For the fourth time in as many years, the Exeter boys volleyball team is the New England Champion! Big Red defeated Choate 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-12) in the semifinals before downing Andover 3-1 (17-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-15) in the championship match to claim their fourth straight title.

“This was a tough year for us with injuries to three starters,” said head coach Bruce Shang. “Luckily we had some great depth where other players could step in and keep us very competitive.

“Jack Zhang ‘20 and Zach Stenglein ’18 both stepped in as starters, Colt Delaney ’20 started as a brand-new player to volleyball. As a prep, James Keeling ‘21 stepped in to play in both the semifinals and finals without playing in a varsity match. Sam Michaels ‘19 was our rock; he made us win all year. Don Assamongkol ‘19 and Greg Scronce ’20 stepped up as dominant outsides and our ball control was great because we had senior captains Emilio Karakey ‘18 and Noah Asch ‘18 passing well and digging everything.”

After making quick work of Choate in the semifinals, Exeter was challenged by Andover in the championship match. The Blue claimed a 1-0 lead with a 25-17 victory in the opening set before Big Red mounted a big comeback in the second set to even the match at 1-1. The 27-25 second set victory put the momentum in Exeter’s hands and they rolled to third and fourth set victories.

Toni Rocak ’18 led the Big Red offense with 19 kills in the title bout while Kerick Walker ’20 added 11 from the front row. Assamongkol added nine kills for Big Red while Sam Michaels served up 40 assists.

Big Red will battle with Andover once again at E/A Weekend on Saturday, May 26.
