest match in their program’s history when Milo Walshe’s ’20 shot from the left side of the cage finally gave Big Red victory in the fifth overtime period. The opponent was fitting, however, as Exeter and Andover matches often come down to the wire; the Red and the Blue have each swept a season series in the past two years. On Wednesday, the two sides will duel in the pool once again with Exeter hoping to sweep this season’s series 2-0, just maybe in a more timely fashion.

Exeter has enjoyed a terrific season, building a 10-3 overall record and are currently jockeying for position in the season ending Liquid Four Tournament on November 9. Big Red strung together eight straight wins over a four-week stretch before falling to Greenwich at the Greenwich Tournament, 15-6. Exeter bounced right back and topped Brunswick and Deerfield before losing to Loomis, 13-12, in a thriller on the road.

Exeter will wrap up their regular season on Saturday with a match against Boston Metro on Saturday before tuning up for the Liquid Four which will be hosted at Brunswick.

Big Red Review

Last week was a week filled with Ws as Exeter’s fall teams combined to go 15-2-1 across two days of competition.

Girls varsity soccer picked up a pair of key wins last week. Abby Smith ’20, Marymegan Wright ’20, and Cecilia Treadwell ’22 each scored in a 3-0 shutout over Groton while Kaylee Bennett’s second half strike lifted Big Red past a talented St. Paul’s squad on Saturday. The girls JV team suffered their first loss of the season, 2-1, to St. Paul’s on Saturday.

On the boys side, the varsity had their offense in high gear as they outscored their opponents 9-0 in wins over Berwick and St. Paul’s while the JV side scored a 7-0 victory on the road at Tilton before earning a 1-1 draw against St. Paul’s.

Girls varsity field hockey scored early and often on their way to a 5-1 victory over Kimball Union on Wednesday before Molly Longfield ’22 scored the lone goal in Exeter’s victory over St. Paul’s on Saturday. Girls JV Field hockey was also a perfect 2-0 on the week with wins over Shore Country Day and St. Paul’s.

While the varsity football enjoyed a bye week, the JV squad earned their first win of the season on the road at St. Paul’s on Wednesday. Jackson Giampa ’23 was able to scamper into the end zone late in the fourth quarter in what was the only score of the game in Big Red’s 6-0 triumph.

The girls and boys cross country teams each stayed undefeated in dual meets on the season, as each varsity and JV program each raced to victory over St. Paul’s.

Girls varsity volleyball improved to a perfect 13-0 with a 3-0 sweep over St. Paul’s on Saturday. Annah Shaheen ‘20 paced Big Red with eight kills while Angelle Diamond ’20 and Dylan O’Day ’21 each added six for the hosts. Girls JV also earned a 3-1 over St. Paul’s to improve to 5-3 on the season.

Alumni in the news

Big Red basketball legend Duncan Robinson ’13 is making a name for himself in the NBA with the Miami Heat. The second-year pro is lighting up South Beach, averaging 11 points per game through the early-goings of the season, including scoring a career-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Robinson, who helped Exeter to a 28-1 record and the first Class A title in program history in 2013, has helped the Heat to a 2-1 record to open the season.

Coach Spo has made it clear - Duncan Robinson is one of the best shooters on the planet. ☔️
