The Lamont Gallery presents ”Public/Private: The Arc of Longing,” which explores the intersection between the public and the private. Here, artists will illustrate how these two parts of our selves overlap in unexpected ways.

Artist Becky Barsi, chair of the Creative Arts Department at the Derryfield School in Manchester, New Hampshire, highlights the emotional intimacy and frailty of the figure in her gravity series of photographic portraits. Amy Larimer, assistant director of the Stanford Architectural Design Program and Phillips Exeter Academy summer school faculty member, honors personal and communal suffering through a large-scale sculptural memorial. Larimer was the recipient of the international ArtPrize competition. Michigan-based Madison May’s charged yet ambiguous mixed-media work delves into memory and personal trauma. May recently received the Jurors Pick Award for Michigan Emerging Graduate Artists Juried Exhibition.

Rachel Petruccillo, Pervenche Periwinkle - Meter Maid, Saint Germain, Paris. Rachel Petruccillo’s graphic portraits are both curious and humorous, and examine the assumptions we make about others. Petruccillo, based in New York, was trained at Montserrat College in Beverly, MA. Painter Miranda Updike, daughter of writer John Updike, creates colorful paintings that capture the movement patterns of crowds. Leah Woods’ carved and bent wood sculptures celebrate form and texture. Woods is a professor of woodworking at the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester. Additional pieces of the artists’ work will be on view at the Class of 1945 Library.

According to Lauren O’Neal, Lamont Gallery director and curator, ”The works featured in ”Public/Private” invite us to engage in close, attentive looking, both as a private act of contemplation, and through the shared experience of a communal event.”
