Senior co-captain Jake Gehron has scored in six out of Exeter's seven matches this season.

Exeter co-captain Jake Gehron and junior Jack Burgess have put boys varsity soccer back on the winning track. After a tough start to the season – going up against three of New England’s toughest teams – Gehron and Burgess have helped Exeter claim three straight wins, with an explosive offense that has scored 14 goals during that stretch.

After a 0-3 start to the season, Big Red saw their offensive flood gates open in a 7-2 victory of Lawrence Academy before posting a 4-3 victory over High Mowing and a 3-1 win on the road at Choate this past week. Gehron and Burgess have been at the center of the attack, accounting for eight of the fourteen goals during the win streak.

Gehron, who has scored in five of the six matches this season, has a team-high six goals on the season including two-goal efforts against Lawrence and this past Saturday at Choate. Burgess, who netted his first two-goal game in the victory over High Mowing last Wednesday, also got the scoring started for Big Red in Saturday’s 3-1 at Choate.

Gehron and Burgess will look to keep their scoring touch this week with matches at Brewster Academy and home against New Hampton.

Big Red review

Both the boys and girls cross country teams enjoyed a successful trip to the Coe Brown Black Bear Invite on Saturday. Will Coogan paced the boys side with a first-place overall finish in the 5k race with a time of 16:17 to help push Big Red to a second-place team finish. Gia Pisano was the first harrier to cross for Big Red on the girls side, coming across the finish at 20:34 for a 12th-place overall finish. The girls varsity team placed fourth overall.

Boys varsity water polo ran their winning streak to seven matches last week, with a 15-2 victory at St. John’s Prep and a 20-11 win at Choate. Big Red has outscored their opponents by a 53-21 margin over the last four games.

Two goals by Cecilia Treadwell helped aid girls varsity soccer in a 5-0 victory over Holderness on Wednesday, but Big Red was be tripped up by BB&N on Saturday by a score of 4-0.

Varsity and JV field hockey each fell on the road at Deerfield on Saturday, but will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday when they are home against Brewster.

Girls varsity volleyball improved to a perfect 6-0 following a 3-0 victory in their lone matchup of the week at Choate this past Saturday. Seniors Angelle Diamond, Mia Glinn, and Annah Shaheen powered the Big Red attack with a combined 18 kills, sweeping the Wild Boars with set scores of 25-23, 25-10, 25-16. The girls JV squad fell to Choate 3-1 in their season-opening match.

Varsity football nearly pulled off an upset on the road at Choate. Trailing 7-0 in the middle of the third quarter, Aise Pream took a handoff up the middle and into the end zone from 16 yards out to even the score at 7-7. The two offense would go into a stalemate until Choate was able to punch in their second score of the day with just 2:30 left on the clock. Big Red had one final chance, but a deep pass down the sideline on fourth down was ruled out of bounds, turning the ball over the Choate and suffering the 14-7 loss.
